Center for Biological Diversity: Help Save Ocean Fisheries That Are Under Attack
At a time when fisheries are suffering, and environmental review and public feedback on fisheries management are crucial, the Bush administration is proposing to make an end run around both — which could have catastrophic effects on management of crucial resources such as sea turtles, corals, and valuable fish populations.

DawnWatch: Animal advocate profiles, LA Times front page and sports! 7/22/08
The Los Angeles Times has had two gorgeous profiles on animal advocates in the last few days. The Saturday, July 19 edition had a front page story about Wayne Pacelle, head of the Humane Society of the United States. And today’s Tuesday July 22 edition has a lovely piece in the Sports section, about Johanna McCloy’s “Soy Happy” efforts to get veggie dogs into all the baseball stadiums.

DawnWatch: Mustang killing debate on NY Times front page 7/20/08
The front page of the Sunday, July 20, New York Times includes an article, by Felicity Barringer, headed, “Mustangs Stir a Debate on Thinning the Herd.” Unfortunately the article begins with a focus on arguments from some environmentalists in favor of removing mustangs from federal land. [Note: Thanking the Monkey’s Chapter Seven, “The Greenies” makes clear that we cannot assume that all environmental groups are animal advocates.]

Earthjustice: Tell Congress to Oppose Offshore Drilling
There’s a lot of speculation these days over who is to blame for our rising gas prices. But one thing is for certain: drilling for oil off our coasts won’t get us out of this predicament. Yet the threat of offshore drilling — and its disastrous environmental effects — could become a reality if Congress votes to lift a longstanding ban on new offshore drilling in the coming weeks. We need your help to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Environmental Defense: No to Offshore Drilling, Yes to Energy Innovation
Tell your members of Congress that you oppose lifting the ban on offshore drilling and that you support energy innovation to get us off oil.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Contact Dallas Mayor and City Council and Demand A Public Hearing For Jenny
The Dallas Zoo intends to send Jenny, a 32-year-old African elephant who requires special handling and care, to Africam Safari, a drive-through tourist attraction in Mexico. Jenny is a high-risk elephant with a serious history of aberrant behaviors at the zoo, including self-mutilation and aggression. Jenny’s problems were sparked by some of the very same conditions she will be exposed to at Africam, including loud noises and vehicles.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Help Ban the Use of Electric Prods at Rodeos; And to require immediate, on-site euthanasia for fatally-injured animals
The animals at Hayward’s Rowell Ranch Rodeo Park, and CALEXPO & California State Fair in Sacramento need your help! In 1986, a policy was approved banning the use of electric prods on the animals at the Rowell Ranch Rodeo Park. This came about in the wake of a series of injuries and deaths at the Ranch, and great public outcry. This year, an employee of Cotton Rosser’s Flying U Rodeo Co. was videotaped by members of SHARK illegally using an electric prod on horses.

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Speak out to end the civil use of highly enriched uranium
Highly enriched uranium, a key component for building nuclear weapons, is vulnerable to theft and its continued civil use endangers public safety. Tell the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to end the civil use of highly enriched uranium before the August 11th comment deadline.

Ocean Conservancy: Help Protect Hawaiian Marine Monument
We need your help to ensure that the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are protected for generations to come. The Co-Trustees of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument released a Draft Monument Management Plan that describes how they will manage everything in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands from the recovery of the critically endangered monk seals to visitors on Midway Atoll. Their plan offers a good roadmap, but it needs significant improvements.

Public Citizen: Demand a Strong Consumer Bill Today
Defective and dangerous products – from lead-painted toys to vaccum cleaners that catch fire – are still being allowed onto store shelves and into our homes. We’ve been working for months to put an end to this. We helped push the Senate to pass strong reforms for the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the House also passed a version of the bill.

United Poultry Concerns (UPC): Two More Letters in Canandaigua DAILY MESSENGER Oppose Classroom Chicken Slaughter Project in High School Ecology Course
The following two letters appeared on Sunday, July 20, 2008. A comment opportunity follows each letter to the editor.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF): Push for a Real Solution to High Gas Prices
U.S. activists: Tell your members of Congress to reject oil drilling along our nation’s coasts and to push for a real solution to high gas prices — one that is sustainable and doesn’t threaten our environmental heritage.
