Audubon: Sign the Petition to Help Protect America’s Wetlands!
Our nation’s wetlands, streams and other waters have a tremendous impact on everyone’s lives. But development and draining of these areas result in the loss of an average of 80,000 acres of wetlands each year. Wetlands provide all these things and more. Tell the new President we need to protect these areas for our future. Sign the petition today!
Center for Biological Diversity: Save the Wolves of the Rockies From Slaughter
After losing twice in court, the lame-duck Bush administration is taking a last shot at endangered wolves — moving, in the waning hours of its power, to strip them of protection all across Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and parts of Oregon, Washington, and Utah. If finalized, the removal of endangered species protection could result in the killing of 1,000 wolves in 2009 alone.
DawnWatch: Wall Street Journal and Fox TV on fake turkeys and vegan diets 11/13/08
How wonderful to open up today’s Wall Street Journal, one of the world’s biggest papers, and to see an article on turkey substitutes for Thanksgiving. (Thanks to Sean McVity for pointing us to it.) It came out the same morning that an extraordinary piece about diet aired on Houston’s Fox TV. I will start with the Fox piece, just in case anybody thinks they like turkey meat more than turkeys, and is wondering why they would look at the Wall Street Journal piece about fake Thanksgiving birds.
Farm Sanctuary: Ask McDonald’s to take a Stand Against Cloning Cruelty
Two out of three Americans are uncomfortable with the concept of cloned animals, and major stores such as Kroger, Safeway and Whole Foods have already come out against it, stating that they will not sell cloned animal products in their stores. And while fast food giant McDonald’s has reported that it wants to take the lead in advancing animal welfare practices—they have not yet taken a stand against cloning. This is the very least this company can do. Please encourage them to take a strong stand against the cruelty of cloning and to reject any type of cloned animal products.
Farm Sanctuary: Speak out Against the Genetic Engineering of Farm Animals
Please submit comments to the FDA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which is also soliciting public input on GE animals, before November 18, 2008. Ask them to takes steps to keep GE animals out of the food supply, and tell them that there should be a public discussion on animal welfare and the ethics of genetic engineering. You can submit the same comments to both agencies.
Farm Sanctuary: Ask Pres. Bush to send the pardoned turkeys to Farm Sanctuary.
Farm Sanctuary is asking that the President take one further step by not just making the annual pardoning a press opportunity. Instead, we are urging President Bush to ensure that this year’s National Thanksgiving Turkey and alternate are given a better life by sending them to Farm Sanctuary where they will get the best possible attention and care, and can truly live out their lives in peace.
Humane Society of the United States (HSUS): Urge President-elect Obama to support animal protection
President-elect Barack Obama is working to fill key positions in his administration, among them the Secretary of Agriculture. The Secretary of Agriculture has a tremendous impact on the treatment of animals and the enforcement of a broad range of laws—including those covering puppy mills, humane slaughter, animal fighting, and food safety. Please urge President-elect Barack Obama to appoint a Secretary of Agriculture who takes animal protection and consumer issues as seriously as issues confronting farm producers.
In Defense of Animals (IDA): Tell Congress To Stop Funding Nicotine And Tobacco Experiments On Animals
Please contact these members of the House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies. Ask that Congress end the decades-long policy of funding nicotine experiments on animals and instead redirect funds towards prevention, education and smoking cessation programs. Please keep all correspondence polite.
In Defense of Animals (IDA): Tell Katie Couric and CBS News You Didn’t Like “Mutton Bustin” Kids’ Rodeo Feature
On October 24, Katie Couric and the CBS Evening News did a feature called “Mutton Bustin” that promoted kids’ rodeos. Please send an e-mail to CBS News and Ms. Couric explaining your opposition to rodeos, especially those that teach children to be cruel to animals.
In Defense of Animals (IDA): Urge Dubai Hotel To Free Shark
The Atlantis Hotel, the newest and largest resort in the nation of Dubai, is holding a whale shark captive in its aquarium. The hotel, on the exclusive Palm Jumeirah island, originally said it had “rescued” the animal, who is a member of an endangered species. The hotel is now refusing to say if or when the whale shark will be released. Environmentalists and Dubai residents are demanding that the shark should be released into his natural habitat.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urge Graham-Kapowsin High School to Cancel Cruel ‘Donkey Basketball’ Game
In Graham, Washington, a “donkey basketball” fundraiser is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 22. Please urge Graham-Kapowsin High School to cancel the donkey basketball game immediately and replace it with an event in which all participants choose to be involved. School officials have no reason to endorse such suffering and abuse, especially when PETA has provided them with fun, cruelty-free alternatives.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urge Columbia University Facilities to Stop Using Glue Traps
Columbia University students in New York are upset that Columbia’s Facilities Department is using glue traps to catch and kill rodents on campus. Although officials there have told PETA that they will explore humane rodent-control alternatives, they are not responding to our repeated requests that they remove all glue traps currently set out.

United Farm Workers (UFW): Stop Bush Admin. From Gutting Farm Worker Protections
We expect the Bush administration’s Department of Labor to shortly announce new guestworker (H2A) regulations. These regulations, if adopted, will gut existing protections for both domestic and foreign farmworkers and represent a huge step backwards in protecting the hardworking people who put the food on our table. The regulations will lower farmworker wages, make it easier for local workers to be discriminated against in hiring, and harder for farm workers to obtain decent housing.

Democracy for America (DFA): If you were President-elect Obama
Democracy for America wants to know: If you were President-elect Obama, who would you choose to head four important cabinet positions in your new administration? And to keep it interesting, we also want to know who you think Obama will pick. We will send DFA t-shirts to 10 people who correctly pick Obama’s choices.
