CREDO Action: This is America. We don’t jail journalists here.
Jailing journalists is unacceptable in a democracy. But that’s exactly what is happening at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn. Award winning journalist and host of “Democracy Now” Amy Goodman was arrested by St. Paul police while covering a protest outside the Republican National Convention. Though clearly identified as press, Goodman was charged with “obstruction of a legal process and interference with a ‘peace officer.’” Two of her producers were arrested for “suspicion of felony riot.”
Ecological Internet / Climate Ark: inal Push Needed to Stop Australia’s Tasmanian Ancient Forest Pulp Mill
Gunns of Australia’s controversial plans to build a huge pulp mill to make disposable consumer items largely from clearfelling ancients forests is close to failing, let us together make a final decisive push to warn off potential investors and environmental approvals and achieve its permanent withdrawal.
Farm Sanctuary: Help Seal the Loophole for Downed Cattle and Urge Protection for Other Farm Animals. Send Your Comments to the USDA Today!
On August 27, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) published a proposed rule on the “Disposition of Downer Cattle,” and the agency is now seeking your input. Please send in your comments today, supporting the USDA’s proposed rule that all downed cattle – including those who become downed after inspection – be banned from slaughter.
Free Press: Stop the Arrests of Journalists. Sign the Letter.
Police in St. Paul arrested several journalists yesterday, including Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman and an AP photographer as they were covering protests of the Republican National Convention. And earlier this weekend, police raided a meeting of the video journalists’ group I-Witness with firearms drawn to arrest independent media, bloggers and videomakers. Fill out the form below to demand that press intimidation cease immediately and that all charges be dropped.
Greenpeace: Don’t gamble on offshore oil
Record high gas prices have been making headlines for the past few months, and some politicians and corporations are taking advantage of the dire situation by organizing a push to lift a 27-year moratorium on drilling for oil along our coastlines. The Minerals Management Service is accepting public comments on its new 5-year drilling plan that would open up more of our coasts to oil drilling. Voice your opinion today and help lead the charge for real solutions, like renewable energy, instead of false solutions that will threaten this country’s coasts with oil spills and contribute to global warming.
The Sierra Club: America Needs Clean Energy, Not More Drilling
New energy legislation introduced by Speaker Nancy Pelosi will soon come up for a vote. The bill will force drilling supporters to admit whether they really want to move America forward or simply want to give more handouts to Big Oil. The bill starts us on the path to a clean energy future and moves us away from our dependence on fossil fuels. It also cracks down on giveaways to Big Oil coupled with real investment in renewable energy and transportation alternatives.
