American Rivers: RiverAlert: The Endangered Minnesota River Needs Your Help
The Minnesota River is treasured by thousands of residents and visitors who swim, boat, fish and hunt in and along the river. But a proposed coal-fired power plant threatens the health of the river and nearby communities. In addition to spewing greenhouse gases and other toxins, cooling and scrubbing mechanisms within the plant would require billions of gallons of water every year.
American Rivers: RiverAlert: The Endangered Cache la Poudre River Needs Your Help
Colorado’s only Wild and Scenic River, the Cache la Poudre River, or “Poudre,” is the lifeblood of the cities and farms it serves. But its future is threatened by a water diversion scheme that would stretch the river beyond its limits in order to quench future development elsewhere. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) must deny this flawed proposal, and ask involved Colorado cities and water districts to implement simple water conservation and efficiency measures instead. If they do not, communities, agricultural operations, and other businesses may no longer be able to enjoy the myriad benefits the Poudre River now offers.
Audubon: Save Seabirds from Bad Fishing Practices
Our oceans—and many of the seabirds that depend on them—are in trouble. Fisheries are being overfished to the point of collapse, and seabirds like albatross and petrels are being killed in the tens of thousands through unsound fishing practices. The tiny Red Knot is on the brink of extinction because of overfishing in the Delaware Bay.
Consumers Union: Thank You – And Thank Them!
You did it! Congress overwhelmingly passed the product safety bill last week, and President Bush said he will sign the bill into law. Your hard work will turn 2007’s “Year of the Recall” into 2008’s Year of the Consumer Victory. Take a moment below to send an email to your lawmakers thanking them for supporting the bill. A pat on the back will let them know you appreciate them putting consumers first, not industry.
Greenpeace: Leave an Impression: A Week of Global Warming Action
Activists like you from around the country will visit their Representative’s local offices to deliver a personal message about global warming. You’ll choose a picture of something dear to you that’s being threatened by global warming, and write a personal message on the back of the picture. It could be a picture of your family, your home, or your favorite vacation destination — whatever you choose. Deliver your picture and message with flowers, and you’ll really get your Representative’s attention. That’s it. A simple message with a simple reminder.
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Urge the Bush administration not to weaken protections for our oceans and marine life
Even though our oceans and marine habitats are threatened by overfishing and other harms, the Bush administration has proposed regulations that would make the situation worse, not better. Send a comment right away telling the administration not to short-change our oceans and marine life.
Ocean Conservancy: Tell Federal Fisheries Managers to Look Before they Leap
“Look before you leap.” Wise advice to heed before making a major decision. Especially about our planet’s life support system and one of our most important sources of food. The National Environmental Policy Act – or “NEPA” – requires fishery managers to do just that – take a hard look at how fishing decisions affect our ocean, not just our fisheries. Your voice is needed to help protect these resources!
People for the American Way (PFAW): Tell Obama: Pick a Progressive!
There are lots of rumors swirling around in political circles and online about potential running mate picks for Barack Obama. He will probably announce his pick any day now, and as progressives, we need to make our voices heard and let him know that he should pick someone who shares our values. Sign our petition to Barack Obama right now urging him to pick a progressive as his candidate for vice president! (Bonus: pencil in Dennis Kucinich!)
PETA2: Tell Selfridges to Stop Selling Foie Gras
What comes to mind when you think about Selfridges? Expensive clothes? Designer bags? How about the diseased livers of force-fed ducks and geese? Now, I’ll grant that the last one might seem a little crazy, but that is exactly what Selfridges is selling.
Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM): Ask Senators McCain & Obama Where They Stand On Animal Testing
Join PCRM supporters in signing a petition that asks Sens. John McCain and Barrack Obama to tell us where they stand on an issue that is very important—the fact that the Food and Drug Administration does not mandate the use of proven alternatives to animal testing by companies applying for approval for their products. We ask that you sign our petition and urge your friends and family to sign, too. Help us motivate both candidates to address this issue on a national level.
Public Citizen: Tell Congress to Stop Spending Billions of Taxpayer Dollars to Subsidize Obscenely Profitable Oil Companies.
Today, oil is worth more than two times as much as it was then, making the argument against subsidizing oil exploration even stronger. Tell your Senators to stop subsidizing big oil with taxpayer dollars; the money could be better spent on investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency needed to combat climate change.
The Sierra Club: Thank Governor Ritter for Supporting Roan Plateau Protections
Several weeks ago you sent a message to Governor Ritter asking him to support protections for the wildlife of Colorado’s Roan Plateau — THANK YOU for sending that message! I am very pleased to report in response to your message, and thousands from other Coloradans as well, Governor Ritter has formerly filed a protest this past week against the federal Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) plan to permit full and complete drilling of the incredible Roan Plateau.
Campaign Updates
Environmental Defense: Conserved Lands Will Remain Safe
Last month, you joined with nearly 20,000 other Environmental Defense Fund activists to help protect one of America’s oldest and most successful conservation policies, the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). The U.S. Department of Agriculture had been considering a plan to release 24 million acres of CRP land for commercial use. Last week, our combined efforts to protect this conservation program paid off when USDA Secretary Ed Schafer decided against opening up the CRP lands.
Farm Sanctuary: Cruel Pig Lab Canceled
Thanks to your calls and e-mails, the Society of Gynecological Oncologists has informed Farm Sanctuary that they have canceled the “Pig Lab” that was scheduled to take place in conjunction with this week’s surgical meeting.
