About

The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy news, action alerts, carnivals, events and resources. This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!

If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included below. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources below; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.

Action Alerts

Consumers Union: Frankenfood: This Halloween trick could be for real!
Goats that produce spider silk in their milk. Pigs with mouse DNA to improve their digestion. These animals aren’t freaks of nature–they’re created by man through genetic engineering. But the Food and Drug Administration wants to let the meat and milk from these animals be sold to you without your knowledge! FDA has said that each of these animals is different enough from the normal version that it has to go through a full safety assessment. But FDA has refused to require labeling, and says that the ethics of such changes cannot even be considered in its decisionmaking.

Consumers Union: Don’t block our right to know! [For Kansas residents only]
You helped beat back an effort by the big dairy producers last year that would give you less information about what’s in the milk you buy. But guess what? They’re at it again in Kansas! Some dairy farmers use an artificial growth hormone, now produced and sold by Eli Lilly (which recently bought it from Monsanto), to make cows produce more milk. But many retailers, as well as all organic dairies, sell milk products from cows that are not injected with this hormone. Right now, they tell you that on the label, so you can have a choice.

CREDO Action: Tell the Department of Justice: Investigate voter intimidation in New Mexico.
Here at CREDO, we’re paying close attention to potential voter suppression issues that could affect voters around the country. Today, we’re writing to let you know about a problem in New Mexico that could lead to voters being disenfranchised. The problem: Private investigators have been showing up at the doors of poor and Latino voters – asking them intimidating questions, insinuating that they don’t have the right to vote. Who’s affected: New Mexican voters in good standing who have every right to go vote on Election Day – but who may not show up at the polls if they’ve been frightened in their own homes.

DawnWatch: Today Show interview with Sea Shepherd’s Capt Paul Watson and Kim McCoy 10/30/08
On Thursday, October 30, Captain Paul Watson, and Executive Director of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Kim McCoy, were interviewed on NBC’s Today Show. If you aren’t familiar with the work of Sea Shepherd, you will get a treat learning about our movement’s heroes of the high seas when you watch The Today Show segment, or visit the Sea Shepherd Website at www.SeaShepherd.org, and, starting earlier November, when we watch the new Animal Planet series about their mission — Whale Wars. (More on that next week.)

Defenders of Wildlife: 11th-Hour Assault on Wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies!
With the clock running out on the Bush/Administration, federal officials have launched a final attempt to ram through a plan that could lead to the slaughter of as many as two-thirds of the Greater Yellowstone and Northern Rockies wolf population. Please fill out the form below to urge U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to go back to the drawing board and come up with a balanced and responsible management plan for our wolves. Comments will be collected by Defenders and submitted on your behalf.

Free Press: Tell the FCC: Open White Spaces for Everyone
This Halloween, the powerful lobbyists at the National Association of Broadcasters are trying to scare Washington with horror stories about “white spaces” — vacant TV channels that can be used to bring high-speed Internet connections to rural and low-income Americans across the country. The FCC must not buckle under the intense lobbying pressure. Fill out your information below to send the FCC this Halloween card and help build a better Internet for everyone.

Greenpeace: Tell Congress to support renewable energy treats, not dirty energy tricks
It is very likely that in the weeks following the election, Congress will reconvene and debate new legislation to help stimulate America’s sagging economy. Among the many policies being debated are new investments in clean, renewable energy that will not only help break our dependence on foreign oil and solve global warming, but also create tens of thousands of good new jobs. Unfortunately, allies of the coal and nuclear industry are trying to dress up as “clean energy sources” so they can get some of the candy for themselves. Take action now and email your representative today to urge them to support including investments in real clean energy solutions like wind and solar power in the economic stimulus package and to oppose wasteful handouts to polluters like the coal and nuclear industry.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Tell Katie Couric and CBS News You Didn’t Like “Mutton Bustin” Kids’ Rodeo Feature
On October 24, Katie Couric and the CBS Evening News did a feature called “Mutton Bustin” that promoted kids’ rodeos. Please send an e-mail to CBS News and Ms. Couric explaining your opposition to rodeos, especially those that teach children to be cruel to animals.

Rainforest Action Network (RAN): Tell the Dirty 20 to take a stand against rainforest destruction!
It’s time to show the worst companies that you won’t stand for the destruction of rainforests, communities or the climate for palm oil. The use of palm oil in soaps, cosmetics, food products and other consumer goods is a primary driver of human rights abuses, tropical deforestation, endangered species habitat destruction, and climate change.

United Farm Workers: Tell Retailers to Quit Ganging Up on Beef Northwest Workers
At Beef Northwest, even though the majority of workers have already voiced their support for a union, democracy takes a back seat. Despite casting their votes to form a union, employees continue to be denied a voice in the workplace. Companies like Whole Foods, New Seasons and Burgerville are trying to make sure these workers are silenced. These retailers are saying Beef Northwest gets to call the shots on their workers’ election. These companies–all non-union companies themselves–believe Beef Northwest workers’ only opportunity to form a union should come through a management-dominated union election process.

The Wilderness Society: Support Responsible Energy Corridor Development!
Make no mistake. The government’s plan for energy corridors will result in the construction of massive infrastructure in and around our wild lands, national parks and national monuments without helping create a clean energy future. Have a say in this issue by writing to the Department of Interior now.
