Action Alerts

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): Tell President Obama, “Thank you!”
“Within hours of taking office, President Obama took the important first step to close Guantánamo: halting the unconstitutional military commissions by ordering the prosecution to seek a 120-day suspension. It’s the first step in what we hope will be a series of bold measures to free America from the civil liberties outrages and human rights abuses of the Bush era. Let’s match President Obama’s first step forward with a powerful show of support and encouragement.”

Animal Person: Help Produce a Movie With $1, and One Other Thing
“Today the first fan-managed, motion picture studio, Green Light Flix announced that it is inviting vegetarians, vegans, animal rights activists, and environmentalists to donate at least $1.00 to help finance eco-friendly feature films & educational videos. [...] All projects are financed by individual and corporate donors. Once productions are completed they will be made available for free on-line, and Limited Edition DVDs will be mailed to anyone who donates more than $25.00. Profits will finance future productions and will also be donated to animal rescue, rights, rescue, and welfare organizations selected by its Board of Advisors and Donor Members.”

Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR): Tell President Obama: Close Guantanamo Now
“According to news reports, President Obama is circulating a draft executive order to close the offshore prison camp at Guantánamo Bay. It is seven years long past time to close Guantánamo, and President Obama must take decisive action to ensure that it happens swiftly. For seven years, the men at Guantánamo have suffered in horrendous conditions from an arbitrary detention regime, kept from their families, homes and communities with little to no legal process or hope to secure justice.”

Earthjustice: Welcome, President Obama…Now Let’s Get Started
“As we celebrate today’s historic inauguration of Barack Obama, let us take to heart his stirring call to action and ready ourselves to support his promising environmental agenda. But first, we must help Obama counter the environmental havoc caused by ex-president Bush, especially in the waning moments of his administration. Join with us to help President Obama make a clean, swift break from these policies.”

Kinship Circle: Man Who Filed Dog’s Teeth To Gumline Belongs In Jail
“A McMinnville, Tenn. jury found Chris Barnett guilty of animal cruelty for filing down the dog’s teeth last year… Barnett faces up to a year in jail when he’s sentenced.” Please write to Judge Stanley, Ms. Lisa Zavogiannis, and Government Officials of Warren County, McMinnville, and the State of Tennessee to urge that Christopher Barnett receive the maximum felony penalty.

Kinship Circle: Unnecessary – Live Dogs Cut Open To Train Med Students
“Two decades ago, medical schools let students practice emergency procedures on dogs. Today, the University of Michigan is among a small number of institutions that still use old-fashioned animal labs. More than 90% of Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) classes taught in the U.S. and Canada benefit from human-focused simulators alone. Dogs, goats and pigs just aren’t effective teachers any more.”

Pathfinder International: Sign Petition [to Obama] to Support International Reproductive Health
“As of January 20, the United States has a new Administration and Congress, which means you have a new opportunity to make your voice heard. Join the more than 1,700 who have already signed! Show your support for international family planning and reproductive health by telling President Obama and the 111th Congress that you want these programs to be a critical component of US foreign assistance. [...] We, the undersigned, support women’s health and rights around the world and call on the Obama Administration and 111th Congress to restore the US to its position of leadership in international reproductive health and family planning.”

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Help Stop a Cruel ‘Donkey Basketball’ Game in Indiana
“At Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers, Indiana, a “donkey basketball” fundraiser is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 31. Donkeys used in these rough and abusive “games” are often denied proper exercise as they travel for months at a time in small, poorly ventilated enclosures. They are regularly forced to go without food and water before games in an effort to prevent unsightly “accidents.” [...] Please e-mail school officials. Urge them to cancel the donkey basketball game immediately and replace it with an event in which all participants can choose whether to be involved.”

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Help Animals, the Hungry, the Planet, and Yourself by Taking the New Year’s Pledge to Be Veg!
Every year, more than 15 billion animals are slaughtered for food in the U.S. alone. Each of those billions of individual animals is denied everything that is natural and important to them: the space to take a few steps, love, safety from fear and pain, companionship, the joy of being able to nuzzle their young, and often even protection from the cold. That’s billions of feeling beings who die frightening, painful, and often violent deaths so that they can be thrown into a bucket or a box or onto a sandwich. In 2009, will you please consider the suffering of each of the animals killed for food and pledge to try a vegetarian diet for just 30 days? For every person who signs the Pledge to Be Veg for 30 Days through the end of January 2009, PETA will make a donation to a program to plant fruit trees in an impoverished village where people go hungry every day.”

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urge the NFL to Test Michael Vick for a Psychopathic Brain Disorder
“Following the release of a new USDA report on Michael Vick’s dogfighting activities—and an ominous silence from Vick’s attorneys, sports manager, and public relations representatives when we brought it to their attention—PETA has sent a letter to the NFL calling for Vick to undergo brain-scanning procedures that were recently developed. The USDA revelation that Vick enjoyed placing family pets in the ring with fighting pit bulls is among the factors that concern PETA, and lying outright to the NFL and on his lie-detector exam fits the American Psychiatric Association profile for serious antisocial personality disorder (APD).”

The Sierra Club: Protect our Roadless Areas
“For more than a hundred years Americans have protected our national forests for future generations. These forests provide valuable habitat for fish and wildlife, clean drinking water and unparalleled outdoor recreation opportunities for all to enjoy. Urge Obama to continue his support for roadless areas by protecting our national forests, including the roadless areas of Alaska’s Tongass National Forest.”

United Farm Workers (UFW): Bush’s devastating new H2A regs still in effect. Tell Congress to override now.
“Change has started. Upon taking office President Obama immediately stayed any pending or new 11th hour regulations that the Bush administration tried to push through. However, this does not include the devastating new H2A regulations we wrote to you about. These regulations were not included as they already went into effect on Saturday and the only way they can be stopped through a congressional override that President Obama can then sign into law.”

Campaign Updates

Change.org: Winners of the Ideas for Change in America Competition
“After 656,991 votes for 7,847 ideas, we present the top 10 ideas for change (in no particular order). Over the next week we will be working with nonprofit sponsors for each idea, including 1Sky, Healthcare-NOW!, and The Peace Alliance, to craft national campaigns around each idea. In the meantime, we have opened discussion for how to most effectively turn each idea into a successful national campaign, and would love your suggestions. We also want to recognize the additional 25 ideas that received over 2500 votes, each of which attracted an impressive community. We are excited to be able to support these and other ideas as well over the next year as we build out a broader platform for individuals and organizations to promote the changes they seek.”

Ecological Internet / The Rainforest Portal: VICTORY! Closer to Ending Congo’s Ancient Rainforest Logging
“The Democratic Republic of Congo is closer to ending ancient rainforest logging [ark], as some 60% of logging contracts on nearly 13 million hectares of forest have been canceled. A long delayed review of 156 logging deals, aimed at stamping out corruption and enforcing minimum legal and environmental standards, found that only 65 were “viable”.”

Contests

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM): Help us Select a Winner for the Exultant Ark Photo Contest!
“These five images are finalists in Jonathan Balcombe’s Exultant Ark Photo Contest. Hundreds of entries were received and now your vote will help determine the winner. The image with the most online votes will be included in Dr. Balcombe’s new coffee table book showcasing images of animals engaging in rewarding activities, such as playing, parenting, and relaxing. As a follow up to Pleasurable Kingdom, this new book will celebrate the positive aspects of animals’ existence through beautiful, vibrant photography. Please vote for your favorite and then forward to your friends so they can vote, too! Each person is limited to one vote and five lucky voters will be chosen at random to receive a copy of the Exultant Ark pictorial. Voting will be open until noon ET on Jan. 30, 2009.”

Vegan Soapbox: Cookbook Contest: Win A Vegan Cookbook
“Leave a comment here describing why you’d like a free vegan cookbook. Maybe you want a vegan cookbook so you can cook something tasty for your vegan partner. Maybe you want a vegan cookbook so you can try out vegan recipes and cut back your meat consumption. Maybe you want a vegan cookbook because even though you’re vegan, you don’t know how to cook. Whatever the reason, everyone should have a vegan cookbook! The prize cookbook is The Joy of Vegan Baking: The Compassionate Cooks’ Traditional Treats and Sinful Sweets by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau. I recently bought a copy for myself and I’ve tried a couple recipes. I like the easy to follow directions, the photos, and the flavors. I think you’ll enjoy the cookbook, too.”

Upcoming Events

World Day for Meat Abolition, January 31, 2008
“World Day for the Abolition of Meat is intended as a means of promoting the idea of abolishing the murder of animals for meat. Worldwide six million sentient beings are killed for their meat every hour! That figure doesn’t even count the fish and other sea animals, which of course are included in the demand for the abolition of meat. Meat consumption causes more suffering and death than any other human activity and is completely unnecessary.”

Dogs Deserve Better (DDB): Have a Heart for Chained Dogs Week, February 7-14, 2009
“Join us February 7-14th for Have a Heart for Chained Dogs Week. OUR GOAL in our 7th Season is to SEND OUT 12,500 VALENTINES TO CHAINED or PENNED DOGS. We are striving to raise awareness for chained and penned dogs in a positive way…by delivering Valentines, a brochure and a treat coupon to dogs living outside all over the U.S. and into other countries where we have representation, such as Canada and Australia. Here’s what you can do: 1) Make Valentines; 2) Mail Coupons for Free or Reduced Cost Treats or Dogfood; 3. Send addresses for Chained or Penned Dogs.”

Animal Aid: End Primate Experiments – Day of Action, Saturday, February 28, 2009
“After 20 years, the EU law that governs animal testing across Europe and the UK is being revised. European Directive 86/609 EEC, which applies to animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes, is the legal template on which all EU member states base their national laws. In the UK, the relevant law is the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.Sadly, this Directive does not include an independent enquiry into the scientific reliability of animal experiments, nor does it offer a total ban – something to which Animal Aid is committed unequivocally.”

About

The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy action alerts, campaign updates, carnivals, contests, newsletters, petitions, upcoming events and miscellaneous resources.

While my primary focus is non-human animals and the environment in which they live, I will cover human rights issues as well, especially as they relate to animal and environmental welfare. (For example, while reproductive rights is typically seen as a feminist or women’s issue, the growing global human population does have environmental consequences. In this vein, access to family planning resources has a tangible impact on the environment – an environment we share with non-human animals.)

This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!

If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included above. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources above; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.

If you’d like to get on the above organizations’ e-mail lists, I’ve compiled a full list of all my resources on the Get Active! page.
