Action Alerts

American Rights at Work: Take Action: Tell the FEC to investigate Wal-Mart
According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, Wal-Mart has been threatening employees that if they vote for pro-worker candidates like Barack Obama in November, the Employee Free Choice Act will pass, making it easier to form unions in Wal-Mart stores. Telling employees how to vote in a U.S. election is not only morally reprehensible, it’s potentially illegal. We’re delivering our petition to the Federal Election Commission on Thursday. Sign to join us in asking for an investigation into Wal-Mart’s potential electioneering.

Animal Welfare Institute (AWI): eAlert: Please Contact Your Legislators This Month to Enlist Their Support for Animal Welfare Bills!
Because Members of Congress are in their home districts until after Labor Day, this is the perfect time for you to lobby them directly on behalf of the animals! Visiting with your Senators and Representative as a constituent in their home offices can have a significant impact. If you are able, please call their local headquarters today to set up a time to meet in person, asking them to support the following important pieces of animal protective legislation.

CREDO Action: Tell McCain: No Offshore Drilling
Senator McCain was against oil drilling before he was running for President, but times have changed. Now, McCain has the gall to run political spots featuring himself as an advocate for renewable energy. The oil executives might be buying these lines, but we aren’t. This rhetoric is dangerous, and the American people deserve better.

DawnWatch: NBC4 covers animal sanctuary and Thanking the Monkey 8/12/08
Yesterday, Tuesday August 12, the Going Green segment on Washington DC’s NBC affiliate covered my visit to Poplar Springs animal sanctuary, which was a precursor to the Thanking the Monkey event there this coming Monday evening.

Environmental Defense Fund: Take Action to Protect America’s Endangered Species
Your landmark Endangered Species Act is under attack. The Bush administration is proposing new rules that would weaken species protections and eliminate independent scientific review of development projects that could threaten species habit. We need your help to fight back.

Greenpeace: Take Action! Say NO to Offshore Oil Drilling
With record high gas prices in the news, some politicians and Big Oil companies are taking advantage of the situation to push for offshore oil drilling. But the truth is, offshore drilling won’t help prices at the pump, while it could cause oil spills and threaten marine life like whales and dolphins — not to mention it will definitely contribute to global warming.

National Wildlife Federation (NWF): Stop the Stealth Attack against the Endangered Species Act - Take Action and Pass it on!
A leaked document obtained by the National Wildlife Federation has revealed that the Bush administration is planning on weakening the Endangered Species Act in its last few months in office.

Rainforest Action Network (RAN): Tell more than 350 companies: It’s time to stop destroying rainforests for palm oil!
Now you can help make sure that the companies that use palm oil in food and household products get the message: It’s time to stop destroying rainforests for palm oil. The goal: 1 million letters to these companies today!

Sierra Club: Support the Big Thicket Expansion
Thanks to a new bill introduced in Congress, kids could soon be taking canopy walks, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, and enjoying more of the great outdoors. The Big Thicket expansion bill adds 100,000 acres to the Big Thicket National Preserve in East Texas and provides for the construction and operation of numerous educational facilities to teach children and young adults about wildlife, the environment and the importance of protecting it.

Sierra Club: Dear Nancy Pelosi…
While others are giving way, Nancy Pelosi is standing up to Big Oil. She understands that we can’t drill our way out of this problem and is pushing for real energy solutions that benefit the American people, not Big Oil companies. Please take a minute to thank her for standing strong and voice your support for stronger fuel economy standards and real investments in energy efficiency and clean, renewable energy.
[Kelly’s Note: Grist points out that, during her Monday appearance on Larry King Live, Pelosi expressed an openness to offshore drilling as a compromise for a comprehensive energy package. Should you choose to sign this petition, perhaps qualify your support with a plea to rethink any such compromises with Republicans and Big Oil.]

PETA2: Your Yearbook Photo Can Help Animals
If you’re anything like me and the majority of people I grew up with, you’ve obsessed about what to wear on yearbook picture day. It’s the photo that will live on in the pages of your yearbook forever. So why not incorporate animal rights into that picture? Think about it: Your message that animals should be treated better will be there for people to see over and over. What could be better than that?
