Action Alerts

American Freedom Campaign: Tell Attorney General Holder to open a criminal investigation of Bush administration crimes
“On February 9, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) called for the establishment of a “Truth Commission” to look into various unconstitutional actions by the Bush administration. As Leahy described the commission, “such a process could involve subpoena powers and even the authority to obtain immunity from prosecutions for anything accept perjury in order to get to the full truth.” We don’t want “the truth.” We already know the Bush administration authorized torture. We already know they conducted warrantless wiretapping in violation of federal law. We already know Bush administration officials defied congressional subpoenas. What more do we need to know?”

Animal Rights @ Change .org: Millions of Animals Dead or Injured in Australia’s Wildfires
“There’s no easy reading here. If you are able to donate to Wildlife Victoria’s emergency fund, to help the injured survivors, many of whom are also without habitat now and at risk of starvation, in addition to being at risk from their injuries, please click here.”

Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR): Stop the Abuse of the State Secrets Privilege
“In a key case seeking justice for victims of extraordinary rendition – the policy of outsourcing torture – the Justice Department under President Obama stated on Monday that it would continue to use the “state secrets” privilege to attempt to bar five victims from seeking justice in U.S. courts. Join us today to tell Attorney General Eric Holder to stop abuse of the state secrets privilege to cover up criminal behavior and torture and keep the claims of torture victims out of court.”

Farm Sanctuary: End Cruel Confinement Nationwide: Enact a Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Law
“Farm Sanctuary urges states, counties and cities across the nation to ban this type of cruelty, with local and state-wide laws requiring enough space to give chickens, pigs and calves room to at least turn around, stand up, lie down, and spread their limbs. [...] Ask lawmakers in your community to sponsor a bill or ordinance ending cruel confinement practices.”

Kinship Circle: 2/11/09: Horse Slaughter Bill Is Back In 111th Congress
“The Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2009 (H.R. 503) is back on the legislative calendar, after moving through the Judiciary Committee with bipartisan approval in the last Congressional session. Please help pass this measure to ban the possession, shipping, transporting, purchasing, selling, delivering or receiving of a horse or horseflesh for human consumption.”

People for the American Way (PFAW): Campaign to Restore Justice
“Justice has been on vacation for eight long years. It needs to be restored. People For the American Way is launching a Campaign to Restore Justice. That means restoring checks and balances, accountability, transparency and the rule of law — some of our most fundamental constitutional values that have been stepped on and undermined by the previous administration. Sign on to our three-point petition to congressional leaders to be one of the first people to endorse this campaign.”

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM): 36 Days to Save Michigan Dogs: Please Take Action
“We asked for your help to end the use of live dogs for trauma training at the University of Michigan. And more than 11,000 of you contacted University of Michigan executive vice president for medical affairs Robert P. Kelch, M.D., and dean James Woolliscroft, M.D. To keep the pressure on the school, PCRM put up three billboards in Michigan earlier this week that ask University of Michigan not to “put man’s best friend under the knife.” And now we need you to contact University of Michigan’s president and ask her to save the dogs scheduled to be used and killed during the next course on March 20.”

Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA): Thank Pres. Obama and Sec. Salazar for Reversing Bush Lease Sale
“As a parting gift to the energy industry, the Bureau of Land Management announced expansion of its Utah oil and gas leasing program to include thousands of acres on or near the boundaries of Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, as well as Dinosaur National Monument. The iconic landscapes of Desolation and Nine Mile Canyons are also threatened by the lease sale that occurred on December 19, 2008. On February 4, 2009, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced that the Obama adminstration would be cancelling the 77 lease parcels sold on wilderness-quality lands. Please send a message to President Obama and Secretary Salazar thanking them for reversing the lease sale, and also asking them to revise the Resource Management plans that allowed for the lease sale to occur.”

Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS): Urge your representative to support a strong national renewable electricity standard
“A strong national renewable electricity standard (RES) would reduce global warming pollution, create jobs, and save consumers money. It would require utilities to generate an increasing percentage of their electricity from clean, renewable resources such as the sun, wind, heat from the planet’s interior, and plant and animal waste. Recent changes in Washington have presented us with an historic window of opportunity to pass this critical legislation. But we must ensure our representatives support a strong standard that doesn’t squander our opportunity to renew our economy with clean, renewable energy. Please urge your representative to co-sponsor the 25 percent by 2025 renewable electricity standard bill that was recently introduced in the House of Representatives.”

Campaign Updates

Environmental Defense Fund: Stimulus Deal Reached. How Did We Do?
“Senate and House negotiators reached agreement on a final $789 billion stimulus package Wednesday afternoon. [...] Since early January, the EDF Action Network sent more than 120,000 emails supporting a green bill. So, how did we do? Our legislative experts are reviewing the final language and will be updating details here.”

Animal Aid: End Primate Experiments – Day of Action, Saturday, February 28, 2009
“After 20 years, the EU law that governs animal testing across Europe and the UK is being revised. European Directive 86/609 EEC, which applies to animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes, is the legal template on which all EU member states base their national laws. In the UK, the relevant law is the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.Sadly, this Directive does not include an independent enquiry into the scientific reliability of animal experiments, nor does it offer a total ban – something to which Animal Aid is committed unequivocally.”

Capitol Climate Action: March 2, 2009 in Washington, D.C.
“On March 2, join thousands of people in a multi-generational act of civil disobedience at the Capitol Power Plant — a plant that powers Congress with dirty energy and symbolizes a past that cannot be our future. Let’s use this as a rallying cry for a clean energy economy that will protect the health of our families, our climate, and our future.”

About

The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy action alerts, campaign updates, carnivals, contests, newsletters, petitions, upcoming events and miscellaneous resources.

While my primary focus is non-human animals and the environment in which they live, I will cover human rights issues as well, especially as they relate to animal and environmental welfare. (For example, while reproductive rights is typically seen as a feminist or women’s issue, the growing global human population does have environmental consequences. In this vein, access to family planning resources has a tangible impact on the environment – an environment we share with non-human animals.)

This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!

If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included above. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources above; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.

If you’d like to get on the above organizations’ e-mail lists, I’ve compiled a full list of all my resources on the Get Active! page.
