In mid-August, the Gulf Council will meet in Key Largo, Florida where they will vote on proposed rules to end overfishing of gag grouper, sometimes sold as black grouper. In order to succeed, the Gulf Council – now more than ever – needs to put fishery politics aside and follow the science. Your help is urgently needed to make this exciting opportunity a reality.

The Sierra Club: Protect Appalachia’s Mountains and Streams from Destruction
Mountaintop removal mining is exactly that, instead of digging tunnels to mine for coal, the tops of whole mountains are blown off with explosives to expose the seams of coal hidden underneath. Beautiful mountain ranges are reduced to leveled worksites while the dirt, rock, trees and other debris are bulldozed into the surrounding valleys, blocking and contaminating local rivers and streams, flooding and polluting the water in local communities, and threatening countless animals and plants. This practice was banned for over a quarter of a century until President Bush legalized mountaintop removal mining again in 2002.

Farm Sanctuary Scores Landmark Legal Victory for Farm Animals
Yesterday, Farm Sanctuary scored a precedent-setting victory in its decade-long battle against the New Jersey Department of Agriculture’s (NJDA) inhumane standards of farm animal care. In a monumental legal decision, the New Jersey Supreme Court unanimously declared that factory farming practices cannot be considered “humane” simply because they are “routine husbandry practices.” The Court also rejected the practice of tail-docking cattle, the manner in which the NJDA had provided for farm animals to be mutilated without anesthesia, and ordered the agency to readdress many of the state-mandated standards for the treatment of farm animals.
