About

The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy news, action alerts, carnivals, events and resources. This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!

If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included below. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources below; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.

Action Alerts

Center for Biological Diversity: Protect Ice Seals From Global Warming
In response to the Center’s petition, the National Marine Fisheries Service is conducting a status review to determine whether three ice-dependent seals that inhabit Alaskan waters warrant protection under the Endangered Species Act. This is the first important step toward protection for ringed, bearded, and spotted seals — all of which are threatened with extinction by the rapid loss of their Arctic sea-ice habitat due to global warming. Please let the Bush administration know that you support the protection of these seals, and that we must reduce greenhouse gas pollution immediately to slow global warming and save them from extinction.

Consumer Watchdog: ASK GOOGLE TO PROTECT YOUR PRIVACY
Your computer may be having a conversation about you with Google and you don’t even know it. That’s why we made this video: to show how Google tracks your every key stroke, and to ask the company to stop. If you believe Google needs to better protect our privacy, please send a free message to the company’s board of directors through this link.

CREDO Action: Tell Mukasey: Don’t use the Department of Justice to suppress Ohio voters.
This year, there are over 600,000 newly registered Ohio voters, but President Bush has asked Attorney General Mukasey to investigate as many as 200,000 of them. Why? Because Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner has refused to use an “exact match” standard before adding these voters to the rolls.

DawnWatch: “Blinders,” about horse drawn carriages, airs on TV starting Monday, 10/27/08

DawnWatch: Major NY Times coverage of Prop 2 and of Wayne Pacelle and HSUS — 10/24- 10/26/08
Over the last few days the New York Times has paid some much needed attention to the plight of animals used for food. The Friday October 24 edition included a lengthy piece headed, “A California Ballot Measure Offers Rights for Farm Animals.” And today’s October 26 New York Times Magazine section includes a feature about the work of HSUS’s Wayne Pacelle and others on California’s Proposition 2, and about farm animal advocacy in general, headed “The Barnyard Strategist.”

Earthjustice: Tell EPA: Act Now on Global Warming Pollution
In one of the most important environmental cases of its history, in early 2007, the Supreme Court affirmed what Earthjustice had been saying all along: the Clean Air Act gives the Environmental Protection Agency the authority to fight global warming. The EPA must act immediately and issue regulations that limit global warming pollution.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urge Congress to Protect Chickens and Turkeys
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Humane Methods of Livestock Slaughter Act (HSA). Originally passed by Congress to stop animals from being cut open and mutilated in slaughterhouses while still conscious, the law does not protect chickens, turkeys, or other birds. These gentle, much-abused animals comprise over 98 percent of the land animals killed for food every year in this country. It is time for our government to provide these animals with at least minimal legal protection from wanton pain and abuse.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Free Sammy the Shark!
A week after Sammy—a 13-foot–long female whale shark—wandered into the shallow waters off of Dubai’s Gulf Coast, she was captured by the Palm Atlantis Hotel for display in its aquarium. In the wild, Sammy would swim the ocean freely, but at the Palm Atlantis, she is confined to a tank that is much smaller than her natural environment, and she is deprived of everything that is natural and important to her.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): URGENT: Starving Deer Dying, Abused on Sacred Island
Miyajima (Itsukushima Jinja), near the coast of Hiroshima, is known as “Shrine Island” and is considered one of the holiest places in Japan. Tourists from all over the world flock there every year. Deer, indigenous to this island, have come to rely on the public to feed them—a longstanding tradition that was encouraged for years. However feeding has now been prohibited by authorities, and the deer are now reportedly starving to death. Apparently survivors are in terrible shape and so desperate for food that they are eating plastic bags and other hazardous items. Sources claim that island residents are attacking animals who venture into town in search of sustenance. We’re also told that many deer have been quietly trucked away, their fates unknown.

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM): Sign Our Petition to the Next President and Help Save Animals!
On November 5, the president-elect will begin forming his new Cabinet. Please sign our petition immediately to request that he appoint a new Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) who will have the power to save hundreds of thousands of animals from pain and death by requiring the use of scientifically-proven nonanimal tests where possible.

Public Citizen: No More Taxpayer Bailouts!
In September, Warren Buffett bailed out Constellation Energy for $4.7 billion. In purchasing Constellation, Buffett has inherited a partnership with French government-owned, Electricite de France. The 50-50 partnership, known as UniStar, has its paws in four states and four separate nuclear reactors that will cost nearly $10 billion each!! AND, UniStar wants to pay for them with loan guarantees subsidized by U.S. taxpayers. Under the company’s plan, outlined at Maryland Public Service Commission hearings in July, U.S. taxpayers could be at risk for 80 percent of the reactor’s cost.

Public Citizen: Tell Congress: Stop Wasteful Corporate Spending
While the investment bank Lehman Brothers faced bankruptcy and asked the federal government for a bailout, it arranged to pay executives millions of dollars in bonuses. This is infuriating! Write a letter to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee using the easy form below, and tell lawmakers to continue monitoring the actions of Lehman Brothers, fully exposing the irresponsible spending that contributed to our current financial meltdown. Then, tell at least five of your friends to do the same!

Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA): Help launch the Women Protecting Wilderness campaign!
Women from all walks of life who love wild places — This fall, Women Protecting Wilderness will make its debut at a news conference announcing our campaign and unveiling a visually-exciting “wilderness quilt” of “testimonials” from women about why Utah’s wild land heritage is important to them. Please help us create the “wilderness quilt” by submitting your photo and 2-3 sentence statement about why wilderness matters to you.
