DawnWatch: Iowa Hog Farm Abuse Video and California’s Prop 2 — 9/16 -9/21/08
A distressing story of animal abuse hit the news on Tuesday, September 16, and continues to make news, including in a superb Huffington Post piece published today. A PETA undercover investigator has released video taken at an Iowa hog farm that documents both illegal and legal abuse.

Earthjustice: Keep Harmful Pesticides Out of Salmon Rivers!
The federal government has the opportunity — and the duty — to protect people and salmon from dangerous pesticides. You know that the government is hearing from the chemical companies. Let them hear from you!

Green Jobs Now: Sign the “I’m Ready” Petition
I urge our elected officials to invest in creating millions of green jobs and a Clean Energy Corps. We can’t drill and burn our way out of the current crisis. We can invest and invent our way out. We can create new pathways out of poverty and curb global warming at the same time. We will do this by retooling our factories, rebuilding our communities, and repowering America with 100% clean and renewable electricity. It’s time to build an inclusive green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty.

National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS): Urge McDonald’s to Take a Stand Against Animal Cloning
Please send a letter to McDonald’s and ask them to make good on their pledge to be socially responsible and reject the use of products from cloned animals and their offspring. Cloning causes enormous animal suffering and is not an acceptable means of selective breeding. Join NAVS and other advocacy groups in speaking out against animal cloning.

National Wildlife Federation (NWF): Tell Congress to Take Oil Shale Off the Table
Development of a new energy source – oil shale – is being proposed for two million acres of America’s cherished public lands. Some members of Congress want to rush us into developing oil shale despite the reality that it will put millions of acres of wildlife habitat at risk, threaten a significant portion of our country’s water source and dramatically increase global warming pollution.

National Wildlife Federation (NWF): Ask Congress to Stand Up for the Endangered Species Act
The Bush administration is quietly making plans during its last months in office to remove important protections granted by the Endangered Species Act. Since 1973, the Endangered Species Act has served as America’s safety net for wildlife. It has saved hundreds of species from extinction, put hundreds more on the road to recovery and safeguarded the habitats upon which they depend.

Oceana: Tell the government to protect sea turtles from trawls.
Many of our country’s trawl fisheries accidentally injure and kill endangered sea turtles by entangling them in their massive nets. Fortunately, there’s a Turtle Excluder Device – or TED – and it’s an “escape hatch” that allows a sea turtle to wiggle out of the trawl net, relatively unharmed. While some fisheries use TEDs, too many do not, and are not required to. Help convince the government to protect these ancient creatures by requiring TEDs in all trawl fisheries in the U.S. that operate in areas with sea turtles.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urge Canada Goose to Stop Selling Fur
Canada Goose, an outerwear retailer, knows about the suffering that goes into every fur-trimmed garment, but the company continues to contribute to it by using fur. With so many fashionable, warm, and durable alternatives available today, there is no excuse for Canada Goose to continue using the fur of tortured animals in its designs. Please join us in urging Canada Goose to follow the lead of other designers and retailers—including Burton, North Face, Columbia Sportswear, Mountain Hardwear, Coldwater Creek, and others—who have already adopted permanent fur-free policies.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Ask U.C. Irvine to Stop Cruel Rat and Frog Experiments!
Tipped off by a distraught former University of California—Irvine (U.C. Irvine) student, PETA has learned that the university conducts highly invasive in-class experiments on frogs and rats. PETA has already contacted U.C. Irvine about these experiments and suggested ways that the school could transition to a humane curriculum. Now, we are calling on you to help end these cruel classroom experiments. Please contact Michael V. Drake, chancellor of U.C. Irvine, and politely ask him to end these experiments and implement humane, non-animal teaching methods in the university’s science courses.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Dogs in Blackshear, Georgia, Need Your Help
On August 1, PETA caseworkers sent a memo to Pierce County officials asking them to please take action on behalf of several allegedly neglected dogs in Blackshear, Georgia. While the Sheriff’s Department made several visits to the properties in question, it appears that four dogs at 2284 Live Oak Ln. are still being denied the adequate shelter that is required by law. We are told that two adults dogs have ramshackle doghouses, that one puppy has a dresser that looks about ready to fall over and possibly injure the dog, and that a second puppy might have no shelter at all.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urgent: Starving Deer Dying, Abused on Sacred Island
Miyajima, near the coast of Hiroshima, is known as “Shrine Island” and is considered one of the holiest places in Japan. Tourists from all over the world flock to the island every year. Deer who are indigenous to the island have come to rely on the public to feed them—a longstanding tradition that was encouraged for years. However, authorities recently prohibited feeding the deer, and the deer are now reportedly starving to death.

PETA2: Zappos.com Sells Fur. Tell Them To Stop!
I’ve bought stuff from them previously and even just got a pair of running shoes, but I did not know that they sell fur! Sick! When I heard that Zappos.com refuses to stop selling fur, despite some polite discussion with PETA, I knew it was time to call upon all of you to speak out for animals. Please send the company a message here demanding that it goes fur-free.

Campaign Updates

Ecological Internet / The Rainforest Portal: RELEASE: Friends of the Earth Rejects Forest Stewardship Council
Major victory for Ecological Internet’s campaign to end ancient forest logging as key response to climate and biodiversity crises.

Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF): Humane Society Legislative Fund Endorses Obama-Biden
I’m proud to announce today that the HSLF board of directors — which is comprised of both Democrats and Republicans — has voted unanimously to endorse Barack Obama for President. The Obama-Biden ticket is the better choice on animal protection, and we urge all voters who care about the humane treatment of animals, no matter what their party affiliation, to vote for them. (My reply here.)

United Poultry Concerns (UPC): United Poultry Concerns Urges Compassionate Kapparot Ceremonies
“We’re not asking that Kapparot be abandoned; just the use of chickens.” – UPC president Karen Davis, quoted in “Questioning Kapparot,” B’nai B’rith Magazine, Fall 2008 Edition
