Dear Gina,

September 30th, 2008 12:16 am by Kelly Garbato

I’m not sure whether you remember us, but two years ago this September 30th, my husband and I adopted two dogs from Friends of the Friendless. Gracie and Penelope were found abandoned with a third dog, Paige, in a home that was about to be sold. While you were able to place Paige with a new family, Gracie and Penelope were still with you six months later, when we came to visit after seeing them on Petfinder. (I included their adoption listings to jog your memory. Last I checked, they were still available on Petfinder, in the “happy tales” section!)

Since their two-year anniversary is fast approaching, we thought you might like to know what your girls are up to!

Back then, we already had three dogs – Ralphie the dachshund and Peedee and O-Ren the rat terriers – and lived south of the city, in a rental home in Stilwell. We’ve since bought our own place up north of the city, in Plattsburg, with concrete floors (impermeable to dog pee!) and a huge fenced backyard for the dogs. The dogs are all doing well together; while they’ve formed their own little cliques, they all seem to enjoy one another’s company.

After the adoption, Gracie (now Kaylee) had the quickest adjustment period. Aside from some anxious peeing (which is totally understandable – she’s been through quite a bit), she’s a joy. She follows me pretty much everywhere, even into the bathroom, and can’t stand to be out of my line of sight. She gets along well with Peedee and O-Ren; the three love playing together. Peedee can easily outrun the girls, so their play sessions usually take place in short bursts. Kaylee and O-Ren are especially adorable together – they remind me of a momma sow and her baby piglet, their mannerisms and personalities so resemble one another’s (and those of a pig, natch).

Kaylee had some pretty funky teeth, including two huge canines that resemble(d) fangs. When she was with Friends of the Friendless, you guys had quite a bit of dental work done on her. In the past two years, she’s gone under twice for dental work – she had six teeth removed the first time, three the second (including one of her fangs!). She’s doing much better now; the dental surgeon (we took her to an actual doggie dentist in Overland Park) thought that her bad teeth were causing her more than a little discomfort. Since she practically seems like a new dog since the surgery (she’s so much more active now, and even more of a food hog than before), we tend to agree. I think the surgery shaved at least three years off her age!

And then there’s Jayne. Penelope (now Jayne) is more of a loner. She was a pretty nervous girl when she first came to us, but she’s slowly coming out of her shell. At night, she has a choice between sleeping in the bed with Shane, myself and the other dogs, or in a crate by herself. More and more, she’s working her way onto the bed. She’s definitely more protective of her space than the other dogs, though. Looking at the photos, you can see that Kaylee, Peedee, O-Ren and Ralphie lay around draped on top of one another, while Jayne usually stays a few feet away from the group, just on the outskirts.

Jayne has done a little bonding with Ralphie; the two share a love of digging up the yard and chasing squirrels and other furry little critters. Jayne’s also absolutely obsessed with our cat, Ozzy. Luckily, our new house is arranged so that we can split it in half by closing two interior doors; Ozzy has his side of the house and the dogs have theirs. You can often find Jayne sulking in the flower beds outside…right under Ozzy’s window. I don’t know if you recall, but she showed the same preoccupation with the cats at your shelter, and spent most of our visit trying to find those felines on the other side of the door. Ozzy, for one, does not appreciate the attention!

Though they’re very different, the girls do share a few characteristics. Both are terrified of thunderstorms. Jayne will hide in the closet until the storm passes. Even though she’s normally the mellower of the two, Kaylee becomes even more frantic during storms than Jayne: she’ll run under the bed and then come out the other side, dart into the closet and back out 90 seconds later, hide in the bathroom, between the couch and chair, behind the office desk. She’s inconsolable, whereas Jayne manages to calm herself down a bit. I’m guessing that they were “outdoor” dogs at one point, hence the elevated fear of rain and thunder.

They’re also both little piggies with their food. After mealtimes, Kaylee and Jayne will linger in the kitchen, licking everyone else’s bowls clean. Usually they’ll do a second or even third round, just to be sure. Kaylee will even follow Shane and I into the kitchen when we’re done eating, in hopes of getting a little lick off our plates. It’s crazy adorable. (Seriously, her face is so sad, resistance is futile.)

Anyway, that’s the long and short of it. Included are some older and more recent photos of the girls, along with their new siblings. I hope you enjoy looking through them, as much as I enjoyed putting them together.

We want to thank you so much for rescuing Kaylee and Jayne, and for bringing them into our lives. They are the sweetest, most loving girls, and we’re so grateful to know them. Thank you – for all you do – from the bottoms of our hearts.

For the animals,
