The young female pit bull dragged behind a pickup truck into SEAACA’s parking lot on December 4 is recovering from her injuries…When she’s ready, her new forever home will be carefully chosen. In celebration of the new life before her, SEAACA staff has given the year-old dog formerly called Prada a fresh, more fitting name: Bluebell.

=====================
Dear Deputy District Attorney Knaan,
Please seek the maximum punishment allowed by law for a Norfolk, California woman accused of dragging her pit bull, Prada, behind her pick-up truck on December 4, 2008.
Apparently, she’d loaded the one-year-old dog with mange into her truck bed — a prohibited form of transport in California — to relinquish him at Southeast Area Animal Control Authority (SEAACA) in Downey for euthanasia.
Mange is entirely curable and perhaps Prada sensed her fate when she jumped from the moving vehicle. In any case, the 25-year-old woman, charged with illegally transporting a dog and felony animal cruelty, kept driving.
She didn’t slow down, even as a driver behind her saw the leashed dog thrash and scream against the pavement for blocks. The horrified witness trailed her into the SEAACA parking lot where animal control officers quickly intervened to save the bloody, unconscious dog.
Capt. Aaron Reyes, SEAACA director of operations, stated “Prada lost consciousness from pain or being choked by the collar.”
I understand the woman has been served notice to appear in Los Angeles Superior Court in March. I urge the District Attorney’s Office to seek restitution for Prada’s veterinary bills, along with jail time for animal cruelty, a felony, and loose transport in an open truck bed, a misdemeanor.
If convicted, please ensure Prada’s abuser undergoes psychological counseling and is barred from possessing or living with animals.
Mental health professionals and criminologists view animal abuse as an overt clue to antisocial behavior. They describe the intensity of violent behavior (regardless of the victim’s identity) as a precursor to future violence. Animal cruelty is a key trait in the American Psychiatric Association’s profile for conduct disorders and the FBI identifies animal abuse as an early stage along the violence continuum.
Thank you for recognizing the gravity of this crime and prosecuting Prada’s abuser to the fullest degree.
Sincerely,

UPDATE ON PRADA, RENAMED BLUEBELL
=====================
Jim Willis, World Animal Day Ambassador USA-East, tiergartenjim [at] yahoo.com — Prada is being treated at SEACCA’s Animal Care Center for mange, pain and infection. She’s expected to make a full recovery.
Donations for her care should be made payable to:
SEAACA (ATTN: Prada Care Fund)
9777 SEAACA Street; Downey, CA 90241
Southeast Area Animal Control Authority
www.seaaca.org/aboutseaaca.htm
SEAACA appreciates all offers from other rescues to take Prada, but after she recovers, they would like her to be adopted by a local family. Contact the shelter to apply for adoption (and if Prada is no longer available, many other wonderful dogs will be). Prada will not have to be held as evidence because investigators have sufficient photographic proof of her injuries.

This poor animal needs some help after what it’s been through. It’s a real tradegy that should never happen to a living soul.
