The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy news, action alerts, carnivals, events and resources. This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!
If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included below. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources below; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.
Action Alerts
Center for Biological Diversity: Stop Bush From Taking a Last Stab at Endangered Species
The National Environmental Policy Act is a safeguard that forces agencies to look before they leap, considering the environmental implications of federal projects. It guarantees that relevant information will be made available to the public that may play a role in both the decision-making process and the implementation of decisions. But the Bush administration, trying to hastily shove the regulation changes to the Endangered Species Act through before it leaves office, is disregarding the safeguards put in place — its new Environmental Assessment completely ignores the impact of climate change and pretends there are no alternatives to changing the Endangered Species Act.
DawnWatch: Grey’s Anatomy discusses animal experimentation beautifully — 10/30/08
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I caught up, on line, with last Thursday’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. (My job is so much easier than when I started DawnWatch nine years ago and had to rush to tape things!) I had heard the discussion of animal vivisection was balanced. And I had heard that while at first objecting to their killing, Cristina, the character played by Sandra Oh, finally agreed to kill the pigs she had used. What I hadn’t heard about was Christina’s transformation: She evolves from seeing the pigs only as bodies on which to learn, to animals whom she referred to by name and did not want to kill. And when I watched the show I learned that she agreed to kill them only because by that stage it would truly be euthanization — their injuries were so serious as to cause months of excruciating pain. Most importantly, until I saw the episode, I did not know how effectively a doctor’s choice to cause those injuries in the first place had been challenged.
Earthjustice: Tell EPA to Protect People from Perchlorate Contamination
Have you heard of perchlorate? It’s a by-product from the manufacture of rocket fuel, ammunition, and flares, and it could be in your drinking water. Despite the health threat, the Environmental Protection Agency has announced that it would not set limits for perchlorate or require clean-up of drinking water systems.
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Speak out to ensure a strong global warming plan for California
The California Air Resources Board will soon finalize a plan to reduce global warming pollution to 1990 levels by 2020. Tell the board to strengthen the proposed plan before it meets on November 20th.
The Wilderness Society: Keep Utah’s Canyon Lands Wild
The Bush Administration is rushing to finalize plans for a vast area of Utah to energy development and up to 17,000 miles of off road vehicle trails. Some of those trails lead directly into national parks, roadless areas, fragile wildlands and places where ancient Ancestral Puebloan ruins are vulnerable to looting and vandalism. Some members of Congress are attempting to stop this senseless move. Please ask your congressional member to take a strong stand for Utah’s wilderness.
Campaign Updates
Ecological Internet / The Rainforest Portal: Greenpeace Reaffirms Support for Ancient Forest Logging
Cursory review of FSC’s controversial certifications completely fails to question false premise that primary and old-growth forest logging is ever “well-managed”, instead calling for better training manuals for ancient forest destruction.

Fur Free Friday, November 28, 2008
Autumn is here, and “fashionistas” everywhere are buying, selling, or writing about fall wardrobes. Don’t forget an essential day in the fall “fashion season” – Fur Free Friday! Join us again this year as we urge shoppers to never buy fur, stores to stop selling fur, and media fashion writers to reveal the truth behind fur.
Amnesty International’s 2008 Global Write-a-thon, December 5 – 14, 2008
In the days surrounding International Human Rights Day on December 10, tens of thousands of caring people around the world will take part in the world’s largest letter writing event. Please join this worldwide effort. Be a part of the Global Write-a-thon. During last year’s Global Write-a-thon, people in more than 30 countries sent over 150,000 letters, postcards and emails on behalf of prisoners of conscience, human rights defenders, and others at risk. At least three of the prisoners were freed because of your support.
