American Rivers: Thank the EPA for Dumping the [Yazoo] Pumps Once and For All!
I am thrilled to report that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a Clean Water Act veto for the Yazoo Pumps, putting an end to this outrageously destructive project once and for all. This historic victory would not have been possible without your help in speaking out against this project. I hope you will help us again and thank the EPA for its historic and environmentally responsible decision.

Born Free USA / Animal Protection Institute (API): Urge Retailers to go Fur Free! - Sign the International Petition Today
Fur used in fashion is innately cruel. The unfortunate animals involved in fur fashion are either factory “farmed” or trapped and then killed, only to end up as a bit of trim or other so-called fashion item. We need you to do your part and work with us at Born Free USA united with Animal Protection Institute to put an end to this senseless and brutal practice.

DawnWatch: Ecorazzi covers Thanking the Monkey and new promo video 9/2/08
This morning I did the tough stuff — now I get to do the fun stuff. Those of you who are interested in pop culture and also in animals and the environment need to know about the fabulous Ecorazzi site! This week, because Thanking the Monkey is so colorful and celebrity laden, Ecorazzi published an interview with me.

Earthjustice: Tell Congress to Extend the Renewable Energy Tax Credit
The clean energy tax credit will expire at the end of this year. Please — urge Congress to extend it. For decades, oil and other dirty energy sources have enjoyed subsidies that give them an unfair edge over renewable energy. The current tax credit for renewable energy generation helps level the playing field a bit, giving clean energy sources a fighting chance to become a more significant alternative to dirty energy.

Pacific Environment: Demand real energy security solutions!
With only five months left in office, the Bush Administration is pushing to ram a new 5-year offshore drilling plan through Minerals Management Service (MMS) that would put large coastal areas in the hands of oil companies and aggressively expand current drilling. Expert after expert has said we can’t drill our way to energy independence. Tell the MMS today to stop new oil drilling and demand real energy solutions!

People for the American Way (PFAW): Sign the Petition: Sarah Palin Doesn’t Speak For Me!
Sarah Palin, purporting to speak for small-town America, women and basically everyone who is not a member of the “Washington, DC elite,” used her speech last night at the Republican National Convention to stoke the fires of the culture war. It’s just another page out of the Far Right’s decades-old playbook. It makes us furious and we’re sure you feel the same. So we’re asking Americans just like you to stand up and say, “Sarah Palin Does Not Speak For Me!”

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): URGENT: Tell Festival to Ban Torture of Lobster as ‘Art’
On September 6 and 7, the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe is hosting Rodrigo Garcia’s play Accidens, in which a live lobster will reportedly be cut apart with scissors. We have received reports stating that this lobster will be chopped up alive, cooked, and eaten in front of an audience. Unlike humans and many other animals, lobsters have a complex nervous system that does not go into shock during serious trauma. When we contacted festival organizers, they called this torture “new and insightful,” but there is nothing creative about causing pain and suffering.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Demand That Video Cameras Be Installed in AgriProcessors Slaughterhouse
Demand that the USDA require that AgriProcessors install video cameras on the kill floor as part of a live video-monitoring system that would be audited by a third party. A number of plants already use this important technology, which is recommended by Dr. Grandin, and it ensures that proper procedures and laws are followed at all times.

The Wilderness Society: Healthy Energy Development: Protect Our Lands, Waters, and Public Health
As Congress takes up energy legislation this month, it’s essential our elected officials understand that the health of our lands, waters, and citizens comes first. Whatever shape the legislation takes, it’s essential that Congress ensure protection for our land, waters, and public health.

Campaign Updates

Free Press: Letters Protesting Journalist Arrests at RNC Delivered Today in St. Paul
Independent journalists and local advocates this morning delivered more than 60,000 letters to St. Paul City Hall, according to the Free Press media-reform group.

World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA): A symbol of hope: protecting Myanmar’s animals
Four months ago Cyclone Nargis struck the southwest coast of Myanmar, taking the lives of nearly 85,000 people and an estimated 48 million animals. In what would become the worst natural disaster in the history of the country, entire buildings were destroyed, crops polluted, and animals left in urgent need of food, medical attention, and care. WSPA was one of the first organizations allowed to enter Myanmar, and thanks to your support we were able to come to the aid of thousands of animals. Our teams worked for nearly two months to deliver needed food and medical care to cattle, buffalo, pigs, and other animals.
