Corporate Accountability International: Is Dasani the Real Thing?
This spring the new Aquafina labels spelling out “public water source” hit shelves. Thanks to your phone calls and letters, Pepsi agreed to this change one year ago this week. Rather than follow Pepsi’s lead, Coke denies that people want easy access to this information. Call Coke and tell them it’s time to come clean. Let them know that you want to know the truth behind its marketing.
Ecological Internet / Forests.org: Clayoquot Sound, Canada’s Ancient Temperate Rainforest Valleys to Again Fall to Logging
These ancient forests must be fully protected and all industrial development ended to preserve biodiversity and ecosystem health, focusing upon employment from standing trees and fully intact ecosystems, and failure to do will lead to a renewed “War of the Woods” and global anti-B.C. markets campaign.
Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF): Track Animal Cruelty at the Department of Justice
The Animal Cruelty Statistics Act of 2008 (H.R. 6597), introduced by House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.), with Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-CA), requires the collection of data on all animal cruelty crimes.
Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF): Help End Horse Slaughter
Even though all three foreign-owned slaughter plants in the U.S. have closed, our horses are still being subjected to intense suffering and abuse through transport and slaughter across our borders. Similar to the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 311), a new bill introduced by House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI), with Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN), would put a stop to this brutal practice. Recognizing the cruelty of this industry, the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2008 (H.R.6598) would both end the slaughter of American horses for human consumption and prevent their export for slaughter in other countries.
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Tell your senators to vote Yes for clean, renewable energy
The Senate will vote soon on a critical bill that would reduce high energy bills, fight global warming pollution and create high-tech jobs by extending federal tax incentives for clean and renewable energy sources. Tell your senators to vote Yes for clean, renewable energy today.
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Urge your senators to clean up our beaches
Congress has the opportunity to help clean up contaminated beaches and to make sure sources of beach pollution are identified and addressed. Urge your senators to pass the Beach Protection Act.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urgent: Urge Logan County, Kansas, Officials to Halt Reported Prairie Dog Massacre!
PETA has received phone calls from frantic residents of Logan County, Kansas, who are horrified by the news that county officials are setting out poisoned bait in order to kill prairie dogs on a 10,000-acre privately owned ranch in Winona, Kansas, despite prolonged efforts over the past several years by residents to protect these animals.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): U.S. Military Shooting and Burning Live Monkeys, Goats, and Pigs in Trauma Training
The Department of Defense is shooting and burning monkeys, pigs, and goats in combat training exercises for servicemen and servicewomen—even though more effective non-animal simulators are readily available. Leading medical experts agree that these simulators offer superior training. In addition to being cruel, this outmoded practice is a disservice to the men and women who risk their lives in defense of our country and who deserve the most effective trauma training methods available.
The Sierra Club: Support the Clean Energy Economy
The clock is ticking to extend critical tax incentives for clean energy technologies like wind and solar power that expire at the end of this year. Before the Senate leaves for a month-long recess this week they will have perhaps their last, best chance to extend incentives for renewable energy and energy efficiency.
The Sierra Club: Help Stop Oil and Gas Drilling in Roan Plateau
When the Bureau of Land Management began the planning process for Roan Plateau, it pledged that it would craft a “community-supported” plan. Unfortunately, it has failed to do so. Discarding input from field staff, the public, local officials and Governor Bill Ritter, the BLM has failed to consider alternatives that would protect the Roan’s wilderness quality lands and important backcountry recreation opportunities. The BLM has also failed to consider the potential impacts of oil and gas leasing on the area’s air quality, sensitive species, and wildlife. Even the premise for the lease sale is in question, as the BLM has misinterpreted the legislation transferring Roan Plateau to its management, incorrectly asserting that all lands there must be leased for oil and gas drilling.
Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS): Put Our Health Before Industry Profits!
In CAFOs (confined animal feeding operations), antibiotics are widely used without prescription in the feed and water of animals that are not sick. Bacteria that are constantly exposed to antibiotics develop resistance to these drugs. When humans get sick from resistant bacteria, the antibiotics prescribed will no longer work. Today, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is virtually ignoring this problem. The Senate is set to renew an FDA program that funds the review of applications for new animal drugs. The Union of Concerned Scientists is calling on the Senate to attach landmark legislation to this bill that could finally limit antibiotic overuse in CAFOs and preserve these precious drugs for future generations.
The Wilderness Society: Drilling in Sensitive Areas
This week is a pivotal one in Congress for the future of the nation’s sensitive lands and coastal waters. Tell your elected representatives to stand firm when they are asked to turn over special areas to the oil industry.
