Animal Person: On Attempts to Bring Dog Racing to Jamaica and South Africa
Please contact Jamaican and South African officials and urge them against legalizing dog racing in their respective countries.
Democracy for America (DFA): President YOU
“President Barack Obama will address Congress for the first time next week. He’ll announce a set of critical issues that he considers to be the most pressing for our nation to address, and he’ll ask for our support and participation as part of the solution. In your view, what are the most pressing issues facing the country today? Tell us what you would make the centerpiece of the address if you were President.”
Forest Ethics: Tell President Obama and Prime Minister Harper: Tar Sands oil doesn’t fit in the new energy economy!
“President Obama will visit Canada on February 19. His visit is an opportunity to show that both Canadians and Americans want to move towards President Obama’s vision for a new energy economy based on clean, innovative solutions. Rather than embracing this vision, Canadian government officials are attempting to expand the development of dirty Tar Sands oil. Tar Sands oil contributes to global warming, destroys the Boreal forest, and endangers public health.”
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Tell President Obama that dirty Canadian tar sands have no place in our clean energy future
“Tar sands development has been called the most destructive project on earth because of the global warming pollution it produces and its toxic mining operations. Tell President Obama to convey to Canadian officials the message that a clean energy future does not include dirty tar sands oil.”
The Sierra Club: Sign Our Petition to Urge President Obama to Address Tar Sands
“President Obama will travel to Canada this week on his first presidential visit abroad where he faces pressure to support Canadian production of tar sands oil, considered the dirtiest energy project on earth. Please sign our petition urging President Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Harper to stay true to the goal of a clean energy economy and ensure tar sands are not exempted from any climate agreement with Canada.”
The Sierra Club: It’s time for EPA to take charge and end the practice of mountaintop removal coal mining!
“On Friday, a panel of federal judges ruled in favor of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in a controversial mountaintop removal mining case. The ruling would permit mining companies to conduct devastating mountaintop removal coal mining operations without acting to minimize stream destruction or conducting adequate environmental reviews. As a result, Appalachia could be facing as many as 150 new mountaintop removal coal mining operations, 90 in West Virginia alone, which would destroy huge swaths of the Appalachian Mountains.”
United Farm Workers (UFW): Rehire Simon San German
“Two weeks ago we told you about Simon San German, the brave farm worker who spoke up against the huge vegetable grower Tamimura and Antle. [...] The week after we sent you the e-mail Simon spoke up again during a worker meeting, when the company tried to unevenly reduce their work hours. Simon was fired immediately afterwards. When Simon asked why, he stated the ranch supervisor told him, ‘He was tired of me, that I caused him many problems.’”
World Wildlife Fund (WWF): Help Imperiled Coral Reefs and Tropical Forests
“You can help protect coral reefs and tropical forests — two of the most valuable and threatened ecosystems on the planet — by urging your members of Congress to cosponsor the Tropical Forest and Coral Conservation Act. [...] The bill would provide funding for debt-for-nature swaps that
contribute to the protection of forests and coral reefs in qualified developing countries. Debt-for-nature swaps, which WWF helped pioneer in the 1980s, involve purchasing foreign debt at a discount, converting the debt into local currency, and using the proceeds to finance local conservation activities. It’s an innovative technique that allows cash-strapped countries to protect globally important natural resources.”
Campaign Updates
1Sky: Thank President Obama and Supporters of a Green Recovery
“President Obama has signed into law an economic recovery bill that contains $87 billion in green investment funds–the largest green investment ever! The green investments in the recovery bill will not only create over 1.7 million green jobs our country needs urgently: they are also a critical down payment on a clean, renewable energy economy.”
Greenpeace UK: Airplot: The plot thickens
“As benefical owners of the Airplot, we want to keep you up to date with what’s been going on. Over the past month, the unstoppable Airplot juggernaut has continued to grow. As I write, we have 36,902 Airplotters signed up to be beneficial owners, and growing. In fact, our active supporters have been out signing up people on the streets over the weekend, so we’re expecting another load of sign-ups to flood in soon. First, the brand-new Airplot website has just launched at www.airplot.org.uk – and you’re the first people we’ve told!”

Upcoming Events
Animal Aid: End Primate Experiments – Day of Action, Saturday, February 28, 2009
“After 20 years, the EU law that governs animal testing across Europe and the UK is being revised. European Directive 86/609 EEC, which applies to animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes, is the legal template on which all EU member states base their national laws. In the UK, the relevant law is the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.Sadly, this Directive does not include an independent enquiry into the scientific reliability of animal experiments, nor does it offer a total ban – something to which Animal Aid is committed unequivocally.”
Capitol Climate Action: March 2, 2009 in Washington, D.C.
“On March 2, join thousands of people in a multi-generational act of civil disobedience at the Capitol Power Plant — a plant that powers Congress with dirty energy and symbolizes a past that cannot be our future. Let’s use this as a rallying cry for a clean energy economy that will protect the health of our families, our climate, and our future.”
The Great American Meatout – March 20, 2009
“On (or around) March 20 — the first day of spring — thousands of caring people in all 50 U.S. states and two dozen other countries get active to host educational Meatout events. Activities include colorful festivals, lectures, public dinners, feed-ins, cooking demos, food samplings, leafleting, information tables and more.”
Earth Hour 2009 – March 28, 2009
“Mark your calendar and plan to join millions of people around the world in turning off the lights at 8:30 p.m., March 28, 2009, for one hour—Earth Hour—to raise awareness and take action to fight climate change. U.S. activists: Turn your action into something even bigger! Push your federal and state elected officials to shut off their lights and to take strong action to fight climate change.”

“The New York Bird Club cordially invites you to participate in the Second Annual National Pigeon Day Celebration on Saturday, June 13th from Noon to 4 p.m. on Pilgrim Hill in Central Park in New York City. About
The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy action alerts, campaign updates, carnivals, contests, newsletters, petitions, upcoming events and miscellaneous resources.
While my primary focus is non-human animals and the environment in which they live, I will cover human rights issues as well, especially as they relate to animal and environmental welfare. (For example, while reproductive rights is typically seen as a feminist or women’s issue, the growing global human population does have environmental consequences. In this vein, access to family planning resources has a tangible impact on the environment – an environment we share with non-human animals.)
This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!
If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included above. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources above; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.
If you’d like to get on the above organizations’ e-mail lists, I’ve compiled a full list of all my resources on the Get Active! page.
