Action Alerts

Center for Biological Diversity: 60 Days to Save the Polar Bear
“Last week Congress passed — and President Obama signed into law — a bill giving Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar the authority to immediately rescind Bush administration regulations that eliminate essential protections for the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act. However, under the bill, if Salazar doesn’t withdraw the Bush regulations within 60 days, the regulations stay in effect and the polar bear is deprived of the legal protections it needs to survive. Secretary Salazar must act immediately, or we’ll lose this precious opportunity to instantly remedy one of Bush’s worst environmental attacks. Please sign the petition to Salazar and demand that he immediately rescind the Bush regulations harming the polar bear.”

DawnWatch: NY Times covers tonight’s HBO premiere of “Death on a Factory Farm” 3/16/09
“Last week I sent out an alert about a documentary premiering tonight, Monday March 16, on HBO, titled ‘Death on a Factory Farm.” It covers the undercover investigation of horrifying abuse at an Ohio pig farm and the resulting animal cruelty case. The DawnWatch alert with all the information is on line at tinyurl.com/dz6z4f. For such a film to be aired on major popular media such as HBO is truly groundbreaking. The good news today is its coverage in the New York Times. There is a television review, by Mike Hale, titled ‘How These Piggies Went to Market.’”

Farm Sanctuary: Downed Animal Protection – No Downers Campaign
“The USDA closed a loophole and banned downed cattle from being slaughtered and entering the human food supply. While this step is a milestone in efforts to protect those animals too sick and injured to walk, or even stand, protections need to be expanded to all species. Help continue this momentum.”

Humane Society of the United States (HSUS): ASK YOUR MEMBER OF CONGRESS TO END HORSE SLAUGHTER
“With a new Congress, we have an amazing opportunity to make this the year to finally ban the cruel transport of horses for slaughter for human consumption on U.S. soil as well as in other countries. Almost as many American horses were sent to slaughter in 2008 as in 2007, making the passage of federal legislation to ban slaughter more urgent than ever. The Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2009 (H.R. 503) will prevent the slaughter of American horses for human consumption — here and in other countries. It is critical that you weigh in with your federal legislators to let them know you want horse slaughter stopped as soon as possible. Ask your Representative to co-sponsor and vote in favor of H.R. 503.”

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Support the Great Ape Protection Act
“On March 5, the Great Ape Protection Act was reintroduced in the House of Representatives. This landmark bill would ban invasive experiments on chimpanzees as well as breeding. IDA has been working for this since 1993.”

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Primates as Pets – Please Contact Your U.S. Senators
“The Captive Primate Safety Act (H.R. 80 in the House, no number yet in the Senate) – will prohibit interstate commerce in primates as pets.” Please ask your senators to vote for this legislation.

In Defense of Animals (IDA): Demand USDA Rescue Elephants Tina, Jewel, Queenie
“For several years, IDA has been advocating for the confiscation of three abused circus elephants from their handler, Will Davenport, who federal authorities have documented flagrantly and repeatedly violating federal law. On March 7, 2009, these elephants -Tina, Jewel and Queenie – were involved in an accident that injured a dozen children waiting for elephant rides at the Shrine Circus in Indianapolis.”

In Defense of Animals (IDA): HR 503 – Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act
“The Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2009 (H.R. 503) is back on the legislative calendar, after moving through the Judiciary Committee with bipartisan approval in the last Congressional session. Please help pass this measure to ban the possession, shipping, transporting, purchasing, selling, delivering or receiving of a horse or horseflesh for human consumption.”

Kinship Circle: 3/13/09: Unchain Tina, Jewel And Queenie
“When will the USDA finally seize Tina, Jewel and Queenie to retire them to a sanctuary? Please facilitate their reprieve from chains and bullhooks — and protect the public from captive elephant rampages. In addition, I urge you to revoke Will Davenport’s USDA exhibitor license. Davenport was ordered out the City of Los Angeles in April 2008, due to his history of animal cruelty. In 2007 Tina and Jewel were so underweight, the USDA took them off the travel circuit. Presently, the USDA is investigating the Davenport family for violations of the Animal Welfare Act. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is looking into their alleged breach of the federal Endangered Species Act.”

National Wildlife Federation (NWF): Make Sure Your Representative Helps Historic Public Lands Protections Become Law
“On March 11, 2009, the U.S. House failed to pass the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act, which secures wilderness designation for more than two million acres in nine states, protects over a thousand miles of rushing rivers and provides permanent protection for the 26-million acre National Landscape Conservation System. Despite the failed outcome of last week’s vote, in the coming days the U.S. House will have another opportunity to pass these historic protections. Find out how your representative voted on this landmark legislation and then send him/her a message of encouragement to help ensure these historic protections finally become law.”

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Speak out to ban unregulated imported swordfish
“The Marine Mammal Protection Act bans fish imported from foreign countries whose fishing practices harm and kill more marine mammals than allowed by U.S. standards, but the law is not being enforced. Urge the National Marine Fisheries Service to ban imported swordfish until foreign fishing vessels employ the same measures to protect marine wildlife that are required of U.S. fishermen.”

Trouble the Water: 10,000 letters to Congress. 10,000 reasons to rebuild. What’s your story?
“With your help we’ve delivered more than 10,000 letters to members of Congress demanding they take action and rebuild the communities devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Congress won’t act unless we continue to remind them that real lives are affected and at stake. It’s not just a Gulf Coast issue, it’s an American issue – and it effects us all. Let’s make sure that Congress hears the message loud and clear. Tell us your story. We’ll post some of the best stories on our website and use them in the campaign to build support for those still fighting to return, recover and rebuild. What’s your story? Why does rebuilding the gulf states matter to you? Were you affected by Katrina personally? How did “Trouble the Water” affect you? Why did you decide to write Congress?”

Campaign Updates

HSUS / Wayne Pacelle: Case Finally Closed on “Downers” Loophole
“It’s been a long fight, and today, we closed another chapter on it. Since the mid-1990s, The HSUS has been working hard to stop as a matter of public policy the abuse of downer cattle—animals too sick or injured to walk. And today, President Obama himself announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture was officially putting a stop to non-ambulatory cattle being mishandled in order to get them into slaughter plants. He made the announcement along with two top selections for the Food and Drug Administration and a series of other statements about food safety.”

Animal Aid: Horse Racing Awareness Week, Sunday, March 29 through Saturday, April 4, 2009
“Horse Racing Awareness Week takes place in the seven days leading up to the Grand National meeting in Aintree – a notoriously hazardous three-day event that has killed 35 horses over the last decade. Runners face unique problems in the flagship race, including the proximity of a large, noisy crowd; the number of animals taking part; and the nature of the fences. Most years there are fatalities. Animal Aid is calling for this punishing, brutal event to be banned. Please read on to find out how you can help raise awareness and aid our campaign.”

American Humane Association (AHA): Every Day Is Tag Day – Saturday, April 4, 2009
“The American Humane Association celebrates every day as Tag Day to encourage all pet owners to tag or microchip their companion animals. Pet care is more than providing food, water and shelter. Pet care also includes tagging your pet. According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, about 1 million dogs and half a million cats are taken into U.S. animal shelters as strays each year. Sadly, only 15 percent of those dogs and 2 percent of those cats are reunited with their owners.”

About

The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy action alerts, campaign updates, carnivals, contests, newsletters, petitions, upcoming events and miscellaneous resources.

While my primary focus is non-human animals and the environment in which they live, I will cover human rights issues as well, especially as they relate to animal and environmental welfare. (For example, while reproductive rights is typically seen as a feminist or women’s issue, the growing global human population does have environmental consequences. In this vein, access to family planning resources has a tangible impact on the environment – an environment we share with non-human animals.)

This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!

If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included above. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources above; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.

If you’d like to get on the above organizations’ e-mail lists, I’ve compiled a full list of all my resources on the Get Active! page.
