Ecological Internet: Bolivia’s Amazon Riches to Be Plundered for Oil
“President Morales must be encouraged to live up to his grand rhetoric, and end his government’s hurried measures to decimate massive indigenous rainforest protected areas and their biodiversity and climate values, in a manner eerily reminiscent of the capitalistic system against which he rallies.”
League of Conservation Voters (LCV): Repower, Refuel, and Rebuild America
“After years of inaction from the Bush Administration, we finally have an opportunity to break our addiction to oil and work for a clean energy future. That is why LCV launched a petition to send to President-elect Obama to ask him to support critical energy priorities in his first 100 days.”
National Wildlife Federation (NWF): Help Restore the Endangered Species Act
“After eight years of overt hostility toward the Endangered Species Act, during its last few days in office, the current administration has now made its final attacks against one of America’s most important conservation laws. This year’s Congress can still take action during its last days in office to empower the new administration to overturn these rollbacks.”
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urge Urban Outfitters to Ditch Fur
“PETA recently learned that Urban Outfitters is selling real fur, and while the fur appears to be vintage, selling any fur promotes the idea that it is OK to wear the skin of an animal who was trapped, beaten, drowned, anally or vaginally electrocuted, or even skinned alive for clothing. We need you to tell Urban Outfitters that sending this message is not acceptable.”
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Tell Fort Sam Houston to Stop Cutting Off Living Goats’ Limbs!
“PETA has received shocking information that medics at Fort Sam Houston are being forced to break and amputate the legs of living goats, cut their veins, wound their chests, and artificially clot their injuries. Nearly 990 goats are reportedly used every year at the Army base. The Department of Defense’s (DoD) animal welfare regulation requires that animals be replaced with available non-animal trauma training methods. Numerous proven non-animal training methods exist, including the DoD’s Combat Trauma Patient Simulator, rotations in trauma hospitals, medical manikins, computerized surgical task trainers, and Dr. Emad Aboud’s “living” perfused human cadaver model.”
Campaign Updates
Farm Sanctuary / Gene Baur: USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack – A mixed bag
“Farm Sanctuary is concerned about this appointment, but we are hopeful that we may see change during this administration that will benefit animals, the environment and rural communities. Vilsack has an uneven track record when it comes to farm animals and fighting factory farming. He has supported some animal protection measures and has at times stood up to Big Ag, yet he has also taken actions that are not in the best interest of farm animals or rural communities. During his tenure as governor of Iowa, the state saw a proliferation of massive hog farms, and we saw these hog farms first-hand this summer when we rescued pigs from the flooding in southeastern Iowa. How he will shape the USDA in support of Obama’s mantra of change is something Farm Sanctuary will be watching closely.”

In Defense of Animals (IDA): The 1st Annual Nationwide “Adopt, Don’t Shop!” Day, December 20, 2008
“The Saturday before Christmas is the biggest puppy-buying day of the year. This year, In Defense of Animals is teaming up with activists in dozens of cities around the country to educate the public about the horrors of pet factories (puppy mills) and encourage people to adopt a homeless animal from a shelter or rescue group instead of buying one from a pet store.” (See also: Adopt, Don’t Shop @ Vegan Soapbox for additional ideas for activism.)
Born Free USA: National Bird Day, January 5, 2009
“Born Free USA united with Animal Protection Institute in coordination with the Avian Welfare Coalition (AWC) is calling on activists around the U.S. to take action on behalf of captive birds by drawing attention to the exploitation of other countries’ native birds by the U.S. pet industry on January 5 — National Bird Day.”
