Center for Biological Diversity: Petition to Protect the Verde River
“According to U.S. Geological Survey reports, the first 24 miles of the Verde River, also referred to as the upper Verde, rely on springs originating from the Big Chino aquifer for at least 80 percent of the baseflow. Hydrologists predict that, in time, pumping water from the aquifer will reduce the Verde’s flow by an amount equal to the pumpage. If pumping exceeds the natural discharge from the aquifer to the Verde, baseflow from the Big Chino will cease. Without baseflow, a stream is a dry wash, flowing only during storm runoff.”
Earthjustice: Protect America’s Rainforest – Alaska’s Tongass National Forest
“This month marks the anniversary of the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule that protected 58.5 million acres of wild national forests and grasslands from road building, logging, and other harmful development. [...] Despite this support, early in its tenure the Bush administration excluded Alaska’s Tongass rainforest from roadless protections. The Tongass is our nation’s largest national forest and the largest remaining old-growth temperate rainforest in the world. This spring, selling of old growth timber sales in roadless areas in the Tongass is scheduled to begin. Clearcutting old growth permanently damages its habitat value for old growth dependent species and building new roads will further fragment this important ecosystem.”
Kelly’s note: If you choose to use the sample letter provided by Earthjustice, please delete the phrase “ensure quality recreation for millions of hikers, fishermen, and hunters” from the second paragraph.
Elaine Vigneault: Puppymills & Related Problems
In dissecting several issues with Henderson Animal Care & Control, Elaine offers some tips on how we might be able to help our local shelters and rescue groups operate more effectively, particularly in promoting and rehoming adoptable animals.
Feminist Majority Foundation: Tell President Obama Thank You for Keeping his Pledge to Women and Girls
“Thank President Obama for keeping his pledge to women and girls around the world by abolishing the Global Gag Rule, saving the lives of countless women and girls. President Obama’s expeditious repeal of the Global Gag Rule that prevented women in the developing nations from accessing basic reproductive healthcare and AIDS prevention and treatment is a victory for women. Tell President Obama we stand with him as he stand ups for the rights of women and girls at home and aboard!”
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Save the Tongass National Forest
“The inauguration of President Obama could mean the end of an eight-year assault on America’s last pristine forests. We need your help to make sure the Obama administration makes a new commitment to protecting these remaining wildlands for generations to come. Please urge President Obama to take immediate action to preserve the old growth wilderness of Alaska’s Tongass National Forest.”
Nuclear Age Peace Foundation: Encourage President Obama to Lessen the Nuclear Threat
“At last Tuesday’s inauguration, President Obama said it plainly: “We’ll work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat.” This is a welcome change in tone and policy. We can see just how important nuclear issues are to the President by their prominent position in the Foreign Policy section of the White House website. There are significant problems confronting the United States with the economy, human rights and environmental damage. It is vital for the Obama administration to address all of these problems, but in doing so, nuclear disarmament must not get placed on the back burner. Send a message to President Obama today encouraging him to keep his focus on moving forward with nuclear disarmament.”
Ocean Conservancy: Take Action to Protect Endangered Turtles, Whales, and Manatees
“Last month, the Bush administration took us backward in our fight to protect marine wildlife by loosening the rules on the safeguarding of endangered species. They issued a rule that allows federal agencies to determine for themselves whether or not their work would threaten endangered species, eliminating transparency and science from the decision-making process. This gave the green light to federal agencies to race ahead with projects like dredging or oil and gas development, with little regard for how these activities will harm endangered species like whales, manatees, and sea turtles. Now that we have a new president and congress, we are working to undo some of the misguided policies implemented in the waning day of the previous administration including this rule, which went into effect on January 15, 2009. And we need your help!”
Public Citizen: Don’t Let Energy Costs Put the Stranglehold on You!
“Congress is considering setting aside more than $10 billion ($6 billion in grants, $4 billion in tax credits) for homeowners to weatherize their homes as part of the Obama administration’s economic stimulus package. The “green energy stimulus” also would include measures to promote renewable energy and a public works project to make public buildings more energy-efficient. Act today and urge lawmakers to include energy-efficiency initiatives for you and other homeowners in the stimulus package. Tell them to resist pleas for “pork” from the nuclear and oil industries, which have gotten plenty over the past few years – at your expense.”
The Wilderness Society: Tell Your Representative to Support the Omnibus Public Land Management Act
“Long-awaited and historic Wilderness legislation is on the verge of an important vote in Congress. But the vote may be close. Urge your Representative to support the Omnibus Public Land Management Act without amendment, sending this landmark legislation to President Obama for his signature.”

World Day for Meat Abolition, January 31, 2008
“World Day for the Abolition of Meat is intended as a means of promoting the idea of abolishing the murder of animals for meat. Worldwide six million sentient beings are killed for their meat every hour! That figure doesn’t even count the fish and other sea animals, which of course are included in the demand for the abolition of meat. Meat consumption causes more suffering and death than any other human activity and is completely unnecessary.”

Animal Aid: End Primate Experiments – Day of Action, Saturday, February 28, 2009
“After 20 years, the EU law that governs animal testing across Europe and the UK is being revised. European Directive 86/609 EEC, which applies to animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes, is the legal template on which all EU member states base their national laws. In the UK, the relevant law is the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.Sadly, this Directive does not include an independent enquiry into the scientific reliability of animal experiments, nor does it offer a total ban – something to which Animal Aid is committed unequivocally.”

About
The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy action alerts, campaign updates, carnivals, contests, newsletters, petitions, upcoming events and miscellaneous resources.
While my primary focus is non-human animals and the environment in which they live, I will cover human rights issues as well, especially as they relate to animal and environmental welfare. (For example, while reproductive rights is typically seen as a feminist or women’s issue, the growing global human population does have environmental consequences. In this vein, access to family planning resources has a tangible impact on the environment – an environment we share with non-human animals.)
This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!
If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included above. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources above; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.
If you’d like to get on the above organizations’ e-mail lists, I’ve compiled a full list of all my resources on the Get Active! page.
