Alaska Wilderness League: Drilling Is Almost Here… Help Us Stop It!
The House of Representatives voted to end the moratorium on new offshore drilling. Big Oil can smell drilling on the horizon, and they’re getting even greedier – now they want to get their hands on the Arctic Refuge, too… We need to show the Senate that we see through Big Oil’s bluff. Oil is already down $50 a barrel from its high of $147 this summer. Drilling won’t mean a drop at the pump. When people speak up, we cannot be ignored.

Color of Change: Lose your home, Lose your vote? – Demand that John McCain stand up against his party’s shameful strategy to challenge voters
This year, Republicans in Michigan have hit an all-new low–they plan to target homeowners subject to foreclosure and prevent them from voting. Join us in demanding that John McCain denounce this plan and call on Republican leaders–in Michigan and around the country–to end this illegal strategy.

CREDO Action: Tell Harry Reid: Don’t cave on offshore drilling.
On Tuesday, September 16th, House Democrats reversed the position they’ve held for 26 years. They voted to allow offshore oil drilling. The House “compromise” bill will now come up for a vote in the Senate. As if this bill weren’t bad enough, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has stated that he will also allow a vote on a Republican bill that allows even more drilling than the House approved.

Defenders of Wildlife: Help Ensure a Lasting Future for Wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies
In March 2008, the Bush/Cheney Administration eliminated Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies. For months, wolves were slaughtered… until Defenders of Wildlife and our conservation allies prevailed in court and restored federal protections for these magnificent animals. Now the federal government is rescinding its plan to remove wolves from the list of federally protected species and going back to the drawing board for a new plan to manage wolves in the Northern Rockies.

(Note: If you use the sample letter, please remove the speciesist language prior to sending, e.g., “I also hope that you will work with conservationists, states, ranchers and other interested parties to craft a science-based, responsible and balanced federal management strategy that will benefit wolves, ranchers, hunters, Northern Rockies residents and all Americans who care deeply about wildlife conservation.”)

Earthjustice: Yes to Renewable Energy Tax Credits, No to the “Gang of Ten”
The Senate is poised to take up the New Energy Reform Act, also known as the Gang of 10 proposal, this week. Pro-drilling members of the Senate tout this bill as a bipartisan compromise, but in effect it is more of the same giveaways to Big Oil and King Coal that got us into our current energy and climate predicament in the first place. This time they are wrapped in a blanket of renewable energy and energy efficiency tax credits.

Farm Sanctuary: Abuse of Pigs on Hog Farms is Systemic in the Industry
An investigation released on Wednesday by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals reveals the cruel and inhumane underbelly of the pork industry – the horrific practices that are routine on factory hog farms. These grossly inhumane actions would be considered acts of felony animal cruelty in most states if performed on a dog or cat. Sadly, slamming the smallest and weakest piglets to the ground in an effort to kill them (thumping), slicing off the tails of piglets with no anesthesia, castration by a knife, and routine confinement of adult female “breeder” pigs for months at a time in crates so small they are unable to even turn around, are “common practices” on factory hog farms. Now is the time to take action!

Greenpeace: Offshore Oil = Increased Risk for Polar Bears
Polar bears are hanging on for dear life. They are faced with a rapidly shrinking arctic environment due to global warming. And now the Senate is poised to drive another nail in polar bears’ coffins by voting for more drilling off of America’s shores. More oil drilling will do nothing to lower gas prices. It will, however, increase global warming pollution and put the polar bear on an even faster track towards extinction.

Ocean Conservancy: Tell the Fisheries Service to Issue Strong Guidelines to ensure overfishing is ended once and for all
In too many of our nation’s fisheries – like Atlantic cod in New England and grouper in the Gulf of Mexico – we’re taking fish out of the ocean faster than they replace themselves. This practice – called “overfishing” – jeopardizes the health of our ocean and threatens fisheries and seafood resources across the nation. Right now, the federal agency that manages our fisheries is crafting guidelines that could tackle this persistent problem and create abundant fisheries. Sign our letter to the Fisheries Service. Urge them to stand up to overfishing and issue strong guidelines to save and protect our nation’s fisheries!

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Undercover Investigation Reveals Hormel Supplier’s Abuse of Mother Pigs and Piglets
For more than three months, PETA went undercover at an Iowa pig factory farm, which supplies piglets who are raised and killed for Hormel products. PETA found rampant cruelty to animals – committed by workers and supervisors. The farm changed ownership and management during PETA’s investigation, but that made no difference to the animals who were born and confined there: Abuse and neglect were widespread during PETA’s entire investigation.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Ask Bucknell University to End Cruel Experiments on Hamsters!
After being contacted by a concerned Bucknell University alumnus, PETA has learned that for 30 years, Prof. Owen Floody has been cutting holes into the skulls of female hamsters, damaging their brains, and observing the injuries’ effects on the hamsters’ sexual behavior. The animals are killed at the end of the experiments, and their brains are dissected. Floody even has his undergraduate students help torment animals in these experiments in his physiological psychology course.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Tell Island Veterinary School to Stop Cutting Up and Killing Animals!
Before enrolling at DeVry Inc’s Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, Jamie Scott says she was told that she would not have to harm any animals during her veterinary training. Now Ross says that if she doesn’t cut and kill healthy animals during surgical training sessions, she won’t be allowed to graduate. Jamie is now suing the school for misrepresentation and breach of contract.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): City of Kelowna, British Columbia, Is Shooting Rabbits After Promising to Use Humane Control Methods!
The City of Kelowna, British Columbia, announced earlier this year that measures would be taken to control the city’s burgeoning feral rabbit population. These feral rabbits—domestic animals who are likely the descendants of abandoned pet-store bunnies—are reportedly populating in large numbers and posing a problem for the local ecosystem and resident homeowners. Kelowna Urban Forestry Supervisor Ian Wilson assured PETA caseworkers that the rabbit-control measures would be humane. However, recent news sources indicate that Kelowna’s first move was not to attempt to trap the animals and relocate them to capable sanctuaries or even to trap and humanely euthanize them. Instead, it appears that Kelowna has hired an individual to canvas the city at night with an air rifle and shoot the feral rabbits.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Help Needed for Louisiana Animals Stranded by Hurricane Ike Flood Water
Hurricane Ike has left parts of Louisiana flooded and tragically, many animals who were not evacuated are stranded. In Vermillion Parish, salt water has reportedly saturated local fields, and cows have apparently been forced to take refuge on levees. We understand that many of these animals will remain trapped without access to food or drinking water until the water recedes. Other animals, including cats and dogs, are also stranded and in need of rescue at various locations throughout the affected areas.

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM): Ask the USDA for Vegetarian Options in Schools
Do you know that many vegetarian children cannot get lunch at school? At a time when American children need more vegetarian meals, the National School Lunch Program does not include any provision for plant-based foods. In order to change that, the U.S. Department of Agriculture needs to hear from you today. The Child Nutrition Act includes legislation for the National School Lunch Program, which provides federal assistance for school lunches. This act is being reauthorized in 2009, and the USDA would like your input on what needs to change. Submit your recommendations for improving vegetarian options.

Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA): Tell Congress Oil Shale is Just Not Ready
With the 110th Congress’s final legislative hours ticking down, Utah’s congressional delegation is pulling every string it can to stimulate destructive oil shale development on Utah’s federal public lands. For years, oil shale, which consists of an oil-like substance (kerogen) trapped in rock, has been touted as a panacea for the nation’s energy woes. But, due to the difficulty of extracting it and the environmental damage caused by current methods of extraction, it has never been an economically viable or profitable energy source.

True Food Network: Tell FDA that Irradiation is NOT the Solution to Food-Borne Illness
The FDA recently announced that it will allow food producers to start irradiating fresh spinach and iceberg lettuce in an attempt to kill E. coli O157:H7 and other bacteria that cause food-borne illnesses, despite health, safety, and nutritional loss concerns. Irradiation is not the solution to food-borne illness. It is ineffective on many disease-causing microbes and reduces the nutritional content of foods. Most importantly, its use serves to distract attention from the unsanitary conditions of industrial agriculture that creates the problem in the first place.

(Note: Such as factory farming and animal agriculture…)

The Wilderness Society: No Road Through Izembek!
We cannot afford to sacrifice the irreplaceable Wilderness wetlands of the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to build a road that is harmful, expensive, and unnecessary. Please write your Senators and Representative today to ask them to oppose the Izembek road bills (S. 1680/H.R. 2801), and to keep those bills off any package of public lands bills being sent to the Senate or House floor for a vote.

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Wolves Win: Bush Administration Backs Down, For Now
LIVINGSTON, Mont. (September 17, 2008) –The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will withdraw its decision to remove endangered species protections from the gray wolf in the Northern Rockies, according to press reports. Federal protections of wolves will continue for wolves in Yellowstone, Central Idaho and Glacier ecosystems. This development comes on the heels of a federal judge’s decision on a suit brought by NRDC and 11 other conservation groups that blocked the delisting decision. Recently the Department of Interior has been roundly criticized over proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act.
