Animal Person: Targeting This Year’s Iditarod Supporters
“Ah yes, it’s that time again: When I post (–this time link to) a list of Iditarod supporters and then spend the next couple of days fielding e-mails from representatives of a few of them who claim they are not indeed supporters of the brutal “race” after they have seen how angry the public is that they are indeed supporters. (Last year, one insisted zero support, however, but the connection was there nonetheless.)”
Amnesty International: Tell Congress to help humanitarian workers get into Gaza and to suspend all transfers of weapons to Israel
“20 days into the Gaza crisis and the humanitarian crisis there gets worse each day. 398 women and children are dead, another 4700 injured, 750,000 lack access to water and one million are without electricity. Each day that passes guarantees more innocent civilians will suffer. Tell Congress to act swiftly to help humanitarian workers get into Gaza and to suspend all transfers of weapons to Israel.”
Audubon: Sign the Petition to Repower, Refuel, and Rebuild America
“President-Elect Obama has made it clear that global warming, energy, and green jobs are at the top of his list. In his own words, “Now is the time to confront this challenge once and for all. Delay is no longer an option. Denial is no longer an acceptable response. The stakes are too high. The consequences, too serious.” But as he often said during the campaign, the change we all desire cannot be his responsibility alone. We all must help. Let President-Elect Obama know that you stand with him on efforts to address global warming.”
Free Press: No Bailout for AT&T, Comcast and Verizon
“President-elect Barack Obama’s plan to connect more Americans to an open and affordable Internet is under siege by phone and cable lobbyists who seek to turn our economic stimulus into a blank check written with no strings attached. Tell Congress: Don’t bail out phone and cable companies. Build out a better Internet for everyone.”
Greenpeace: Join the Energy [R]evolution!
“The new American revolution begins with YOU. There’s no side to take, and no bystanders – we must all stand together and rise up against the tide of global warming. This is the greatest fight of our lives. The very planet depends on it. Join the Energy [R]evolution now.”
Greenpeace UK: A third runway makes no sense
“It’s decision day on Heathrow – and Gordon Brown is saying yes to a climate-wrecking third runway. It’s time to send a message to him that this runway can not and will not be built. [...] Write to Gordon Brown and tell him what you think about this utterly insane decision. We’d like you to write your own letter as it will be more effective than sending the same one as everyone else, but there are some ideas for what to include below. The letter will also be copied to your MP. (If you live outside the UK, you can also send a message to Gordon Brown.)”
Human Rights First: Ask Producers of ‘24′ to Stop Promoting Torture
“The hit television series “24″ is notorious for how its hero Jack Bauer gets the job done: he tortures suspects, gets what he wants, and always saves the day. Of course, that’s rarely how things work in real life. But disturbingly, Human Rights First – working with military educators – has learned that young soldiers have often copied Jack Bauer’s actions in the field or even view him as a model of how to conduct interrogations. The writers and producers of ‘24′ have the freedom to create what they think will appeal to viewers. But we also think they should be aware of the show’s impact.”
Humane Society of the United States (HSUS): Urge Congress to Pass the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act
“The Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act (H.R. 503) will prohibit the barbaric slaughter of American horses for human consumption, including the transport of horses to Mexico and Canada for this purpose. Click here to see if your U.S. Representative is already a co-sponsor of this legislation. If they are not, please call to urge your Representative to co-sponsor H.R. 503, The Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, to end the slaughter of American horses for human consumption and prohibit their export for slaughter in other countries.”
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Tell the Tennessee Valley Authority to pay health costs for victims of its coal ash spill
“A massive spill at the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Kingston Fossil Plant recently flooded more than 400 acres in Roane County, Tennessee, with one billion gallons of toxic coal ash sludge. Urge the TVA to make funds available so that residents in the affected area can get independent, third-party medical testing and health services free of charge.”
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Help Cats Used for Cruel Training at St. Louis Children’s Hospital
“St. Louis Children’s Hospital still uses cats for intubation training exercises in its Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course, despite its inherent cruelty and the availability of mannequins and advanced simulators that have proved to be superior to the use of animals. During the exercises, cats have plastic tubes repeatedly forced down their tracheas, which can cause bleeding, swelling, pain, possible scarring, collapsed lungs, and even death. [...] Please contact PALS Program Coordinator Marcia Putnam and Course Faculty Director Joseph Gunn, and urge them to replace the use of animals in the course (which will be offered next from February 20 to 21) with one of the many effective, non-animal training methods available. ”
PETA India: Urge Maharashtra to Save the Leopards
“Recently, leopard deaths have dominated the headlines as villages across the country have resorted to inhumane and deadly techniques to solve conflicts between humans and other animals. Each year, an increasing number of leopards and other animals are killed because of human encroachment on animals’ natural habitats. [...] Please use the form below to send an e-mail to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests asking him to initiate measures to curb the number of conflicts between leopards and humans.”
Physicians for Free Choice and Health (PRCH): Restore Affordable Birth Control
“For decades, health centers on college campuses and some family planning clinics serving low-income populations were eligible for deep discounts from pharmaceutical companies, allowing college students and low-income women to purchase prescription birth control at lower prices. However, legislation passed in 2005 had the unintended consequence of removing this discount, causing a sharp and immediate increase in the cost of birth control for women served by these health centers. Congress did not act on this price hike last year—let’s make sure the new faces in Washington take action and restore affordable birth control!”
The Wilderness Society: Tell Congress to Make Green Jobs a Stimulus Priority
“Within days, Congress will turn its attention to a far-reaching stimulus plan designed to create new jobs for out-of-work Americans and put the economy back on track. We need your help in calling attention to an historic opportunity – the opportunity to create jobs and help our treasured public lands at the same time. Please ask Congress to include a program of green jobs to restore public lands in the upcoming economic recovery package. Such a program will not only create new jobs for tens of thousands of Americans, but also will pay dividends for generations to come by restoring the lands that belong to us all.”
