Animal Rights @ Change .org: Dancing Star Sanctuary: Have the Rescuers Become Unnecessary Killers?
Please read about the misuse of funds at the Dancing Star Sanctuary in California, and then write to the California Attorney General’s office and IRS in order to request that they open an investigation. Additional information can be found in the post’s comments thread.

Animals Australia: Demand an End to Duck Shooting
“The VIC government—against scientific advice and the advice of its own Department of Sustainability and Environment—has announced that it will permit a recreational duck shooting season this year. This decision is reprehensible. Duck shooting has been acknowledged as a cruel, unsustainable ‘blood sport’ and has been banned in Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland. Despite this, the Victorian government has given shooters a green light to further decimate remaining waterbird populations in the state. Victoria is in its 13th year of drought and waterbird numbers in Eastern Australia have dropped by 82% over the past two decades. [...] Please join us and other Australians to express your outrage to the Victorian Environment Minister, Gavin Jennings, and call on him to ban duck shooting immediately.”

Born Free USA: You Can End the “Pet” Primate Trade
“Just moments ago the United States House of Representatives passed the Captive Primate Safety Act (H.R. 80) by an overwhelming vote of 323-95. This legislation, championed by Born Free USA, prohibits the import, export, and interstate commerce in nonhuman primates if they are going to be kept as “pets.” The swift House action comes in the wake of the Travis the chimpanzee tragedy in Connecticut, where a pet chimpanzee attacked a 55-year-old woman and was shot by police as a result. Now, you can help us ensure swift action in the US Senate so the bill becomes the law of the land this year.”

CREDO Action: Tell the Power Companies: Invest In Clean Power, Not Coal
“Major power companies and their supporters in Washington are telling Americans that coal is the future of affordable energy. But acid rain, increased greenhouse gas emissions, dangerous coal mining, mercury pollution, increased asthma and human health problems, and serious groundwater pollution are costs that no one can afford. There simply is no such thing as ‘clean coal.’”

Earthjustice: Protect America’s Waters — The Clean Water Restoration Act
“Since passed by Congress in 1972, the Clean Water Act has protected our nation’s lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands from unregulated pollution and destruction. Today, however—because of two Supreme Court rulings—many water bodies are being denied the Act’s protections against pollution. [...] Act now to ensure revitalized protections for our national waters. Ask your members of Congress to serve as original cosponsors of the Clean Water Restoration Act this Congress.”

Kinship Circle: 2/23/09: Wired To Be Wild – Primates Aren’t Pets
“Once again, the Captive Primate Safety Act (H.R. 80) has been introduced in Congress. This federal legislation bans interstate trade in nonhuman primates for the exotic pet industry. Ask your Representative on Capitol Hill to cosponsor H.R. 80. Ask your Senators to introduce a companion bill.”

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Tell the Energy Department to save money and energy by strengthening lighting efficiency standards
“A new lighting standard could save energy and money and reduce global warming pollution. Urge the new leaders at the Department of Energy to strengthen the proposed lamp standards and close loopholes left behind by the Bush administration.”

PETA: Urge Grand Island, Nebraska, and Odessa, Texas, Officials to Stop Cruelly Poisoning Birds
“PETA’s offices are being inundated with calls and e-mails from compassionate Nebraska and Texas residents who are concerned about the reported use of the notorious avicide DRC-1339 to destroy birds in and around the cities of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Odessa, Texas. Allegedly, Grand Island has been poisoning starlings every winter for years and plans to continue doing so until their populations have been decimated. Meanwhile, the city of Odessa is using poison to kill hundreds of grackles living near Music City Mall.”

Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health (PRCH): Tell President Obama to defund abstinence-only sexuality education programs.
“President Obama will release his first budget this Thursday, February 26. For the past eight years, the federal government has increased funding for abstinence-only sexuality education programs. Such programs were proven ineffective — and even dangerous — for teen’s health. President Obama has the opportunity to protect our teens. Age-appropriate, medically accurate comprehensive sexuality education has been shown to reduce unintended pregnancy and rates of STD contraction. Make sure the federal budget includes comprehensive sexuality education and defunds abstinence-only programs.”

The Sierra Club: Protect Borderlands from the Border Wall
“The U.S.-Mexico borderlands region contains a large number of Wilderness Areas, National Parks, National Monuments, National Wildlife Refuges and National Forests. But the border wall threatens these valuable pieces of America’s wild legacy and the communities living in the region. As the U.S. economy struggles, the Department of Homeland Security is still pushing ahead with costly border wall construction. The border wall cuts through critical wildlife corridors, hinders economic growth and destroys cultural sites. Urge new Department of Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano to suspend border wall construction and to review the entire border wall project!”

Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA): America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act
“America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act seeks to serve the public interest by permanently protecting more than 9 million acres of wilderness-quality land in Utah. The proposal, based on an exhaustive field inventory conducted by citizen volunteers, was first introduced in Congress by former Utah Representative Wayne Owens in 1989. Representative Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) assumed the role of House sponsor in 1993 and Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) introduced the Senate version in 1997. With each new Congress (every two years), the bill has been reintroduced with steadily increasing bipartisan support. The 111th Congress represents a real opportunity to gather the support and momentum needed to hold congressional hearings and ultimately pass America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act.”

World Wildlife Fund (WWF): Protect Walruses, Whales and Polar Bears From Offshore Drilling
“Walruses, whales, an estimated one-fifth of the world’s polar bear population, and hundreds of thousands of migratory birds depend on the pristine and icy waters of the Beaufort and Chukchi seas, off the northern coast of Alaska. Yet, despite the presence of these outstanding and vulnerable marine resources, the federal government is moving forward with plans to lease a vast area — 73 million acres — within these seas for offshore oil and gas development. Oil rigs could be in place within just a few years.”

Upcoming Events

Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF): National Justice for Animals Week, February 22 – 28, 2009
“Animal victims of abuse cannot speak for themselves—so concerned citizens and our legal system must speak up for them. That’s why the Animal Legal Defense Fund has created National Justice for Animals Week—an annual event that will be dedicated to raising public awareness nationwide about how to report animal abuse—and how to work within your community to create stronger laws and assure tough enforcement. February 22 – 28 marks ALDF’s first-ever National Justice for Animals Week.”

Spay Day USA – February 24, 2009
“The fifteenth annual Spay Day USA, started by the Doris Day Animal League in 1995, takes place on February 24, 2009. Throughout the United States, the entire month of February is designated as Spay/Neuter Month. Spay Day USA is America’s first and ONLY national day of action to promote the spaying or neutering of pets. During Spay Day USA’s first thirteen years, participants spayed or neutered more than 1,386,000 animals!”

Animal Aid: End Primate Experiments – Day of Action, Saturday, February 28, 2009
“After 20 years, the EU law that governs animal testing across Europe and the UK is being revised. European Directive 86/609 EEC, which applies to animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes, is the legal template on which all EU member states base their national laws. In the UK, the relevant law is the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.Sadly, this Directive does not include an independent enquiry into the scientific reliability of animal experiments, nor does it offer a total ban – something to which Animal Aid is committed unequivocally.”

Capitol Climate Action: March 2, 2009 in Washington, D.C.
“On March 2, join thousands of people in a multi-generational act of civil disobedience at the Capitol Power Plant — a plant that powers Congress with dirty energy and symbolizes a past that cannot be our future. Let’s use this as a rallying cry for a clean energy economy that will protect the health of our families, our climate, and our future.”

The Great American Meatout – March 20, 2009
“On (or around) March 20 — the first day of spring — thousands of caring people in all 50 U.S. states and two dozen other countries get active to host educational Meatout events. Activities include colorful festivals, lectures, public dinners, feed-ins, cooking demos, food samplings, leafleting, information tables and more.”

Earth Hour 2009 – March 28, 2009
“Mark your calendar and plan to join millions of people around the world in turning off the lights at 8:30 p.m., March 28, 2009, for one hour—Earth Hour—to raise awareness and take action to fight climate change. U.S. activists: Turn your action into something even bigger! Push your federal and state elected officials to shut off their lights and to take strong action to fight climate change.”

American Humane Association (AHA): Every Day Is Tag Day – April 4, 2009
“The American Humane Association celebrates every day as Tag Day to encourage all pet owners to tag or microchip their companion animals. Pet care is more than providing food, water and shelter. Pet care also includes tagging your pet. According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, about 1 million dogs and half a million cats are taken into U.S. animal shelters as strays each year. Sadly, only 15 percent of those dogs and 2 percent of those cats are reunited with their owners.”

National Pigeon Day – Saturday, June 13, 2009
“The New York Bird Club cordially invites you to participate in the Second Annual National Pigeon Day Celebration on Saturday, June 13th from Noon to 4 p.m. on Pilgrim Hill in Central Park in New York City. This event is a celebration of pigeons and a time to give thanks to pigeons for the joy they bring us each day of the year – their sweet faces, cooing voices and majestic waddle lift our spirits amid the bustle of city life.”

Taking Action for Animals – July 24-27, 2009
“The fifth annual Taking Action for Animals conference will be held July 24-27, 2009, in Arlington, Virginia. Learn how to plan effective campaigns, walk the halls of Congress to lobby your federal legislators on animal protection issues, and hear from speakers such as HSUS president and CEO Wayne Pacelle, comedian and author Carol Leifer, and Colorado State University professor and bioethicist Dr. Bernard Rollin.”

About

The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy action alerts, campaign updates, carnivals, contests, newsletters, petitions, upcoming events and miscellaneous resources.

While my primary focus is non-human animals and the environment in which they live, I will cover human rights issues as well, especially as they relate to animal and environmental welfare. (For example, while reproductive rights is typically seen as a feminist or women’s issue, the growing global human population does have environmental consequences. In this vein, access to family planning resources has a tangible impact on the environment – an environment we share with non-human animals.)

This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!

If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included above. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources above; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.

If you’d like to get on the above organizations’ e-mail lists, I’ve compiled a full list of all my resources on the Get Active! page.
