Alaska Wilderness League: Time for change. Act now!
Our shared lands in Alaska are priceless American treasures infinitely more valuable than their potential for industrial exploitation. We all have a duty as stewards of our shared lands to protect the Alaskan wilderness. Many in Washington think this basic tenet of American civic life, so obvious to us, has been eliminated if it ever existed at all. We will prove them wrong.

Listed below are the addresses and telephone numbers of the Los Angeles County Fire Department Headquarters, Riverside County District Attorney’s Office, and Riverside County Sheriff’s Office. Please call or write to these officials to demand accountability and justice for this felony to the fullest extent allowed by law.
National Horse Protection Action Fund: Tell the American Quarter Horse Association to oppose horse slaughter!
This week in Oklahoma City, the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) wraps up its three-week World Show. The National Horse Protection League (NHPL), which is dedicated to eliminating horse slaughter, is using this occasion to highlight an unseemly side of AQHA. For too long, AQHA has encouraged the over-breeding of horses, which has, in turn, contributed to the market for horse slaughter. Worse, they have lobbied against legislation that would ban slaughter and the export of horses for eventual human consumption. AQHA leadership needs to search its soul to determine whether it sees horses as noble living creatures deserving of love and respect or simply as profit generators that can be sold for human consumption once they serve no profitable purpose.
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Help keep toxic air pollution out of northwest Colorado
The Bush administration wants to sacrifice more than one million acres in northwest Colorado to destructive oil and gas drilling and off-road vehicle use, but the proposal does not adequately address local air pollution concerns. Comments are due November 24th, so send yours today.
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Tell the EPA to act now to help stop global warming
The EPA is requesting public comments on whether carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping pollutants are endangering our health and our climate. Tell the EPA global warming pollution is dangerous and demand that the agency set tough new standards to reduce emissions from cars, trucks and power plants.
Ocean Conservancy: Sign Our Letter to Help Protect Hawaiian Monk Seals
The Hawaiian monk seal has called the Hawaiian Island chain its home for millions of years but the population of this magnificent marine animal is falling. It’s up to us to protect the places this animal calls home and hunts for food if it’s going to have a fighting chance and vibrant future. Please sign our letter urging the National Marine Fisheries Service to expand the critical habitat of the monk seal so it includes the main Hawaiian Islands.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Ask the San Antonio Zoo to Rescue Annie Sue!
When pop star Michael Jackson recently faced financial trouble, many of the animals at his famed Neverland Ranch, including four giraffes, were purchased by a couple in Page, Arizona, who intended to open a zoo. But at least one year after acquiring the animals, the giraffes remain in an inadequate “temporary” enclosure. One of the giraffes, named Annie Sue, was born at the San Antonio Zoo in June of 1998 and, at just one year of age, was transferred to Michael Jackson. During her time at Neverland, Annie Sue had two babies, Rambo and JJ, both of whom are with her now in Page.
Petfinder: Urge Obama to Adopt
President-elect Barack Obama has said he’d like to adopt a shelter dog, but that he’s worried about his daughter Malia’s allergies. We’re here to help!
Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM): DO YOU OR ANY OF YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS, FRIENDS, OR PATIENTS OWN STOCK IN GENERAL MOTORS?
As you may know, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is working on a campaign to require prominent companies to implement meaningful written policies designed to maximize donations to charities that promote human health, while avoiding unnecessary cruelty to animals. Many companies spend enormous sums to fund charities that engage in cruel and unscientific animal experiments. PCRM wants to end this wasteful spending. We are in the process of filing several shareholder resolutions, which request the adoption and enforcement of the above policies. However, we are in need of additional persons owning GM stock to support that shareholder proposal.
Public Citizen: No More Taxpayer Bailouts!
In September, Warren Buffett bailed out Constellation Energy for $4.7 billion. In purchasing Constellation, Buffett has inherited a partnership with French government-owned, Electricite de France. The 50-50 partnership, known as UniStar, will be building four new nuclear reactors in four states that will cost nearly $10 billion each!! AND, UniStar wants to pay for them with loan guarantees subsidized by U.S. taxpayers. Under the company’s plan, outlined at Maryland Public Service Commission hearings in July, U.S. taxpayers could be at risk for 80 percent of the cost of the reactors.
Save Our Environment.org: It’s time to Repower, Refuel, and Rebuild America
We look to new leaders in Washington to invest in clean energy – like wind and solar – to get America moving forward and put Americans back to work. These investments will create millions of good-paying jobs in the hardest-hit construction and manufacturing sectors and create pathways out of poverty for the most affected communities. Fill out the form below to call on President-elect Obama and the 111th Congress to produce a plan to Repower, Refuel and Rebuild America.
Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS): EPA Rule Making Will Set the Climate for 2009
In 2007 the Supreme Court found that carbon dioxide—one of the main contributors to global warming—qualifies as a pollutant that can be regulated under the federal Clean Air Act. In response, staff scientists and policy experts at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) drafted a preliminary plan to tackle this urgent issue. Unfortunately, in an attempt to further delay action to rein in global warming, EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson undercut his own staff, bashing their laudable efforts in an added introduction. Implementing this plan will ultimately be in the hands of the next administration, which makes this a tremendous opportunity to demonstrate public support for making climate change and protecting the work of government scientists a priority come January 2009.
