American Rights at Work: Tell the FEC to investigate Wal-Mart
According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, Wal-Mart has been threatening employees that if they vote for pro-worker candidates like Barack Obama in November, the Employee Free Choice Act will pass, making it easier to form unions in Wal-Mart stores. Telling employees how to vote in a U.S. election is not only morally reprehensible, it’s potentially illegal.
American Rivers: RiverAlert: The Endangered Pearl River Needs Your Help
The Pearl River is a recreation oasis for nearby communities, an important source of drinking water, and an essential refuge for fish and wildlife. But developers want to dam and dredge the river to create artificial lakes and islands for private development at a staggering cost to taxpayers. This boondoggle would destroy vital floodplain wetlands, cause irreparable harm to the Pearl River, and actually place people in the path of potential floods. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and local governments need to reject this proposal for private profit at taxpayer expense and instead champion a comprehensive plan to protect and restore the Pearl River and its natural flood protection attributes.
American Rivers: RiverAlert: The Endangered Niobrara River Needs Your Help
The Niobrara River is one of only two Wild and Scenic Rivers in Nebraska and is a regional and national treasure or its fish and wildlife, recreation opportunities, and tourism. But excessive irrigation diversions, largely a result of rising corn prices for ethanol production, are shrinking its flows and threatening these values. Water managers must act to prevent excessive withdrawals to protect the river’s health and the many quality of life benefits it provides to human and natural communities.
American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA): New Anti-Horse Slaughter Bill Introduced in House
Unfortunately, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503), the anti-slaughter bill we have advocated for in the past, has stalled in Congress due to political maneuvering. Similar to H.R. 503, the newly introduced Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act (H.R. 6598) would prohibit the possession, shipment, transport, purchase, sale, delivery or receipt via interstate commerce of any horse intended for slaughter for human consumption. Unlike the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, this bill has the potential to move quickly in the House of Representatives.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): El Paso County Officials Plan to Use Cruel Traps to Capture Dogs
Officials in El Paso County, Colorado, have allocated thousands of taxpayer dollars to fund a heartless arrangement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in a misguided effort to rid the community of homeless and roaming dogs. The county plans to have the USDA set leghold and snare traps—torturous devices that maim and kill animals—in various locations throughout the community.
National Horse Protection Action Fund: Pass the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act
There is exciting news for horses and the people who love them! House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) and Congressman Dan Burton (R-IN) have sponsored new legislation to put an end to the slaughter of American horses. The Conyers-Burton “Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act”, H.R. 6598, would prohibit the purchase, sale, transport or delivery of horses intended for human consumption. The bill addresses the cruelty of horse slaughter, something that even defenders of slaughter admit exists. Because the horses’ final destination is slaughter, they are neglected and abused when they are collected, during transport, and in the slaughterhouse.
National Wildlife Federation: “Chill the Drills!” — Send a Message and Pass it On
For the past few weeks, Big Oil has been in a public relations frenzy, trying to convince Americans that drilling in our nation’s most pristine and protected areas will somehow reduce rising family fuel costs. But the fact is–as even Bush’s own Energy Department admits–drilling here and drilling now will not save us any money today, tomorrow or in the near future. Make sure your Members of Congress and your friends know the real dirt on drilling: It offers NO real solution to America’s energy crisis.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Tell Citigroup to Drop Cruel Elephant Ad
After PETA learned about the Citigroup commercial “Safari,” which features a trained elephant, we immediately contacted the company to request that it pull the commercial and pledge never to use exotic animals in advertisements again. After months of negotiations, Citigroup has denied both requests.
Public Citizen: Help Protect Government Whistleblowers
When scientific research is altered or suppressed, government contractors waste millions of taxpayer dollars, or national security documents are falsified, witnesses need to know that they can blow the whistle without reprisals endangering their careers and their lives.
Save the Internet: Take Action: Save the Internet
The Federal Communications Commission has voted to punish Comcast for violating Net Neutrality and blocking your right to do what you want on the Internet. This precedent-setting victory sends a powerful message to phone and cable companies that blocking access to the Internet will not be tolerated from this time forward. With your help today, by signing this letter and forwarding it to friends, we can push our ranks to more than 2 million and stop Internet blocking and censorship once and for all.

Wal-Mart Watch: Tell Wal-Mart to Stop Intimidating its Workers
Wal-Mart is holding mandatory meetings with supervisors and managers to warn them that if Senator Obama wins the presidential election, Democrats will pass the Employee Free Choice Act to unionize their stores. Why is Wal-Mart so worried? Because workers who have the power to stand up to their employers have higher wages, better health care, and fairer work places.
