Action Alerts

Corporate Accountability International: Call on Fast Food Giants to Value [the] Meal
“Corporate Accountability International is building a movement challenging the fast food industry to stop interfering in the political process, preventing the public from knowing the health risks of fast food and bombarding our children with manipulative marketing. We believe everyone needs access to enough affordable, healthy food and the fast food industry’s abuses are a roadblock that, once removed, can ensure a healthier future for generations to come.”

Council for a Livable World (CLW): First Step Toward Nuclear Disarmament
“Last Friday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took the first critical steps toward the Obama Administration’s goal of a world free of nuclear weapons. Secretary Clinton met with Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss many issues. Following their meeting, Clinton and Lavrov promised to move forward quickly with negotiations on a successor to the START nuclear arms reduction treaty, a key pact for reducing U.S. and Russian nuclear stockpiles that expires this December. Council for a Livable World applauds this enormous step forward in our efforts to move toward a nuclear weapons free world, and urges the President to stay committed to a short-term goal of no more than 1,000 nuclear weapons each for the U.S. and Russia.”

Farm Sanctuary: This Bill Really Stinks
“A bill introduced by Sens. Charles Thune (R-ND) and Charles Schumer (D-NY) aims to exempt factory farms from the Clean Air Act and prevent the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from enacting a “cow tax” on the methane emissions generated by animal agriculture. [...] Don’t let livestock producers shirk their responsibility! Contact your U.S. senators today to let them know this bill stinks. Send a quick and easy e-mail telling them to vote NO on S. 527.”

Farm Sanctuary: Dismantling the Factory Farm: One State, One Step at a Time
“While the weather shifts from winter to spring, legislators around the country are running hot or cold on measures impacting the lives of farm animals. These bills, if enacted into law, would have a profound impact on industrial animal agriculture. It’s time to dismantle the factory farm, one step and one state at a time. Throughout the country, legislation is being introduced for farm animal protection, or, in some cases, to codify the cruel status quo. It’s up to you — the constituents — to see that our laws reflect our values of compassion, kindness and respect.”

PETA: Video Exposes Military’s Stabbing of Dogs
“PETA has received horrific torture videos that show live dogs who scream in pain while being stabbed and killed during combat-training exercises conducted by soldiers in the Bolivian military. The soldiers state that their instructors received training from the U.S. military in how to conduct these exercises, and the training partnership is corroborated by a written agreement signed by the two countries. [...] Read the letter that we sent to Bolivia’s president, Evo Morales. Then take action against these horrific practices. Please send a polite e-mail to Bolivia’s government urging it to end the military’s use of animals.”

PETA: Urge the USDA to Pull Dangerous Elephants Off the Road
“On Saturday, March 7, 2009, at least a dozen children and one adult were injured while waiting in line for elephant rides at the Murat Shrine Circus in Indianapolis, Indiana. Aggression between two elephants caused one elephant to knock over the stairs used to load waiting passengers. [...] Because of the abusive training that captive elephants endure, many suffer from severe physical and psychological distress. These large and powerful animals can and do put unsuspecting bystanders in harm’s way. Since 1990, rampages by captive elephants in the U.S. have resulted in 13 human deaths and 120 human injuries. To ensure the safety of the public and the elephants, it is important that these elephants be taken off the road. Please send polite letters to the USDA asking that it immediately remove Queenie, Tina, and Jewel from travel, performances, and rides.”

People’s Coalition on Food Sovereignty: Petition Letter: Violations of the Native Customary Right, Right to Land, and Right to Livelihood of Indigenous Groups in Sarawak
“Last April, I went on a fact finding mission to Sarawak, Malaysia, to witness first-hand the collusion between government officials and palm oil companies to push Indigenous communities off of their lands in order to grow more oil palm. I met with people who told me their homes had been destroyed by logging companies, that they were being intimidated and threatened by police and company officials, and that they had been promised compensation that never materialized. I also had the opportunity to participate in a meeting with 150 Indigenous leaders who shared similar stories from their own communities. Based on this report, the People’s Coalition for Food Sovereignty has posted an online petition calling on Malaysian officials to protect the land rights and right to livelihood of Indigenous groups in Sarawak. Please take a moment to sign the petition and ask your friends to sign, as well.”

Piyara Kutta on Change .org: Put and end to the mass killing of street dogs.
“I am starting a email campaign directed towards the government of the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. We will be making a plea on behalf of our partner organization, The Himalayan Nature Society, to put a stop to the mass killing of street dogs and ask the government for their assistance in moving toward building a sustained, healthy population of dogs for the state.”

Plan USA: Ask President Obama to help girls worldwide
“In developing countries around the world millions of girls face daily discrimination. They cannot go to school. They are economically and sexually exploited. They are abandoned at birth. Why? Because they are girls. We know that every girl deserves equal education, legal rights and opportunities. Will you help by signing our petition urging President Obama to support three simple things that will help girls in developing nations?”

“WASHINGTON – This afternoon, the Senate voted to leave intact language in the Omnibus Appropriations bill (HR 1105) that authorizes the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Commerce to withdraw flawed Endangered Species Act regulations adopted by the Bush administration.”

“Gap Inc. invites you to “Give & Get”! When you shop in store at Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy and outlet stores March 12 – 15, you will receive 30 percent off your total purchase and WWF will receive 5 percent*. Shoppers helped raise over $870,000 for WWF during Gap’s previous two Give & Get events–and YOU can help us receive even more this time!” If you received a gift card to these stores of x-mas (I did), now might be a good time to spend it. Otherwise, hit up Goodwill for your clothing needs!

In Defense of Animals (IDA): The International Day of Action for Seals is March 15
“Each year hundreds of thousands of baby seals are brutally beat on the head and slaughtered, most often while still alive, on the eastern shores of Canada. It is not enough that populations of seals are suffering due to global warming and the lack of ice formations for them to give birth upon; mother seals also have to contend with sealers arriving to beat their pups to death. [...] We help us flood the US Ambassador to Canada and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper with letters in support of the Harb Bill. We also need to flood the EU Parliament with comments in support of an EU -wide ban on seal products.”

The Great American Meatout – Friday, March 20, 2009

“Mark your calendar and plan to join millions of people around the world in turning off the lights at 8:30 p.m., March 28, 2009, for one hour—Earth Hour—to raise awareness and take action to fight climate change. U.S. activists: Turn your action into something even bigger! Push your federal and state elected officials to shut off their lights and to take strong action to fight climate change.”

Animal Aid: Horse Racing Awareness Week, Sunday, March 29 through Saturday, April 4, 2009
“Horse Racing Awareness Week takes place in the seven days leading up to the Grand National meeting in Aintree – a notoriously hazardous three-day event that has killed 35 horses over the last decade. Runners face unique problems in the flagship race, including the proximity of a large, noisy crowd; the number of animals taking part; and the nature of the fences. Most years there are fatalities. Animal Aid is calling for this punishing, brutal event to be banned. Please read on to find out how you can help raise awareness and aid our campaign.”

American Humane Association (AHA): Every Day Is Tag Day – Saturday, April 4, 2009
“The American Humane Association celebrates every day as Tag Day to encourage all pet owners to tag or microchip their companion animals. Pet care is more than providing food, water and shelter. Pet care also includes tagging your pet. According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, about 1 million dogs and half a million cats are taken into U.S. animal shelters as strays each year. Sadly, only 15 percent of those dogs and 2 percent of those cats are reunited with their owners.”

With negotiations for a new global climate agreement coming up in December, Earth Day 2009 must be a day of action and civic participation, to defend the Green Generation’s core principles. Under the umbrella of the Green Generation, thousands of events are currently being planned in schools, communities, villages, towns and cities around the world. As in 2008, on April 19th Earth Day Network will celebrate Earth Day on the National Mall in Washington, DC, plus large-scale volunteer events in ten other US cities in partnership with Green Apple Festival. About

The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy action alerts, campaign updates, carnivals, contests, newsletters, petitions, upcoming events and miscellaneous resources.

While my primary focus is non-human animals and the environment in which they live, I will cover human rights issues as well, especially as they relate to animal and environmental welfare. (For example, while reproductive rights is typically seen as a feminist or women’s issue, the growing global human population does have environmental consequences. In this vein, access to family planning resources has a tangible impact on the environment – an environment we share with non-human animals.)

This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!

If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included above. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources above; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.

If you’d like to get on the above organizations’ e-mail lists, I’ve compiled a full list of all my resources on the Get Active! page.
