Action Alerts

Amnesty International: Investigate misuse of US weapons in Gaza and stop arms transfers to Israel
“Amnesty International researchers came across many US made white phosphorus artillery carrier shells, and fragments of other US produced weapons, throughout Gaza. We consider the repeated use of white phosphorus in densely-populated civilian areas a form of indiscriminate attack, and amounts to a war crime. Since 2001, the USA has been by far the major supplier of conventional arms to Israel, including government to government as well as private commercial sales. In addition to this trade, the USA has provided large funding each year for Israel to procure arms despite US legislation that restricts such aid to consistently gross human rights violators. Call for a US government investigation into Israel’s potential misuse of US made weapons in Gaza.”

Farm Sanctuary: Is Compassion on Your Kid’s Menu?
“The Child Nutrition Act is the foundation for food policy in our schools. This year, Congress will reauthorize the law, providing us a tremendous opportunity to bring more vegan options to schoolchildren around the country. [...] Urge your federal senators and representative to support more plant-based choices in the programs administered under the Child Nutrition Act. Specifically, ask that non-dairy milk, such as soy or rice milk, be easily available to school children.”

Farm Sanctuary: Isn’t it time for Illinois dairy farmers to stop cutting cows’ tails off?
“Many large-scale dairy producers routinely cut off a large portion of their cows’ tails. A bill has been introduced by Sen. Antonio Munoz to ban the cruel and unnecessary practice of tail-docking in Illinois, but the industry is pressuring your state senators to oppose the measure. Your voice is needed! [...] Don’t let industrial farm lobbyists defeat this modest but important reform. Contact your state senator today urging them to support SB 1336!”

Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF): Support the Captive Primate Safety Act
“There are an estimated 15,000 monkeys and other primates in private hands in the United States. Sadly, many primates kept as pets end up abused or neglected. Often acquired as infants, as they grow they can become too strong and aggressive to handle. The Captive Primate Safety Act (H.R. 80) prohibits interstate and foreign commerce in primates as pets. Please make a brief, polite phone call to your U.S. Representative to urge support for H.R. 80, the Captive Primate Safety Act and do all they can to pass this important legislation.”

Media Matters: Willful Denial
“Last week, The Washington Post ran a column by George Will that misused data and distorted statements by climate experts to suggest that human-caused global warming is not occurring. Despite the widespread outcry about Will’s climate misinformation, the Post has refused to correct the record. Now we need your help — to demand that The Washington Post run a correction.”

PETA: Ask Governor Rell to Ban Primates as Pets
“On February 16, an adult chimpanzee kept as a “pet” in Stamford, Connecticut, attacked a woman who, according to news reports, is now hospitalized in serious condition. [...] This terrible situation could easily have been avoided if Travis had been living at an accredited sanctuary and not in a private home, being treated as if he were a human. The private ownership of exotic animals has reached epidemic proportions in the U.S. Animal protection organizations and law enforcement agencies expend untold resources in their efforts to address the numerous tragedies that inevitably arise when exotic animals are kept in roadside zoos and pseudo-sanctuaries or as “pets.” Please contact Governor Rell and urge her to add primates to the state’s ban on potentially dangerous animals, which already includes big cats, bears, and wolves.”

PETA: Urgent: Urge Oklahoma Officials to Throw the Book at YouTube Cat Abusers!
“PETA’s office has been inundated with calls and e-mails regarding a case of cruelty to animals in Lawton, Oklahoma, where two teenaged sadists filmed themselves abusing a terrified cat—tormenting, punching, and slamming him against the walls of a shower stall—and posted the video on YouTube. Earlier videos posted by these cowards depict them bullying a second cat as well. According to local media, the two teenagers allegedly responsible each face two counts of felony cruelty to animals. Thankfully, we understand that the victims of this abuse are now safe.”

PETA: Urge Ontario Officials to Halt Medieval Deer Massacre
“Compassionate Ontario residents have contacted PETA out of concern about the London City Council’s decision to recommend lethal methods to control deer at Sifton Bog. According to the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority, bow hunting and other lethal measures may be used to reduce the size of the deer herd living at the bog. [...] Now we need your help to ask London officials to do the right thing! Please contact London officials and politely urge them to halt plans to kill deer using bows at Sifton Bog and instead push for long-term deer-management methods that are more effective and humane.”

PETA: Urge Officials to Ban Cruel Glue Traps From Palm Beach County Courthouse!
“PETA has been contacted by a number of distraught Palm Beach, Florida, residents, after an article in local media reported that dozens of cruel glue traps are currently set out in the Palm Beach County Courthouse. Compassionate people are horrified to learn that county officials have opted to use what is arguably the most inhumane method of lethal rodent control.”

PETA: URGENT: Starving Deer Dying, Abused on Sacred Island
“Miyajima (Itsukushima Jinja), near the coast of Hiroshima, is known as “Shrine Island” and is considered one of the holiest places in Japan. Tourists from all over the world flock there every year. Deer, indigenous to this island, have come to rely on the public to feed them—a longstanding tradition that was encouraged for years. However feeding has now been prohibited by authorities, and the deer are now reportedly starving to death. Apparently survivors are in terrible shape and so desperate for food that they are eating plastic bags and other hazardous items. Sources claim that island residents are attacking animals who venture into town in search of sustenance.”

Progressive Democrats of America (PDA): Healthcare NOT Warfare–Windmills NOT Weapons – Cut the Military Budget
“The United States is facing an economic crisis unlike any it has seen in 80 years. The Federal Reserve and FDIC have already spent trillions on the bailout. Now Congress has approved an economic stimulus that will cost near $800 billion. The national debt is over $10 trillion and the annual deficit is over $1 trillion. How is the United States going to pay for it? How is it going to fund the new energy economy, schools, education, health care and other urgent needs? One solution: cut the wasteful and bloated military budget. Tell the president, your senators, and your representative to cut the military budget and invest in rebuilding America.”

The Sierra Club: Stop the Pipeline to Pollution
“Last week, in response to President Obama’s his first international visit to Canada, more than 30,000 Sierra Club activists signed a petition urging the President to advocate for clean energy and say no to further development of the dirty Canadian tar sands oil. In the meeting, President Obama acknowledged that Canadian tar sands oil “creates a big carbon footprint” and declared that the United States was going to demonstrate leadership on dealing with global warming pollution and advancing clean energy solutions. But oil companies are still trying to build a pipeline from Canada so they can sell us their tar sands oil, one of the dirtiest fuels on the planet. Let President Obama and the State Department know you want clean energy that creates jobs in the United States instead of permitting a pipeline to pollution.”

True Majority: Cut wasteful spending on Pentagon programs which don’t contribute to our security
“TrueMajority was founded on the idea that the world would be a better place if we spent a little less on war and weapons, and invested a little more in priorities that benefit us all, like education and health care. Well tomorrow morning, in a briefing room on Capitol Hill, a leading Congressman is announcing a plan to do just that – cut the Pentagon’s bloated budget so we can afford health care for all Americans and other domestic priorities. It’s a big step for us, but it’s only a first step, and if it’s going to work we need to back it up with some serious grassroots pressure.”

United Farm Workers (UFW): Don’t let America’s Toughest Sheriff Break the Law. Sign the Petition Today.
“Help us make sure “America’s Toughest Sheriff” does not get a free pass on his controversial tactics. It’s been reported that Sheriff Joe Arpaio has engaged in racial profiling and civil rights abuses for years with impunity. We need your help to end the abuse. The UFW is working with America’s Voice and other immigration groups to get 10,000 signatures on a petition by March 7.”

We’d like to send out a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who contributed addresses, Valentines, and coupons for the 2009 campaign.”

Upcoming Events

Spay Day USA – February 24, 2009
“The fifteenth annual Spay Day USA, started by the Doris Day Animal League in 1995, takes place on February 24, 2009. Throughout the United States, the entire month of February is designated as Spay/Neuter Month. Spay Day USA is America’s first and ONLY national day of action to promote the spaying or neutering of pets. During Spay Day USA’s first thirteen years, participants spayed or neutered more than 1,386,000 animals!”

Animal Aid: End Primate Experiments – Day of Action, Saturday, February 28, 2009
“After 20 years, the EU law that governs animal testing across Europe and the UK is being revised. European Directive 86/609 EEC, which applies to animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes, is the legal template on which all EU member states base their national laws. In the UK, the relevant law is the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.Sadly, this Directive does not include an independent enquiry into the scientific reliability of animal experiments, nor does it offer a total ban – something to which Animal Aid is committed unequivocally.”

Capitol Climate Action: March 2, 2009 in Washington, D.C.
“On March 2, join thousands of people in a multi-generational act of civil disobedience at the Capitol Power Plant — a plant that powers Congress with dirty energy and symbolizes a past that cannot be our future. Let’s use this as a rallying cry for a clean energy economy that will protect the health of our families, our climate, and our future.”

The Great American Meatout – March 20, 2009
“On (or around) March 20 — the first day of spring — thousands of caring people in all 50 U.S. states and two dozen other countries get active to host educational Meatout events. Activities include colorful festivals, lectures, public dinners, feed-ins, cooking demos, food samplings, leafleting, information tables and more.”

Earth Hour 2009 – March 28, 2009
“Mark your calendar and plan to join millions of people around the world in turning off the lights at 8:30 p.m., March 28, 2009, for one hour—Earth Hour—to raise awareness and take action to fight climate change. U.S. activists: Turn your action into something even bigger! Push your federal and state elected officials to shut off their lights and to take strong action to fight climate change.”

American Humane Association (AHA): Every Day Is Tag Day – April 4, 2009
“The American Humane Association celebrates every day as Tag Day to encourage all pet owners to tag or microchip their companion animals. Pet care is more than providing food, water and shelter. Pet care also includes tagging your pet. According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, about 1 million dogs and half a million cats are taken into U.S. animal shelters as strays each year. Sadly, only 15 percent of those dogs and 2 percent of those cats are reunited with their owners.”

National Pigeon Day – Saturday, June 13, 2009
“The New York Bird Club cordially invites you to participate in the Second Annual National Pigeon Day Celebration on Saturday, June 13th from Noon to 4 p.m. on Pilgrim Hill in Central Park in New York City. This event is a celebration of pigeons and a time to give thanks to pigeons for the joy they bring us each day of the year – their sweet faces, cooing voices and majestic waddle lift our spirits amid the bustle of city life.”

Taking Action for Animals – July 24-27, 2009
“The fifth annual Taking Action for Animals conference will be held July 24-27, 2009, in Arlington, Virginia. Learn how to plan effective campaigns, walk the halls of Congress to lobby your federal legislators on animal protection issues, and hear from speakers such as HSUS president and CEO Wayne Pacelle, comedian and author Carol Leifer, and Colorado State University professor and bioethicist Dr. Bernard Rollin.”

About

The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy action alerts, campaign updates, carnivals, contests, newsletters, petitions, upcoming events and miscellaneous resources.

While my primary focus is non-human animals and the environment in which they live, I will cover human rights issues as well, especially as they relate to animal and environmental welfare. (For example, while reproductive rights is typically seen as a feminist or women’s issue, the growing global human population does have environmental consequences. In this vein, access to family planning resources has a tangible impact on the environment – an environment we share with non-human animals.)

This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!

If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included above. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources above; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.

If you’d like to get on the above organizations’ e-mail lists, I’ve compiled a full list of all my resources on the Get Active! page.
