Amnesty International: PRESIDENT-ELECT OBAMA: SHOW REAL LEADERSHIP IN HUMAN RIGHTS
Change will only come if we act: send a message to President-elect Obama to recommit America to human rights. Today we launch our 100 days campaign. Our goal is to make it clear that there can be no genuine renewal in America without a renewed commitment to human rights. During his first 100 days in office, Amnesty International is urging President-elect Obama to take three crucial actions: 1) announce a plan and date to close Guantánamo; 2) issue an executive order to ban torture and other ill-treatment, as defined under international law; 3) setup an independent commission to investigate abuses committed by the US government in its “war on terror”.
Change.gov: An American Moment: Your Vision
Start right now. Share your vision for what America can be, where President-Elect Obama should lead this country. Where should we start together?
DawnWatch: Financial Times on Prop 2 then on PETA 11/4- 11/8/08
Readers of the Financial might be delighted by some of the animal friendly coverage over the last week. On election day, the financial Times gave some positive coverage to California’s Prop 2 (I assume all know it passed) and this past weekend, the paper included a huge write-up on PETA’s Ingrid Newkirk.
DawnWatch: “Whale Wars” on Animal Planet tonight, Fri Nov 7 (Canada on Nov 9) 2008
“Whale Wars,” the new series that documents the campaign of Captain Paul Watson and his Sea Shepherd Conversation Society against Japanese whalers premieres tonight, November 7, on Animal Planet at 9pm! (Sunday the 9th, at 7pm in Canada.)
Earthjustice: Tell the Department of Energy: Prioritize Energy Efficiency!
During the presidential debates, President-elect Obama said energy policy will be a top priority of his administration. One of the most effective ways to cut energy costs, reduce our electricity consumption, and save us all money every month on our utility bills is to adopt the strongest energy efficiency standards for household appliances and commercial products. Energy efficiency is America’s first fuel, the fastest, cleanest and cheapest energy source.
In Defense of Animals (IDA): Tell The Obamas Our Nation’s “First Puppy” Must Be A Shelter Dog!
On November 6, Good Morning America (ABC) had a segment about what “kind” of dog the Obamas should get. There was a breeders’ representative who spoke about breeds, but the program never mentioned the option of adopting from a shelter. They also asked for viewer opinions on the kind of dog they should get. Click here to tell them that they should get a dog who needs a home from a shelter, rather than paying a breeder or pet store to breed yet another dog.
National Horse Protection League (NHPL): Pick the winning anti-AQHA phrase
Six days ago, we asked our supporters to suggest short phrases that conveyed their disgust with the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) for its support of horse slaughter. As you know, the AQHA — in large part because of its own active encouragement of over-breeding — has fought against laws that would ban horse slaughter in the United States and the export of horses for slaughter and eventual consumption. We were frankly overwhelmed by the number of imaginative and passionate responses, and have had a hard time settling on the best phrase ourselves. So we’re asking you to pick the winner!
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Fend off the Bush Administration’s 11th Hour Attacks
The Bush Administration is determined to ram through a new wolf-killing plan before leaving office. This dangerous scheme could allow the Northern Rockies states to kill nearly 1,000 gray wolves in the first year alone. Please submit an Official Citizen Comment telling the Interior Department to maintain strong federal protection for wolves.
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Save Patagonia
For two years NRDC, with assistance from our BioGems Defenders, has been fighting a massive hydroelectric scheme that would scar Chile’s pristine Patagonia region. Right now, Chilean government officials are under pressure to approve the environmental impact assessment (“EIA”) for the plan to construct five dams on two of the most beautiful wild rivers there: the Rio Baker and Rio Pascua. If built, the dams would flood thousands of acres of critical habitat for wildlife, including the endangered South American huemul. They would also require the construction of one of the world’s longest transmission lines, which would run 1,400 miles through protected natural areas and ancient forests….Urge Chilean officials to reject the environmental impact assessment for a massive hydroelectric scheme in Patagonia.
True Majority: Barack Won…. Now what?
What a week! Has it sunk in yet? In 70 days, President-elect Obama (!) will take office and kick off a new era. For the first time in over a decade, we’ll have a Democratic President, House and Senate. This is our chance to undo the damage of the past eight years and move America in a fundamentally new direction. That’s why your voice is so important. What are your top priorities for the new administration? Your decisions will inform our planning for the next seventy days and beyond, so please take a minute and vote.
We Can Solve It: To President-elect Obama: “I support bold action on climate change.”
Now’s not the time for small steps or a narrow focus. It’s time to go big. Our challenges are large and are deeply connected. As Al Gore has said, “We’re borrowing money from China to buy oil from the Persian Gulf to burn it in ways that destroy the planet. Every bit of that’s got to change.” With a bold plan, we can make that change in 10 years. In fact, only a bold plan will cut through the special interest politics in Washington and inspire the nation. Send a message of support to Barack Obama and his team, view our new ad, and check out the Repower America plan, detailed on our website.
The Wilderness Society: Shape Yellowstone’s Rules on Snowmobiles
Despite the recent court ruling telling the Park Service to bring snowmobile usage at Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks into check, the Park Service is proposing to allow 318 snowmobiles per day in Yellowstone National Park and 50 snowmobiles per day in Grand Teton National Park. Years of scientific monitoring by the Park Service, paid for with your tax dollars, has verified that declining snowmobile use improves air quality, solitude, and protection for the health of visitors, employees, and wildlife. Tell the Park Service to abide by the court’s ruling and phase-out snowmobiles in favor of snowcoaches, which provide a unique, safari-like experience through Yellowstone and Grand Teton.
The Wilderness Society: Tell your Senators to Support the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act!
This November, the Senate may take up the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act that would designate nearly two million acres of wilderness in eight states and create a new 26-million-acre national conservation system. This would be the largest expansion of wilderness in a decade, providing permanent protection for spectacular landscapes. Ensure the Senate acts by contacting your Senators and ask them to support the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act.

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM): Idaho State Ends Its Dog Lab Thanks to You
Just seven days after PCRM launched its public effort to end the use of live dogs from a local animal shelter for Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) training at Idaho State University (ISU), the school announced it would end the practice! We couldn’t have done it without your calls, e-mails, and letters to the school’s president.
United Poultry Concerns (UPC): United Poultry Concerns Pokes Claim that Animals Can’t Have Rights
In “Animals not calling for rights,” Nov. 3, 2008, New Haven Register (Conn.) Science Editor Abram Katz ridiculed California’s Proposition 2, designed to give egg-laying hens, pregnant sows and baby calves a degree of required confinement space as of 2015. Katz said the law (which passed by 63% of the vote on Nov. 4) is illogical because only humans can conceive of and exercise rights and unfair because laws protecting animals limit the human right to use and make money off animals. UPC president Karen Davis responded.
