Action Alerts

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): Help protect women’s health.
“In the waning days of his presidency, George W. Bush moved to undermine the ability of American women to get basic reproductive health services, including birth control and information about abortion. Late last week, President Obama acted to rescind Bush’s Heath Care Denial Rule. The 30-day public comment period on the Obama proposal starts on March 10. Now, the ACLU needs your help again to mobilize people all across the nation for a dramatic show of support. Send your public comments to the Department of Health and Human Services in support of rescinding the Health Care Denial Rule.”

Consumers Union: Don’t wait to clean up food safety!
“You’re fed up with our nation’s lax food safety, and your recent actions have made a difference! A good bill has just been introduced in the Senate that will begin reforming our outdated food safety system. Now we need your help to make it even stronger, and get it moving ASAP. [...] With your help, let’s make sure the bill is as effective as possible. FDA needs to be inspecting food production facilities at least once a year, and processors should be required to test their products for contaminants and report the results to the FDA. These changes will help prevent deadly outbreaks like we’ve just seen in peanut butter.”

Consumers Union: Did you experience an illness related to something you ate? Share your Story.
“Have you or a loved one become ill with food poisoning? We would like to hear your story. You are not alone — approximately one in four Americans acquire a food borne illness every year! For some people food poisoning has drastic consequences – each year some 325,000 are hospitalized and 5,000 people die.”

CREDO Action: Tell the Senate: Don’t cave to the banking industry.
“Congress has already given billions of dollars to the banking industry. But it has not yet passed relief for the millions of Americans who are losing their homes. Experts predict that one in six homeowners with a mortgage will be foreclosed on over the next four years. The way to help these Americans is to give bankruptcy judges the power to restructure mortgage loans. The banking industry has spent an exorbitant amount of money lobbying Congress to keep judges from getting that power.”

Farm Sanctuary: Is that a clone in the food supply?
“Animal cloning is ethically and morally unsound, and once cloned products have entered the market place, there is no turning back. The FDA has revealed little about the tremendous animal welfare implications of cloning, but according to studies, only five percent of cloning attempts are “successful” (even in the most optimistic scenario, no more than 20-30 percent of cloning attempts will succeed), and those animals who do survive commonly suffer from deformities, as well as heart, kidney and liver disorders. The surrogate mothers used in cloning research also suffer from fetal overgrowth, repeated surgeries and pregnancy complications that often result in death. Despite all of these facts and fierce opposition from consumers, animal protection, food safety and consumer advocacy groups, environmental organizations, and members of Congress, the FDA approved cloned animals and their products for the U.S. food supply in January 2008.”

Farm Sanctuary: Should your town be able to prohibit farm animal cruelty? Big Ag says no! [Oklahoma residents only]
“The more people learn about how farm animals are being cruelly treated on factory farms, the more they are saying “no more!” Now that citizens in Florida, Arizona and California have all passed ballot initiatives to ban inhumane confinement practices, factory farm interests are digging in against reform in other states. In Oklahoma, these factory farms have found a friend in Rep. Don Armes, whose House Bill 2151 would effectively destroy the rights of Oklahoma citizens to decide how farm animals are treated in their communities. [...] Don’t let industrial agriculture make its own rules. Tell your legislators to oppose HB 2151 and preserve your right to take democratic action.”

Farm Sanctuary: Illinois: It’s time to give farm animals room to stretch their limbs! [Illinois residents only]
“Farm animals all across the country are subjected to intensive confinement and crowded together so tightly that they can barely move. SB 1337, introduced by Sen. James A. DeLeo, would require that calves raised for veal, breeding pigs and egg-laying hens in Illinois be given the ability to stretch their limbs, lie down comfortably and turn around.”

Farm Sanctuary: Isn’t it time for California dairy farmers to stop cutting cows’ tails off? [California residents only]
“Many large-scale dairy producers routinely cut off a large portion of their cows’ tails. A bill has been introduced by Sen. Dean Florez to ban the cruel and unnecessary practice of tail docking in California, but the industry is telling your state senators to oppose the measure. Your voice is needed! [...] Don’t let industrial farming lobbyists stand in the way of this modest but important reform. Contact your state senator today to urge his or her support for SB 135!”

Farm Sanctuary: Maine: Keep Foie Gras Cruelty Out of Your State [Maine residents only]
“Maine Rep. Alan Casavant (D-Biddeford) has introduced LD 9, a bill to ban the production of foie gras — positioning the state to follow the lead of California and more than a dozen countries worldwide that already prohibit foie gras sales and/or production. [...] LD 9 is pending in the Maine Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee. Ask committee members to strongly support LD 9, Rep. Casavant’s bill to ban cruel foie gras production.”

firedoglake: Tell Congress: “No More Dough Till We Know Where It Goes!”
“Tell Congress that we need some answers about AIG, Citigroup, Bear Stearns and other banks that received bailout money. We’ll be delivering your comments personally to members of Congress next week.”

National Partnership for Women & Families: Comments to HHS: Rescind the ‘conscience’ regulation
“The ‘conscience’ regulation reinterprets existing laws to allow nearly any employee in a federally-funded health care setting who claims a religious objection to refuse to provide information, referrals, or access to a range of health care services including birth control. If not repealed, this regulation will dramatically reduce access to family planning information and health services, particularly for low-income women, because it elevates the rights of providers over those of patients.”

National Women’s Law Center: Help Rescind Bush’s Harmful Health and Human Services Regulation
“It’s official. The Obama Administration has taken the first steps to rescind the Department of Health and Human Services’ “midnight regulation” which undermines women’s access to vital health care services and information. But our work is not done yet. A 30-day public comment period begins today and it is important that the Administration receive overwhelming support for its plans to repeal this dangerous regulation. We’ve prepared sample comments to help ─ please comment today and let the Obama Administration know how important it is to rescind this unconscionable rule.”

The PEW Environmental Group: Tell the EPA: Efficient Cars Now
“Throughout his first few weeks in office, President Obama has demonstrated a firm commitment to tackling global warming. In fact, he’s already instructed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to review California’s request to regulate automobile tailpipe emissions of greenhouse gases. The EPA has now begun that review, which could give states the green light to implement a clean cars standard, the first-ever legal limits on global warming pollution from vehicles. Now the EPA is seeking public comments concerning this decision. This is an opportunity for YOU to make the case for state and federal standards that will ensure that cleaner, more efficient cars come to a showroom near you and that global warming pollution is reduced.”

The Sierra Club: It’s Time to Repower America with Renewable Energy
“Last month, President Obama’s economic recovery plan took the first step toward repowering America with renewable energy by providing critical investments for clean energy. Now we need a national commitment to renewable energy that will continue to rebuild our economy and help fight global warming. The American Renewable Energy Act (H.R. 890) will require utilities to generate 25 percent of their electricity from wind, solar, geothermal and other renewable energy sources. This will create jobs, save consumers money, and reduce global warming pollution. Congress is moving fast to put together climate and energy legislation. Make sure this critical policy is included by asking your representative to cosponsor the American Renewable Energy Act today.”

The Sierra Club: Congress: Help President Obama Rebuild & Renew America
“The Budget outline submitted to Congress by President Obama represents a blueprint for the fundamental change that Americans overwhelmingly voted for in November. The budget builds upon the clean energy and green infrastructure programs initiated through the landmark American Recovery and Reinvestment Act by committing America to the major, long-term investments we need to build the new energy economy. It directs critically needed resources to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy and provides significant funding boosts to all our nation’s Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Agencies. But perhaps most importantly the budget assumes revenues (beginning in 2012) from the auction of global warming pollution allowances under a federal cap-and-trade system — a signal that President Obama is seriously committed to working with Congress to pass strong, comprehensive climate and energy legislation as soon as possible.”

The Wilderness Society: Vote on wilderness expected soon. Help it pass!
“The House of Representatives may vote as early as this Wednesday on a monumental piece of legislation that would do wonders for wilderness protection. If passed, it will preserve 2 million acres of special lands throughout the nation. We expect the vote will be extremely close. It could all come down to your representative.”

Campaign Updates

PETA: UPDATE: New York Flea Market Agrees to Retire Birds to Sanctuary
“You may remember our recent action alert targeting Partners and Spade, a New York City flea market, regarding the confinement of as many as 50 finches in a display window. Partners and Spade have removed the birds from the window and have kindly agreed to find a new home for the animals. PETA has provided Partners and Spade with contact information for reputable bird sanctuaries, where these birds can live out the rest of their lives in an enriched and safe environment better suited to meet their needs. Please contact the owners of Partners and Spade and thank them for making the compassionate choice to place these animals in a sanctuary.”

Otherwise, hit up Goodwill for your clothing needs!

In Defense of Animals (IDA): The International Day of Action for Seals is March 15
“Each year hundreds of thousands of baby seals are brutally beat on the head and slaughtered, most often while still alive, on the eastern shores of Canada. It is not enough that populations of seals are suffering due to global warming and the lack of ice formations for them to give birth upon; mother seals also have to contend with sealers arriving to beat their pups to death. [...] We help us flood the US Ambassador to Canada and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper with letters in support of the Harb Bill. We also need to flood the EU Parliament with comments in support of an EU -wide ban on seal products.”

The Great American Meatout – Friday, March 20, 2009
“On (or around) March 20 — the first day of spring — thousands of caring people in all 50 U.S. states and two dozen other countries get active to host educational Meatout events. “Mark your calendar and plan to join millions of people around the world in turning off the lights at 8:30 p.m., March 28, 2009, for one hour—Earth Hour—to raise awareness and take action to fight climate change. U.S. activists: Turn your action into something even bigger! Push your federal and state elected officials to shut off their lights and to take strong action to fight climate change.”

Animal Aid: Horse Racing Awareness Week, Sunday, March 29 through Saturday, April 4, 2009
“Horse Racing Awareness Week takes place in the seven days leading up to the Grand National meeting in Aintree – a notoriously hazardous three-day event that has killed 35 horses over the last decade. Runners face unique problems in the flagship race, including the proximity of a large, noisy crowd; the number of animals taking part; and the nature of the fences. Most years there are fatalities. Animal Aid is calling for this punishing, brutal event to be banned. Please read on to find out how you can help raise awareness and aid our campaign.”

American Humane Association (AHA): Every Day Is Tag Day – Saturday, April 4, 2009
“The American Humane Association celebrates every day as Tag Day to encourage all pet owners to tag or microchip their companion animals. Pet care is more than providing food, water and shelter. Pet care also includes tagging your pet. According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, about 1 million dogs and half a million cats are taken into U.S. animal shelters as strays each year. Sadly, only 15 percent of those dogs and 2 percent of those cats are reunited with their owners.”

Under the umbrella of the Green Generation, thousands of events are currently being planned in schools, communities, villages, towns and cities around the world. As in 2008, on April 19th Earth Day Network will celebrate Earth Day on the National Mall in Washington, DC, plus large-scale volunteer events in ten other US cities in partnership with Green Apple Festival. About

The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy action alerts, campaign updates, carnivals, contests, newsletters, petitions, upcoming events and miscellaneous resources.

While my primary focus is non-human animals and the environment in which they live, I will cover human rights issues as well, especially as they relate to animal and environmental welfare. (For example, while reproductive rights is typically seen as a feminist or women’s issue, the growing global human population does have environmental consequences. In this vein, access to family planning resources has a tangible impact on the environment – an environment we share with non-human animals.)

This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!

If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included above. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources above; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.

If you’d like to get on the above organizations’ e-mail lists, I’ve compiled a full list of all my resources on the Get Active! page.
