Animal Person: On the NYC Humane Education Resolution and “Radical Moves”
There will be a vote and conference about the Humane Education resolution by the NYC Council on Dec. 16th. There is a law that “requires instruction on the humane care and treatment of animals, [but it] is unknown to most educators.” Resolution 497 would help schools comply and hopefully bring funding.

Communities for Clean Ports: Don’t Let the Bush Administration Roll Back Crucial Policies
The Clean Trucks Program at the Port of Los Angeles, which began on October 1st 2008 is one of the most innovative, sweeping clean-air and anti-global warming models in our nation. Now, the Bush Administration, in its final days in office, is blocking the Clean Trucks Program and is once again placing special interests above public interest. Please tell your Congressional representatives to take a stand for public health, a green economy, and the environment by telling the Bush Administration to leave the Clean Trucks Program alone.

DawnWatch: Factory farm pollution is major news all week 11/29 — 12/5/08
This year, with the push to pass California’s groundbreaking Proposition 2, there has been much focus, in the animal advocacy world and in the media, on the treatment of animals on factory farms. This past week, there has been a heavy media focus on what factory farms, and the livestock industry in general, do to our environment.

National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA): Short-sighted Energy Development puts Parks in Danger.
The Bureau of Land Management has launched a sneak attack against the national parks in Utah. Without consulting the National Park Service, BLM has opened thousands of acres to energy development near or directly adjacent to Arches, Canyonlands National Parks and Dinosaur National Monument. This development would forever change the landscape of these iconic western parks while increasing pollution. The front steps of our national parks are no place for energy development. Write Kempthorne TODAY and urge him to put a stop to the BLM land sale!

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urge Britney Spears to Give Exotic Animals a Break
Prior to the release of Britney Spears’s music video “Circus,” in which elephants and lions are forced to perform humiliating and unnatural tricks, PETA fired off a letter to her manager urging her to leave animals out of her videos and live performances. Since this isn’t the first time that Britney Spears has exploited exotic animals to promote herself, we must urge her to stop supporting an industry based on cruelty and violence to animals.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Ask Obama for Policy to Reduce Animal Suffering
With a historic election behind us, PETA is hoping that President-elect Barack Obama is looking toward the future and considering ways to make animal welfare a part of the “21st century government” that he has promised to create. We have a few suggestions about where his administration can start: with our nation’s food policy as well as the way that our nation deals with risks from toxic chemicals. Please join us in asking President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team to create two interagency councils to direct programs on our food and toxicology policy. The formation of a National Food Policy Council and a National Toxicology Council will reduce waste, protect human health and the environment, reduce animal suffering, and save money.
