easyVegan Link Sanctuary, 2008-10-21
October 21st, 2008 8:18 pm by Kelly GarbatoAbout
The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy news, action alerts, carnivals, events and resources. This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!
If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included below. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources below; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.
Action Alerts
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): Protect Your Right to Vote vote_button_1
Recently, Attorney General Michael Mukasey told voting rights advocates that the “smooth” running of the election was the Department of Justice’s highest priority. With one of the most important elections in our lifetime only two weeks away, keeping the promise is critical. Yet, despite the ACLU’s repeated requests for the DOJ to take action to protect voters and stop suppressive tactics, the Department has yet to live up to its commitment.
DawnWatch: LA Times Prop 2 piece by Karen Dawn — 10/21/08
As the election grows close and California prepares to vote on Proposition 2, which is bound to have an enormous national effect on animal welfare, the Los Angeles Times today, Tuesday October 21, ran my op-ed on the issue in its Blowback section.
DawnWatch: Tuesday 9:30am Eastern, WPFW hour with Karen Dawn and Thanking the Monkey 10/21/08
WPFW, Washington DC’s Pacifica Station, has been wonderfully supportive of animal issues of late. During my recent trip to DC, we did a segment on their Friday drive time news about that weekend’s national animal rights conference. And Gloria Minott also interviewed me separately, on Metro Watch, about my upcoming visit to Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary.
DawnWatch 2: Access Hollywood and Alicia Silverstone’s Animal Acres visit
On Sunday, October 19, Access Hollywood aired a delightful segment on Alicia Silverstone’s visit to Animal Acres for the annual gala. It is not to be missed. Most importantly, please thank the show for the segment.
International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW): Thank eBay for Banning All Trade in Ivory
Victory: eBay has just announced that it will be instituting a global ban on the sale of elephant ivory products. eBay’s decision was announced just hours before the release of IFAW’s latest investigative report showing Internet trade in wildlife poses a significant and immediate threat to the survival of elephants and many other endangered species.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urge Amazon.com to Stop Selling Fur
Now we need you to help us convince Amazon to follow Zappos’ lead and become fur-free, as so many other retailers—including Nike, Gap, J. Crew, Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Forever 21—have. Please use the form below to send an e-mail to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos asking him to remove fur from the Amazon.com Web site permanently!
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Help Make Nicotine Experiments on Animals Go ‘Up in Smoke’
Please contact officials at the National Institutes of Health and politely ask that the agency end its decades-long policy of funding nicotine experiments on animals and instead redirect tax money to prevention, education, and human-based research.
United Farm Workers (UFW): Join Senator Obama in supporting the Beef Northwest workers
Presidential candidate Barack Obama knows the truth about the situation at Beef Northwest, which has industrial feedlots in Eastern Oregon and Washington. He recognizes that a majority of workers have already voted for the union. He urged Beef Northwest to begin negotiations with the UFW, which is the representative the workers’ voted for. Please join Senator Obama in adding your voice to the workers’ struggle. Demand that Whole Foods recognize that a majority of workers want a union. It’s time for Whole Foods to join Senator Obama and thousands of others in adding their influence to help these workers, instead of fighting workers who simply want a better life.
Campaign Updates
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Investigation of ONPRC Reveals Horrifying Abuse of Monkeys Used in Useless Experiments
The Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) keeps more than 4,000 monkeys and uses them in cruel studies. In 2007, this facility received more than $33 million in taxpayer money, much of which is spent on needless studies of illnesses that have already been well researched using clinical data from humans. During a four-month undercover investigation inside the facility, PETA documented that monkeys were driven insane by laboratory conditions. The investigation revealed that the monkeys were confined to small, barren cages and lived in constant fear of employees’ rough handling.
PETA2: UPDATE: Hormel Supplier Investigation
Remember the shocking footage from an undercover investigation of a factory farm in Iowa that raises pigs destined for Hormel? PETA’s undercover investigators documented workers repeatedly hitting pigs with metal gate rods and canes, a worker slamming the heads of piglet “runts” into the floor, and a supervisor who shoved a cane into a sow’s vagina and talked about sexually abusing pigs. Even after the farm changed ownership and management during the investigation, this horrifying treatment and abuse of animals continued. That being said, we have just released previously unseen footage from the investigation, showing the farm manager kicking and shocking a crippled pig.
