Action Alerts

Alaska Wilderness League: Revoke Bush’s Plan to Drill in ‘Polar Bear Seas’
“The icy waters of the Beaufort and Chukchi seas, north of Alaska, are home to 20 percent of the world’s remaining polar bear population. Thanks to George Bush, these waters might also become home to a massive and dangerous network of oil rigs and pipelines. On his way out of Washington, Bush proposed the largest block yet of Arctic Ocean waters for drilling – right in the heart of threatened polar bear habitat. Oil spills are a certainty in that harsh climate and no technology exists to clean them up. Drilling is simply not worth it.”

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): Tell Your Senators to Support Pay Equality Today
“Over 45 years ago, Congress passed the Equal Pay Act to fix the disparity in wages between men and women, but over time, loopholes and weak remedies have lessened its effectiveness. The Paycheck Fairness Act makes several common sense changes to strengthen the Equal Pay Act — putting in place enforcement tools needed to make real progress on pay equity. The Paycheck Fairness Act is an important and measured approach to eradicating wage discrimination and is another critical weapon in the battle against sex discrimination in the workplace. Take action today to strengthen our tools to combat wage disparities.”

Earthjustice: Tell EPA to Control CO2
“Should the EPA force a monster proposed coal-fired power plant to control 12.7 million tons of carbon dioxide it will spew out each year? The Obama-led EPA is asking Americans to tell it what to do. Take action by February 23rd—Tell the EPA to place the strictest-possible controls on the Desert Rock power plant.”

Green for All: Tell Your Senators to Get On Board: Pass Obama’s Green Recovery Plan
“President Obama and Congress are currently crafting an economic stimulus and recovery plan which could jumpstart an inclusive green economy and create hundreds of thousands of green jobs. The House of Representatives just passed a bold and visionary green stimulus plan, including $500 million to train workers for green-collar jobs. But your Senators need a little nudge to get on board. Please write to your Senators today. Tell them to pass President Obama’s green stimulus, including $500 million for the Green Jobs Act. It’s time to build a strong, green economy for America.”

National Organization for Women (NOW): Promote Economic Recovery, Support Family Planning
“Tell Congress and the President that the Economic Recovery package may be “shovel ready,” but poor women got the axe. As you may have heard, an important family planning provision was unceremoniously dumped from the economic recovery package this week, after Republican leaders and conservative pundits complained about it all weekend. [...] In times of job loss and economic desperation, many women and families cannot afford the increasingly high cost of contraception — nor can they afford the alternative. Our leaders need to hear from you that the ability to prevent an unplanned pregnancy is key to economic security.”

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Urge President Obama’s Interior Secretary to Rescue the Polar Bear!
“Tell Interior Secretary Salazar that struggling polar bears can’t wait any longer. With extinction looming as soon as 2050 for Alaska’s polar bears, the Interior Department must reverse the Bush Administration’s “polluters-first” policies quickly — and grant the polar bear the full-fledged protection it so desperately needs. Please send a message now calling for immediate polar bear protection.”

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): Urge Valley Forge National Historical Park to Halt Plans to Shoot Deer
“Compassionate Pennsylvania residents have contacted PETA out of concern about the National Park Service’s (NPS) decision to recommend lethal methods to control deer at Valley Forge National Historical Park. A December 2008 Environmental Impact Statement states that sharp-shooting and other lethal measures may be used to reduce the deer herd living at the park. [...] Please contact the NPS and politely urge it to halt plans to kill deer at Valley Forge and instead push for long-term deer-management methods that are more effective and humane.”

Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health (PRCH): Tell Congress to Fund Women’s Health
“Tell your senators to reinstate the Medicaid waiver for family planning in the economic stimulus bill. The U.S. House just passed their version of the bill, after removing a Medicaid waiver for family planning that would have let every state expand basic medical services like cancer screenings and birth control to women who couldn’t otherwise afford healthcare. Now the Senate will have its say. Make sure the U.S. Senate includes funding for women’s health in the stimulus bill.”

The Sierra Club: Urge the Senate to Support the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
“On Wednesday night the House of Representatives passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 — a bill that recognizes the vital role clean energy can play in driving economic recovery. The bill makes an important down payment on solutions that will transform America’s economy and lead to a clean energy future that will benefit generations to come. [...] Please take this opportunity to urge your Senator to support this bold plan for stimulating our struggling economy by investing in clean energy and green jobs.”

Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS): Urge Your Representative to Protect Native Wildlife
“Our lakes, rivers, forests, grasslands, wetlands, and native animals and plants are threatened every day by the worldwide movement of non-native species that can spread disease, alter ecosystems, and cause serious economic harm to industries and communities. Scientifically evaluating these organisms for their potential to take over native areas before permitting them to be imported is a common sense and cost-effective method to avoid ecological and economic harm. By requiring this practical “screening” of animals, Congress can help prevent loss of wildlife and habitat, introduction of diseases, and economic losses. Urge your representative to cosponsor the Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act to protect the United States from invasive species.”

Campaign Updates

Animal Rights @ Change.org: Billy the Elephant and the Los Angeles Zoo
“As many of you know but as some may not, animal advocates of one stripe were pitted against self-described animal advocates of another stripe in the battle over expansion of the Los Angeles Zoo’s elephant exhibit. The advocates with whom I agree wanted the exhibit shut down and Billy sent to a sanctuary, where he could roam more freely, more naturally, and–very importantly–with more of his own kind. The other side wanted bunches of money (tens of millions) poured into expanding the exhibit/habitat and for Billy to stay where he is.”

ecorazzi: Bob Barker Pledges $1.5 Million To Move LA Elephant, Loses Fight
“After more than two years of lobbying to rescue Billy the elephant from the LA Zoo, Bob Barker and a host of other celebrities and organizations have lost the fight. The City Council voted Wednesday to finish a $42 million elephant exhibit and keep its lone pachyderm at the zoo. Earlier in the week, the former Price Is Right host had pledged $1.5 million of his own money to move Billy from the zoo to an animal sanctuary in Northern California.”

Upcoming Events

World Day for Meat Abolition, January 31, 2008
“World Day for the Abolition of Meat is intended as a means of promoting the idea of abolishing the murder of animals for meat. Worldwide six million sentient beings are killed for their meat every hour! That figure doesn’t even count the fish and other sea animals, which of course are included in the demand for the abolition of meat. Meat consumption causes more suffering and death than any other human activity and is completely unnecessary.”

Dogs Deserve Better (DDB): Have a Heart for Chained Dogs Week, February 7-14, 2009
“Join us February 7-14th for Have a Heart for Chained Dogs Week. OUR GOAL in our 7th Season is to SEND OUT 12,500 VALENTINES TO CHAINED or PENNED DOGS. We are striving to raise awareness for chained and penned dogs in a positive way…by delivering Valentines, a brochure and a treat coupon to dogs living outside all over the U.S. and into other countries where we have representation, such as Canada and Australia. Here’s what you can do: 1) Make Valentines; 2) Mail Coupons for Free or Reduced Cost Treats or Dogfood; 3. Send addresses for Chained or Penned Dogs.”

Animal Aid: End Primate Experiments – Day of Action, Saturday, February 28, 2009
“After 20 years, the EU law that governs animal testing across Europe and the UK is being revised. European Directive 86/609 EEC, which applies to animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes, is the legal template on which all EU member states base their national laws. In the UK, the relevant law is the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.Sadly, this Directive does not include an independent enquiry into the scientific reliability of animal experiments, nor does it offer a total ban – something to which Animal Aid is committed unequivocally.”

About

The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy action alerts, campaign updates, carnivals, contests, newsletters, petitions, upcoming events and miscellaneous resources.

While my primary focus is non-human animals and the environment in which they live, I will cover human rights issues as well, especially as they relate to animal and environmental welfare. (For example, while reproductive rights is typically seen as a feminist or women’s issue, the growing global human population does have environmental consequences. In this vein, access to family planning resources has a tangible impact on the environment – an environment we share with non-human animals.)

This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!

If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included above. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources above; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.

If you’d like to get on the above organizations’ e-mail lists, I’ve compiled a full list of all my resources on the Get Active! page.
