Action Alerts

Alaska Wilderness League: Revoke Bush’s Plan to Drill in ‘Polar Bear Seas’
“The icy waters of the Beaufort and Chukchi seas, north of Alaska, are home to 20 percent of the world’s remaining polar bear population. Thanks to George Bush, these waters might also become home to a massive and dangerous network of oil rigs and pipelines. On his way out of Washington, Bush proposed the largest block yet of Arctic Ocean waters for drilling – right in the heart of threatened polar bear habitat. Oil spills are a certainty in that harsh climate and no technology exists to clean them up. Drilling is simply not worth it.”

American Rivers: RiverAlert: Help Us Designate 86 New Wild and Scenic Rivers
“A few weeks ago, our eActivists helped us get legislation passed in the Senate to protect more than 80 new Wild and Scenic Rivers — sending more than 1,500 letters urging Senators to vote for the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009. Now we need your help again, this time with the U.S. House of Representatives. Next week the House will vote on a package of bills that include Wild and Scenic designations for 86 rivers. The bill would safeguard more than 270,000 acres along more than 1,100 miles of rivers, including the Snake Headwaters in Wyoming, rivers in the Owyhee River basin in Idaho, and rivers flowing off of Mt. Hood in Oregon. Only once before in history has Congress protected more rivers at one time under the federal Wild and Scenic Rivers System.”

Kelly’s note: As always, if you choose to use the sample letter provided by American Rivers, please remove the following phrase in paragraph #2: “fantastic hunting, fishing and boating recreation.”

Ecological Internet / Forests .org: Action Alert: Support Finnish NGOs in Their Fight for Lapland’s Ancient Forests
“Protest Finnish timber giant Stora Enso and the government profiting from destroying Finland’s last ancient forests. Let them know Finland and the World’s old-growth must be protected and restored to sustain the Earth’s biosphere and ecosystem processes including climate, water and biodiversity.”

Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF): Time to Act on ACTA: Tell Congress to Open the Secret IP Pact
“Despite the new administration’s policy of openness, the Anti-Counterfeiting Copyright Agreement (ACTA) still remains shrouded in secrecy. But language leaked from the negotiations reveal that it threatens to shift the balance of copyright law across the world, with little or no oversight from lawmakers. ACTA is currently being negotiated between the US, Europe and other states, including Japan, Australia, and Canada. It reaches a fifth round of deliberations in Morocco next month. Some expect the document to be ready for signing by then. Even though the process has taken over a year to reach this stage, the entire negotiation has been kept secret from the public.”

Environmental Defense: Urgent Alert: Oppose Sinister Barrasso Amendment
“We need your urgent help to oppose the sinister Barrasso amendment to the Senate stimulus bill. If it passes, the Barrasso amendment would waive America’s core environmental law, the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA), for all projects funded by the economic stimulus. NEPA is the law that ensures that individuals and communities that may be harmed by major federal actions have advance notice of the project, an opportunity to comment, and information about the impacts of the proposed project and alternatives to it.”

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Urge the Obama Administration to Protect Whales from Bush’s Final Salvo
“Tell the Obama Administration to protect thousands of whales and dolphins from the Bush Administration’s last-minute barrage of attacks. If these midnight rules are not revised, the Navy will be allowed to flood our oceans with mid-frequency active sonar — without putting essential safeguards in place — and to harass marine mammals more than 10 million times along the Eastern Seaboard, the Gulf of Mexico, California and Hawaii.”

Nuclear Age Peace Foundation: Support US-Russia Talks to Reduce Nuclear Arsenals
“According to a recent story by the Times of London, US President Barack Obama is seeking to engage the Russians in the most ambitious nuclear arms reduction talks in decades. The report says that under a new agreement the number of nuclear weapons will likely be reduced to 1,000 on each side. This would be a major step along the path to nuclear disarmament, and would show the world that both the US and Russia are willing to cooperate to truly strengthen global security.”

PETA: Urge Tesco Grocery Stores to Drop Foie Gras
“Because of the extreme cruelty of foie gras—the diseased and “fatty liver” of force-fed ducks and geese—many grocery stores around the world have removed the delicacy of despair from their shelves. Yet Tesco, a chain of grocery stores in Europe that is expanding to the U.S. under the name Fresh & Easy, is one chain that still chooses to unapologetically sell the product in some countries. We need you to write to Tesco now and demand that it stop selling foie gras worldwide so that the cruelty-filled food does not end up on the shelves of its new U.S. stores.”

Public Citizen: It’s Time to Stop Toying with Safety
“Many of us were overjoyed when the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) was signed into law last August. It seemed that consumer products would finally be made safer: Toys and infant products would be tested before they were sold, lead and phthalates would be banned in toys, and a public database of products reported to be hazardous would be created. But now Senator Jim DeMint has proposed an amendment to the economic stimulus package that would undermine many critical consumer protections. His alarmist reaction in the name of small business interests in fact benefits the largest manufacturers and allows unsafe products to remain on shelves.”

The Wilderness Society: Tell Your Representative to Support the Omnibus Public Land Management Act
“Long-awaited and historic Wilderness legislation is on the verge of an important vote in Congress. But the vote may be close. Urge your Representative to support the Omnibus Public Land Management Act without amendment, sending this landmark legislation to President Obama for his signature.”

Campaign Updates

The PETA Files: No Elephants in Britney’s ‘Circus’
“Unless you’re a die-hard Britney Spears fan and regular visitor to her Web site, you heard it here first: The top-secret stage design plans for Britney’s upcoming “Circus” tour will include no live animals.”

Pew Environmental Group: United States Protects America’s Arctic From Industrial Fishing
“We are pleased to announce that the North Pacific Fishery Management Council voted yesterday in favor of closing nearly 200,000 square miles of Arctic waters to industrial fishing. The Arctic petition you signed this week – which included over 30,000 signatures from people across the planet – influenced this decision. Your continued action helps keep the pressure on our policy makers to consider science-based solutions to our environmental problems. Thank you for your support.”

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM): We are pleased to announce the winner of the Exultant Ark Photo Contest
“Congratulations to Wanda Embar!…More than 5,000 votes decided the winning image! Thank you to all who entered the contest and those who took the time to vote. Wanda’s photograph will appear in my Exultant Ark pictorial book.”

The Wilderness Society: Department of Interior cancels controversial drilling leases
“More than 100,000 acres of Utah wilderness received protection from oil and gas drilling on Feb. 4 when Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar announced the agency would cancel 77 controversial land leases issued under the Bush Administration.”

Animal Aid: End Primate Experiments – Day of Action, Saturday, February 28, 2009
“After 20 years, the EU law that governs animal testing across Europe and the UK is being revised. European Directive 86/609 EEC, which applies to animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes, is the legal template on which all EU member states base their national laws. In the UK, the relevant law is the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.Sadly, this Directive does not include an independent enquiry into the scientific reliability of animal experiments, nor does it offer a total ban – something to which Animal Aid is committed unequivocally.”

National Pigeon Day – Saturday, June 13, 2009

About

The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy action alerts, campaign updates, carnivals, contests, newsletters, petitions, upcoming events and miscellaneous resources.

While my primary focus is non-human animals and the environment in which they live, I will cover human rights issues as well, especially as they relate to animal and environmental welfare. (For example, while reproductive rights is typically seen as a feminist or women’s issue, the growing global human population does have environmental consequences. In this vein, access to family planning resources has a tangible impact on the environment – an environment we share with non-human animals.)

This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!

If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included above. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources above; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.

If you’d like to get on the above organizations’ e-mail lists, I’ve compiled a full list of all my resources on the Get Active! page.
