Coal River Wind: Email the Governor
The residents of the Coal River Valley in West Virginia urgently need your help. A few weeks ago, we told you about the Coal River Mountain Wind Project that proposes to install a wind farm on Coal River Mountain, rather than blow it up to extract coal. Our friends in Coal River Valley thought they had months to stop the proposed mountaintop removal coal mining operation at Coal River Mountain, but the coal company, Massey Energy (financed by Bank of America), circumvented the law, altered the permits, and is set to begin blasting the mountain for coal TODAY, September 10. If they are allowed to proceed, the blasting will eliminate much of the potential for production of clean wind energy and creation of good, green jobs on Coal River Mountain. They need our help. Call or email Gov. Manchin today and ask him to issue a “stay of execution” for Coal River Mountain.
Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF): Keep Wireless Broadband on Track at the FCC
Within the next few months, the FCC is expected to decide the fate of cutting-edge wireless access through a proceeding titled “Unlicensed Operation in the TV Broadcast Bands”. Ideally, the FCC will permit new technologies to take advantage of unused “white space” spectrum to send and receive data wirelessly. Allowing open, unlicensed use could pave the way for faster, cheaper wireless broadband — leading to more ISP choices for consumers and a source of continued pressure for ISPs to maintain net neutrality.
In Defense of Animals (IDA): Three Suffering Elephants Need Your Help - Time is Running Out for Tina, Jewel, and Queenie
Tina, Jewel and Queenie have spent their summer being trucked around the country with Circus Vazquez. In Defense of Animals has been monitoring these elephants as they have passed from Texas, to Arizona, California, Oregon, Florida, Atlanta and North Carolina, on their way to Chicago and the Northeast.
In Defense of Animals (IDA): Stop Alaska’s Aerial Hunting Program - From Spreading To Yellowstone!
Alaska voters recently defeated a ballot initiative that would have ended the state’s brutal aerial hunting program. As we prepare for another bloody aerial hunting season in Alaska, we must increase our efforts to pass the PAW Act - to bring an end to Alaska’s aerial hunting program, and prevent programs like it from spreading to places like the Greater Yellowstone region.
Paid for by Big Oil: END BIG OIL’S ENERGY PLAN
We need to stop letting oil companies run our energy policy. To make America truly energy independent, we call on Congress to boost production of clean energy, end all tax breaks for oil companies, and resist the false promise of drilling in environmentally sensitive areas. We need an energy policy that isn’t paid for by big oil.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Ask Sierra Trading Post to Provide Fur Supplier’s Certification!
When compassionate people write to Sierra Trading Post with concerns about its sale of fur, some of which comes from China, Sierra Trading Post issues a form response stating that the company’s “research has produced certification by our vendor that their sources do not practice cruel or inhumane treatment of animals.” PETA has never found a fur farm where animals have been humanely raised and killed. We have asked Sierra Trading Post to provide its supplier’s certification, but the company has remained silent. Most likely, Sierra Trading Post is being duped—and in turn, it is misleading consumers by selling fur that comes from animals who were beaten, electrocuted, and even skinned alive.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): URGENT: U.S. Food Markets Are Torturing Turtles, Frogs, and Other Fragile Species
PETA regularly receives complaints from caring consumers who are sickened by the hellish conditions endured by turtles, frogs, eels, and other fragile exotic animals sold for human consumption at food markets across the U.S. Please contact the markets that, according to the reports that PETA has received, are keeping exotic animals in horrific conditions. Demand that these markets stop selling animals for human consumption.
Sierra Club: Fuel Economy Faster to Bring Down Gas Costs!
Congress showed tremendous foresight last year by increasing fuel economy standards to a minimum of 35 miles-per-gallon by 2020. But now the Bush Administration is undermining these efforts, using unrealistic assumptions — like $2.50 for the average cost of gas — to limit the potential of new fuel economy standards. Better fuel economy is a sure way to ease our pain at the pump, help reduce our addiction to oil and help fight global warming.
Campaign Updates
In Defense of Animals (IDA): Austrian Animal Rights Prisoners Released!
On May 21, 2008 masked and armed officers of the Austrian elite squad WEGA broke into homes and offices of animal rights workers and organizations at the crack of dawn. Ten people arrested in the raids were detained, and held in custody without being charged for specific wrongdoings. Thousands of you participated in our solidarity campaign to free the prisoners, and our efforts paid off.
