Action Alerts

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): Send a message to President Bush telling him you oppose preemptive pardons for torture.
There’s a real risk that President Bush may issue pardons to a number of high-ranking Administration officials for any activities related to torture, extraordinary rendition and other abuses. That’s right. Even before they’re charged with a crime, Bush has the power to prevent any criminal investigation into the activities of Cheney, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, Gonzales and others whose behavior raises serious questions. Send a message to President Bush telling him you oppose preemptive pardons for torture.

Born Free USA: Ask President-elect Obama to Make Right Choice
Born Free USA united with API is awaiting the imminent announcement by President-elect Barack Obama of who will fill two positions in his Administration with enormous influence over animal protection in America and abroad: the Secretary of Agriculture and the Secretary of the Interior. These two members of President Obama’s Cabinet will have a tremendous impact on the treatment of animals and the enforcement of a broad range of laws including oversight of the Animal Welfare Act, Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, Wild Bird Conservation Act, Endangered Species Act, and many other vital wildlife-related laws.

National Wildlife Foundation (NWF): Sign the ‘No Child Left Inside’ Petition
Thanks to all of your efforts, this year children and teachers won a big victory when the U.S. House passed the No Child Left Inside Act of 2008. Now it’s time to ensure that the progress made by this year’s victory gets carried into the new Congress and administration.

Nuclear Age Peace Foundation: Send President-elect Obama a 100-Day Agenda for Nuclear Disarmament
The incoming Obama administration has an historic opportunity to lead the world to complete nuclear disarmament, and all of us have the responsibility to make sure they stay on track. President-elect Obama has stated, “A world without nuclear weapons is profoundly in America’s interest and the world’s interest. It is our responsibility to make the commitment, and to do the hard work to make this vision a reality.”

On Day One: Be the Change: Vote Now! (Round 1: 13 Days)
November’s election was all about change. Now, the moment of change is upon us—and it’s time to put the idea of change into action. Today, the On Day One contest begins. Help us set the agenda for President-elect Obama by voting for the ideas you think he should tackle On Day One of his term.

PETA2: Food: Tell Us What You Love!
It’s time for peta2′s 3rd annual Libby Awards nominations, and we need your help! There are so many amazing animal-friendly products out there these days that we just can’t keep track of them all. Throughout the month, peta2 staffers will be blogging about all the different categories and asking for your suggestions, so tell us what you can’t get enough of! Voting will begin in January, so keep an eye out to see if your suggestions made it.

The Wilderness Society: Tell the Forest Service – Restore bighorn populations!
It has been estimated that Idaho once was home to tens of thousands of bighorns. Now, there are only an estimated 2000 bighorns statewide. The only way to ensure recovery of bighorn sheep in Idaho is to stop contact between bighorns and domestic sheep that carry diseases that have ravaged bighorn populations. Please tell the Forest Service that you support their efforts to provide disease-free habitat for bighorn sheep in Idaho’s Hells Canyon and the Salmon River canyon.

The Wilderness Society: Protect Alaska’s Coastal Waters from Oil Spills
Bristol Bay is one of the most productive marine ecosystems in the world. It is the site of the world’s largest wild sockeye salmon runs, and important nursery grounds for king crab and Pacific halibut. Indeed, all of Bristol Bay’s marine life is at risk from potential oil drilling and the environmental impacts that come with such development. The federal government admits that at least one large oil spill is likely to occur should offshore operations begin in Bristol Bay. Such a spill could result in the same devastation Alaska experienced with the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989. Tell your representatives in Congress to co-sponsor the Bristol Bay Protection Act and permanently protect Bristol Bay from offshore oil and gas leasing and development.
