easyVegan Link Sanctuary, 2008-08-29 (superdupermegalinx edition!)
August 29th, 2008 4:40 pm by Kelly GarbatoI’ve been on a well-deserved blogging break for the past week or so, hence the total lack of posts. Instead of posting a few medium-sized link roundups, I decided to compile one huge link sanctuary. I know it’s a lot to take in, but please take a moment to go through the links and take action as needed. Everything is new (I think) since I last posted on 8/20.
Thanks!
Action Alerts
Alaska Wilderness League: Contact Congress today to oppose drilling in the Arctic Refuge!
Big Oil wants to open the Arctic Refuge for business. They continue to preach the laws of corporate supply and demand: The corporations hoard the supply and continue to make demands. They line their pockets at the expense of the American people and the heritage of our public lands. As the rhetoric rages on, it is up to concerned citizens to keep Big Oil’s drill bits out of America’s Arctic. Congress reconvenes shortly, and Big Oil will undoubtedly mount their strongest push yet for the permanent destruction of our special places across the country.
Alaska Wilderness League: Save our seas: Drilling won’t mean a drop at the pump!
In its effort to expand offshore development around the country, including Alaska, and put pressure on Congress to lift a 26-year-old moratorium on leasing off the US Pacific and Atlantic coasts, the Bush administration has prematurely launched the development of another offshore leasing plan – and is currently taking comments from oil companies, state governments and the public on the new plan.
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): Tell Congress to Rein in DHS Travel Abuses
Traveling shouldn’t mean checking your rights when you’re checking your luggage. Tell Congress: it’s time to rein in travel abuses by the Department of Homeland Security.
Amnesty International: Uphold Human Rights in the Gulf Coast
Survivors should be able to genuinely and effectively participate in their return, resettlement and reintegration into their communities. The U.S. government must ensure that the principles of equality and non-discrimination are applied to the return or resettlement of all internally displaced persons.
Audubon: Endangered Species Act Under Attack
In its final few months, the Bush Administration is attempting to gut the Endangered Species Act. This time, it’s a proposal to allow federal agencies to decide unilaterally that a proposed project is not likely to adversely affect listed species — no consultation with wildlife experts required.
Born Free USA / Animal Protection Institute (API): Please Take Additional Action To Save Jenny the Elephant
Despite the Dallas Zoo’s recent announcement that Jenny the elephant would not be traveling to Mexico after all, her fate still hangs in a precarious balance. Your participation is urgently needed to help ensure that her best interests are considered by Dallas decision-makers, and that she is allowed a swift retirement to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee rather than being left to languish at the Dallas Zoo.
Born Free USA / Animal Protection Institute (API): Stop the Capture and Slaughter of Thousands of Dolphins in Japan —Join the Global Initiative for Japan Dolphin Day
Around 23,000 dolphins and porpoises are killed throughout Japan every year. The largest single slaughter of dolphins in the world is the dolphin drive in Taiji, Japan, where the dolphins are killed in a most brutal manner. You can help change this by joining your voice with many others today and on Wednesday, September 3 — Japan Dolphin Day — to express your outrage at this horrific practice.
Center for Biological Diversity: Tell Wal-Mart to Live Up to Its Clean Power Promise
Wal-Mart, the largest private purchaser of electricity in the United States, claims that environmental sustainability is among its chief goals. The retailer’s much-hyped sustainability initiatives include being supplied by 100-percent renewable energy. Going green is how Wal-Mart’s now branding itself. Except, of course, when it comes to taking more than token action to meet its renewable power objectives.
Consumers Union: Only weeks left to keep our local media local!
Six mega-corporations control most of what you see on TV news. Do you want them controlling your local newspapers, too? That could happen unless Congress acts soon to prevent our local media outlets from getting swallowed up. The FCC recently gutted rules that prevent one company from owning both the major daily newspaper and TV station in the same market. Tell Congress to overturn that decision now!
Dawnwatch: Biker animal rescuers — Rescue Ink — in New York Times – Sunday, 8/24/08
The Sunday, August 24 New York Times, has a long, wonderful, deliciously written article, by Caroline Dworin, headed, “Heaven’s Angels.” (City section Page 1) It’s about a band of tattooed bikers who share “a peculiar tenderness for animals, and the intensity needed to act on the animals’ behalf when people abuse them.”
DawnWatch: “The Cost of Steak” — LA Times — 8/23/08
The Saturday, August 23, Los Angeles Times included an important op-ed that gives us a great opportunity for letters to the editor. The piece, by Paul Roberts, author of “The End of Food,” is headed, “The cost of steak; Factory farms produce cheap meat, until you consider the rivers of sewage, the contaminants and the superbugs.” (Pg A 19)
DawnWatch: “Monkey” in Wash Post, Jenny in NY Times, and Animal Witness on Animal Planet — week 8/17 — 8/24/08
Today I send out a couple of important articles from the last week. There are developments on the Dallas-based elephant Jenny, published in the New York Times. There was a wonderful big piece in the Washington Post “Sunday Source” on my book and trip to Poplar Springs Animal Sanctuary. And we have news of a promising series beginning on Animal Planet this Sunday, which opens with an episode on the rehabilitation of the Vick dogs.
Earthjustice: Tell the Government NO to Offshore Drilling
Big Oil and their White House allies want you to believe that opening up America’s coasts to offshore drilling will lower your gas prices. In reality, Bush’s own Department of Energy says that offshore drilling would have “no significant impact” on gasoline prices, and we won’t even see those meager savings until 2025.
Ecological Internet / The Rainforest Portal: Action Alert: Fund Ecuador to Keep Oil Underground and Rainforests Standing for Our Shared Climate
It is time for the international community led by Europe to step up and finance large-scale Amazon rainforest preservation to protect the Earth’s atmosphere, biodiversity, and life-giving ecosystems; while helping meet needs for national advancement.
Greenpeace: Leave an impression on your Representative
The idea is simple: Make sure Congress gets the picture. Americans demand solutions to global warming and we need champions in Congress to make them happen. Even if you didn’t get a chance to stop by your Representative’s office last week, you can still make sure Congress hears from you! Just pick out a picture of something dear to you that’s being threatened by global warming and write a brief message explaining your concerns.
Greenpeace: Tell Kimberly-Clark to stop the Iron*E
In what must surely be the absolute height of tragic irony, Kimberly-Clark (K-C) is using Wall*E, the main character of a movie about conservation, to sell disposable paper products that contain absolutely no recycled content. There’s no excuse for destroying ancient forests to make disposable products such as tissues and toilet paper.
In Defense of Animals (IDA): The Endangered Species Act Needs Your Help
Are your representatives trying to weaken the Endangered Species Act before leaving office?
National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS): Federal: Ban Double-Decker Horse Trailers for Interstate Travel
This bill would prohibit the use of double-decker or higher vehicles for the transportation of horses in interstate commerce. It is very straight forward proposition: double-decker transport vehicles are not suitable for the transportation of horses. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), humane societies and veterinary associations, two-tiered trailers are an unsafe, cruel and inhumane method of transporting horses.
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Tell the Bush Administration to protect endangered wildlife!
The Interior Department has announced a plan that would dramatically undercut the Endangered Species Act — our nation’s safety net for animals and plants on the brink of extinction. If finalized, the plan would allow government agencies with no formal wildlife expertise to decide the fate of imperiled species like the polar bear, the gray wolf and whales. Even worse, those agencies may have a pro-polluter or pro-development agenda that is directly at odds with the well-being of wildlife.
Oceana: Tell Dr. Lark to Stop Selling Squalane!
Dr. Susan Lark promotes squalane – an ingredient found in sharks – for its ability to help skin “maintain its moisture and elasticity.” But squalane can be obtained from a much more abundant source: olives. Deep-sea sharks are some of the most vulnerable sharks in the world. They typically grow slowly, mature late in life and have only a few young during their long lives. As a result, deep sea shark populations are at extreme risk from exploitation and recover very slowly.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Help Save Dolphins From the Japanese Killing Cove
In Japan, fishers round up and slaughter approximately 23,000 dolphins and small whales each year. In the small fishing village of Taiji, entire schools of dolphins are driven into a hidden cove after a prolonged chase. Once trapped inside the cove, the fishers kill the dolphins by cutting their throats with knives or stabbing them with spears. The water turns red with the dolphins’ blood, and the air is filled with their screams. This horrific massacre goes on for six months every year.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Fate of Neglected Dog Unknown; Please Help Us Get Answers
On August 14, we contacted the Wright County Sheriff’s Office about this horribly neglected dog in Mansfield, Missouri. In addition, we shared our concerns with the Humane Society of Missouri—a solid agency with a lot on their plate. However, neither the agency nor the Sheriff’s Office has responded to our recent and repeated inquires about this poor animal, so we don’t know if the dog is dead, alive, or missing.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): URGENT: Fate Unknown for ‘Countless’ Chickens Injured in Perdue Truck Crash
Calls and e-mails from PETA caseworkers to Perdue officials have gone unanswered. Please contact the company directly and ask them for their assurance that immediate efforts are being made to humanely alleviate the suffering of the injured chickens.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Tell Las Vegas Apartment Complex to Stop Poisoning Birds
Several residents of The Breakers at the Lakes apartment complex in Las Vegas have told us that the complex’s management has set out “poisoned corn” in order to kill unwanted pigeons at the complex. We are told that at least one pigeon was seen dying a long, agonizing death this past weekend after ingesting the poison. As long as Avitrol—the poison that is likely being used—remains in use at this apartment complex, pigeons and many other animals are at risk.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urgent: Please Urge Sheriff to Assist Emaciated Horse
Our calls to the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office in the hope of getting quick help for a skeletal horse are not being returned. This poor horse, who appears to be on death’s door, is reportedly located at 1395 Old Union Rd. in Adamsville, Tennessee. The property apparently belongs to a self-professed “animal rescuer.”
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Dogs in St. Florian, Alabama, Need Your Help!
Caring area residents recently contacted PETA about two reportedly penned dogs located at 173 Rolling Hills Dr. in St. Florian, Alabama. After seeing photos of these animals, we understood their concern. To add to our worry, the complainants told us that these dogs sometimes don’t have access to water.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Demand That Animals Be Confiscated From Alleged Dog Beater
According to news sources, Greenland, New Hampshire, resident and alleged chronic animal-beater Carol Pugh was charged with felony cruelty to animals after witnesses reported watching in horror as she repeatedly struck her Burmese mountain dog in the face and kicked the animal in the ribs as the dog cowered and screamed. Pugh was apparently angry with the dog because he “ran off” for an hour. This dog and two others reportedly remain in Pugh’s custody.
Save the Manatee Club: Take Action to Protect Manatees!; Prevent Changes to the Endangered Species Act
Recently, it was discovered that highly detrimental changes to the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) had been proposed by officials in the Bush Administration. These changes would remove independent reviews of projects with potential endangered species impacts that have been mandated since the ESA’s inception 35 years ago.
The Sierra Club: Take Action: Tell Mutual Funds to Act on Global Warming
Ten of the largest mutual fund families in the country are acting like global warming won’t affect our planet, the economy, or their investors. While these mutual funds are dragging their feet, institutional investors with trillions of dollars in assets are looking at the cost of global warming and filing climate change resolutions to protect their investors.
Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS): Bush Takes Parting Shot at Endangered Species Act
The Endangered Species Act has protected hundreds of species from extinction, as well as contributed to population increases and the recovery of species like the peregrine falcon. But now the Bush administration has proposed weakening this historic legislation by allowing any federal agency to decide for itself whether or not protected species would be threatened by projects such as roads, dams, or mines.
United Poultry Concerns (UPC): A Wing & A Prayer – The Kapparot Chicken-Swinging Ritual
Kapparot (kaparos), which means “atonements,” is a custom preceding Yom Kippur – the Jewish Day of Atonement – in which chickens are ritually sacrificed by many Orthodox Hasidic observers. The observer “swings” the chicken, held by the legs or by pinning the bird’s wings backward, around his or her head, while reciting a chant in a gesture of transferring one’s sins of the past year onto the bird. The chicken is then slaughtered, and may or may not be given to the poor.
World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA): Urge Japan to stop cruel dolphin drive hunts
Every year between September and April thousands of dolphins are brutally killed off the shores of the Japanese coastal towns of Taiji and Futo. Please write to Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki at the Embassy of Japan in the U.S. and politely request that Japan stop cruel dolphin drive hunts immediately.
World Wildlife Fund (WWF): Push for a Real Solution to High Gas Prices
U.S. activists: Tell your members of Congress to reject oil drilling along our nation’s coasts and to push for a real solution to high gas prices — one that is sustainable and doesn’t threaten our environmental heritage.
