Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF): DO YOU BELIEVE ANIMALS DESERVE BASIC LEGAL RIGHTS?
“Deprived of legal protection, animals are defenseless against exploitation and abuse by humans. Through the Animal Bill of Rights, the Animal Legal Defense Fund is working to show Congress a groundswell of support for legislation that protects animals and recognizes that, like all sentient beings, animals are entitled to basic legal rights in our society. More than a quarter-million Americans have already signed the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s Animal Bill of Rights. Sign on your support and speak out to your lawmakers today!”
CREDO Action: Tell Attorney General Holder: Karl Rove must testify.
“On February 23, Karl Rove was supposed to testify before the House Judiciary Committee in accordance with a Congressional subpoena. But Rove didn’t show up. Again. [...] Sign this petition today to tell Attorney General Eric Holder take swift action to compel Karl Rove to comply with Congressional subpoenas. The American people deserve better than smoke and mirrors – we deserve the truth.”
DawnWatch: Chimp attack drives Captive Primate Safety Act — 2/26/09
“I have been off DawnWatch for a few weeks and am so glad to be back. During the time I was in the Midwest, and then playing catch-up, we all heard about the attack of a chimpanzee named Travis on a woman named Charla Nash. The woman lost most of her face, including both eyes. Travis, an adolescent male who had been a television star as a toddler, was shot dead. He was cremated yesterday.”
In Defense of Animals (IDA): Please Contact Your U.S. Senators And Ask Them To Support The Captive Primate Safety Act
“The recent incident in which a woman was severely mauled by a pet chimpanzee and the chimp was shot and killed is just one example of how dangerous primates can be. We can’t undo the damage, but we can take action to prevent these situations and protect primates who belong in the wild – not in the pet trade.”
Indict Bush Now: Demand the indictment of Bush & Co. for their criminal CIA programs!
“We are urging all IndictBushNow members to send an email immediately to your elected officials (it only takes a second), telling them that Bush administration officials broke the law when they promoted a system of torture, secret prisons, and extraordinary renditions. Like millions of other people in the United States, we insist that George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and other high officials be indicted and prosecuted for their criminal actions.”
PETA: Tell the U.S. Navy: No Dolphin Guards!
“The U.S. Navy is proposing a new security system at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor in Washington State, which would use Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions to guard the base’s waterfront. As described in a recent news article, dolphins with strobe lights attached to their noses would be used to identify the location of intruders so that security guards could then subdue them, and sea lions would clamp cuffs around the legs of “suspicious swimmers” who would then be reeled in for questioning.”
PETA: Urge Mission Viejo, Calif., Neighborhood to Stop Poisoning Wildlife!
“PETA’s office is being inundated with calls and e-mails from horrified residents of Mission Viejo’s Califia neighborhood regarding the alleged use of poisoned bait traps to control unwanted wildlife populations. Residents are reportedly finding bodies of poisoned raccoons and opossums throughout the neighborhood. The use of poison to manage perceived conflicts with wildlife is exceptionally cruel. The most common poisons on the market cause convulsions, vomiting, internal bleeding, gradual cardiac collapse, and a variety of other reactions that result in immense suffering and a slow, painful death.”
PETA: Sign the Petition: Stop More Animals From Suffering at the Manila Zoo
“Animals at the Manila Zoo are housed in cramped, barren cages that can’t compare to their natural habitats. Many of the species housed at the Manila Zoo roam territories of hundreds of kilometers in the wild, but the entire Manila Zoo measures only 0.055 square kilometers. Many animals are exhibiting neurotic behavior, such as constant pacing, swaying their heads, and walking in small circles. Because of the lack of funding and resources, the zoo’s infrastructure has deteriorated and conditions for animals have grown steadily worse.”
Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM): Help End the Use of Live Pigs for Trauma Training at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey
“While more than 90 percent of United States and Canadian facilities no longer use animals for ATLS training, University Hospital in Newark, part of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), continues to use live pigs for its course, despite the availability of nonanimal alternatives like the TraumaMan System from Simulab. The hospital’s next ATLS course is scheduled for March 13.”
Rainforest Action Network (RAN): Stop Palm Oil Expansion into Indonesia’s Peatlands
“The Indonesian government has recently announced that peatlands will be opened up for further palm oil expansion. Help make sure that ADM and Cargill don’t go along with the government’s plans. [...] Please send a letter to ADM and Cargill today demanding that they take a stand against peatland destruction in Indonesia. ADM and Cargill need to ensure that their plantations and suppliers stop converting natural forests to plantations, resolve community conflicts and respect worker’s rights, ensure free, prior and informed consent of forest peoples or else cancel their contracts with these plantations and suppliers.”
The Sierra Club: Thank Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid for Moving Beyond Coal
“Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid made a historic announcement today. They have requested to end coal use at the Capitol Power Plant in Washington, D.C., thus making the Capitol coal-free. Please show your support for their decision and urge them to continue to support replacing coal with renewable and clean energy power.”
World Wildlife Fund (WWF): Your Signature Can Help Protect Malaysian Wildlife
“The Malaysian peninsula is home to some of the world’s most amazing wildlife, including Sumatran rhinos, Malayan tigers and Asian elephants. But these and many other species in the region are under increasing threat due to poaching and the demand for their body parts in the illegal wildlife trade.”

Upcoming Events
Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF): National Justice for Animals Week, February 22 – 28, 2009
“Animal victims of abuse cannot speak for themselves—so concerned citizens and our legal system must speak up for them. That’s why the Animal Legal Defense Fund has created National Justice for Animals Week—an annual event that will be dedicated to raising public awareness nationwide about how to report animal abuse—and how to work within your community to create stronger laws and assure tough enforcement. February 22 – 28 marks ALDF’s first-ever National Justice for Animals Week.”
Animal Aid: End Primate Experiments – Day of Action, Saturday, February 28, 2009
“After 20 years, the EU law that governs animal testing across Europe and the UK is being revised. European Directive 86/609 EEC, which applies to animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes, is the legal template on which all EU member states base their national laws. In the UK, the relevant law is the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.Sadly, this Directive does not include an independent enquiry into the scientific reliability of animal experiments, nor does it offer a total ban – something to which Animal Aid is committed unequivocally.”
Capitol Climate Action: March 2, 2009 in Washington, D.C.
“On March 2, join thousands of people in a multi-generational act of civil disobedience at the Capitol Power Plant — a plant that powers Congress with dirty energy and symbolizes a past that cannot be our future. Let’s use this as a rallying cry for a clean energy economy that will protect the health of our families, our climate, and our future.”
The Great American Meatout – March 20, 2009
“On (or around) March 20 — the first day of spring — thousands of caring people in all 50 U.S. states and two dozen other countries get active to host educational Meatout events. Activities include colorful festivals, lectures, public dinners, feed-ins, cooking demos, food samplings, leafleting, information tables and more.”
Earth Hour 2009 – March 28, 2009
“Mark your calendar and plan to join millions of people around the world in turning off the lights at 8:30 p.m., March 28, 2009, for one hour—Earth Hour—to raise awareness and take action to fight climate change. U.S. activists: Turn your action into something even bigger! Push your federal and state elected officials to shut off their lights and to take strong action to fight climate change.”
American Humane Association (AHA): Every Day Is Tag Day – April 4, 2009
“The American Humane Association celebrates every day as Tag Day to encourage all pet owners to tag or microchip their companion animals. Pet care is more than providing food, water and shelter. Pet care also includes tagging your pet. According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, about 1 million dogs and half a million cats are taken into U.S. animal shelters as strays each year. Sadly, only 15 percent of those dogs and 2 percent of those cats are reunited with their owners.”
Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF): Party Animals, Party to end puppy mills – Sunday, April 19, 2009
“The Humane Society Legislative Fund is excited to announce that our next round of Party Animals house parties will be Sunday, April 19, and will focus on putting an end to puppy mills.”

Procession starts at Noon – lineup 11 a.m. – in the Old Meat District in Greenwich Village where Little West 12th St., Gansevoort St., Greenwich St. & 9th Ave. converge. Endpoint for the Parade this year is Union Square Park (north end).”

About
The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy action alerts, campaign updates, carnivals, contests, newsletters, petitions, upcoming events and miscellaneous resources.
While my primary focus is non-human animals and the environment in which they live, I will cover human rights issues as well, especially as they relate to animal and environmental welfare. (For example, while reproductive rights is typically seen as a feminist or women’s issue, the growing global human population does have environmental consequences. In this vein, access to family planning resources has a tangible impact on the environment – an environment we share with non-human animals.)
This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!
If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included above. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources above; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.
If you’d like to get on the above organizations’ e-mail lists, I’ve compiled a full list of all my resources on the Get Active! page.
