American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): Tell Congress: Rein in DHS Travel Abuses
Planning a vacation? Thinking about traveling outside the country? If you travel outside the United States, you can kiss your right to privacy, and perhaps your laptop, digital camera and cell phone, goodbye. With no suspicion and no explanation, the U.S. government can seize your laptop, cell phone, or PDA as you enter the United States and download all your private information — including your personal and business documents, emails, phone calls, and web history.
American Freedom Campaign: Tell President Bush that he must allow executive branch officials to testify or he will face impeachment
On September 26, congressional oversight may be dead. The Constitution that has served our nation so well since 1789 may be hopelessly and forever diminished. Our federal government and, in turn, our nation may never be the same. It is time to put an end to this defiling of our Constitution. The U.S. House of Representatives has set September 26 as a target date for adjournment. By that time, Karl Rove, Harriet Miers, and Josh Bolten must comply with the congressional subpoenas they have been issued – and which a federal judge has ordered them to follow.
American Rivers: River Alert: The Endangered Catawba-Wateree River Needs Your Help
The Catawba-Wateree River has served communities in the Southeast for thousands of years. This regional treasure was home to some of the first Native American tribes encountered by Europeans in the United States. The river now provides drinking water to millions, supports a myriad of local industries, and sustains the high quality of life residents enjoy. However, under this rich exterior, the Catawba-Wateree River is being drained away by water mismanagement and explosive population growth. These threats, combined with predictions of more frequent droughts due to global warming, impair the river’s health and its ability to provide for residents in the future is at risk.
American Rivers: RiverAlert: The Endangered Rogue River Needs Your Help
The Rogue River is one of the most renowned rivers in the country, famous for its exceptional scenery, biodiversity, world-class fishing, and thrilling whitewater boating. One of the eight original rivers protected in the national Wild and Scenic Rivers System in 1968, the Rogue supports a thriving recreation economy and draws thousands of anglers, boaters and hikers each year. But proposals to clearcut oldgrowth forest along key streams that feed the Rogue threaten to choke the river with sediment and destroy the river’s wild character. Unless Congress kills these destructive logging plans and permanently protects Rogue River tributaries, the amazing and unique wonders of the wild Rogue will be lost to future generations.
Environmental Defense Fund: Take Action to Protect Ocelot Habitat
Fewer than 100 endangered ocelots still roam the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Now the Department of Homeland Security wants to build a 700-mile fence on the U.S.-Mexico border that would cut through much of the ocelot’s remaining habitat and prevent the little cats from swimming across the Rio Grande to mate.
Oceana: Take Action: Protect your right to have a voice when it comes to our oceans!
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is the nation’s fundamental charter for environmental protection. It allows the public to comment and provide feedback on government actions. A newly proposed rule from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) creates a whole new NEPA process and makes it more difficult to keep the fisheries managers accountability to the public. We need your help to change this rule, so take action to make sure your voice can continue to be heard on ocean conservation and fishery management decisions.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): URGENT: Beaten Dog Left in Custody of His Alleged Abuser!
According to news sources, Greenland, New Hampshire, resident Carol Pugh faces felony cruelty-to-animals charges after witnesses reported that Pugh repeatedly struck her Burmese mountain dog in the face and kicked the animal in the ribs as the dog cowered and cried out. Witnesses reportedly told police that Pugh was angry with the dog because he “ran off” for an hour. Shockingly, Pugh’s latest reported victim remains in her custody.
True Majority: Obama’s right: We can save gas NOW
Senator Obama just did something we don’t often see from politicians: he used common sense. A few days ago the Senator recommended that we should all inflate our car tires to the proper pressure to reduce our energy consumption. Rather than join the call for this sensible step, the Republicans decided to launch a campaign to mock an idea which has support from everyone from AAA and NASCAR to President Bush’s own Department of Energy. Now, Senator Obama has responded to this attack and called out the right wing for their ‘pride in being ignorant’. They may be trying to score political points off this issue, but the truth is, if everyone inflated their tires to the right pressure we’d save 3-4% of our oil consumption - right now.

Miscellaneous
Farm Sanctuary: It started with a broken, bloody horn on a cow…
Owner charged with 4 counts of animal cruelty…14 sick and injured farm animals rushed to Farm Sanctuary and need your help! It was a broken, bloody horn on a cow at a Watsonville, California slaughterhouse that caught the attention of Santa Cruz Animal Services supervising field manager, Todd Stosuy, as he was passing by. Within moments of stepping onto the slaughterhouse feedlot, he knew that the cow’s suffering was only the beginning of the horrors he would find there. Stosuy called us for help, and 13 goats and a cow were rushed to safety at Farm Sanctuary. Emaciated, terrified, sick with lung infections, and pained by overgrown, rotted hooves, the animals need intensive care to survive.
