Common Cause: No More Abramoffs
Who can forget Jack Abramoff? The former Washington lobbyist, currently serving a prison term for his role in a fraudulent Florida casino boat deal, is set to be sentenced tomorrow on charges of conspiracy, fraud and tax evasion. Abramoff’s sentencing reminds us what can happen when wealthy donors and special interests wield too much power in our political system. Let’s make sure that our elected officials put the public interest ahead of the big-money interests by supporting a system of Fair Elections.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Stop Alaska’s Aerial Hunting Program – From Spreading To Yellowstone!
Alaska voters recently defeated a ballot initiative that would have ended the state’s brutal aerial hunting program. As we prepare for another bloody aerial hunting season in Alaska, we must increase our efforts to pass the PAW Act – to bring an end to Alaska’s aerial hunting program, and prevent programs like it from spreading to places like the Greater Yellowstone region.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Urge San Francisco Board of Supervisors To Help Animals At SF Zoo
San Francisco is faced with an exciting opportunity – to make the city-owned zoo a model institution for animal welfare and to teach respect and compassion for all. San Francisco Supervisor Chris Daly has introduced an ordinance that addresses longstanding animal welfare problems at the San Francisco Zoo and transforms it into a world-class facility that will make all citizens proud.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Does Our United States Army Really Need To Shoot Live Pigs?
On July 18 the U.S. Army 25th Garrison Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii conducted a training program for soldiers that consisted of shooting live, anesthetized pigs with high-powered M16A2 and M4 rifles, claiming that this cruel exercise was carried out to prepare combat medics to deal with battlefield injuries.

Ocean Conservancy: Oppose changes that would weaken the Endangered Species Act
North Atlantic right whales are among the most endangered whales found in US waters. The Endangered Species Act plays an important role in protecting these few remaining whales, but this landmark law is under attack. Tell your elected officials to do what they can to stop the departments of Commerce and Interior from making such a drastic change.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Demand That Officials Throw the Book at Alleged Abuser of Elderly Horse!
Uxbridge, Massachusetts, District Court Judge Paul Losapio is currently presiding over the heartbreaking case of the alleged cruelty to and neglect of Quincy, an elderly quarter horse mare. Quincy’s guardian, Elliott Saffran, faces cruelty-to-animals charges after allegedly leaving Quincy to suffer without any veterinary care or pain medicine for her crippling rheumatoid arthritis, among other medical conditions. We are told that Saffran also repeatedly refused to put poor Quincy out of her misery and pain, even after he was arrested in January and charged with causing her needless suffering.

The Sierra Club: Protect the Endangered Species Act
Last week, the Department of the Interior proposed sweeping changes to this landmark environmental law. Under the new regulations, federal agencies would no longer have to consult with experts at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service. Instead, the agency proposing the project would have the power to decide how it would affect wildlife. These proposed changes are being bulldozed through and the DOI is only accepting comments from the public until September 15, 2008. In addition, they are not accepting email comments. Please use our talking points below to draft and submit your personalized comments. The Sierra Club will compile and deliver them before the September 15th deadline.

Campaign Updates

United Poultry Concerns (UPC): Canandaigua Academy Reneges on Pledge to Remove Chicken Slaughter Project from the Curriculum, Plans to Resume the Cruelty
In the Summer issue of Poultry Press, we gratefully announced: “Chicken Slaughter Project at Canandaigua Academy in New York Stopped Due to Public Outrage.” We invited our members to join us in thanking Lynne Erdle, principal of Canandaigua Academy (a high school in upstate New York), for stopping the classroom killing of chickens in an ecology class that, in December 2007, slaughtered 21 chickens using procedures school administrators have refused to describe. Sadly, in July, the Canandaigua Daily Messenger reported that the May decision to stop the project was being reconsidered. This week Canandaigua Academy administrators announced that the project will continued to be offered as an elective.
