All Creatures: Save the Geese of Ballwin, Missouri
“Ballwin geese, beware! A roundup of the sometimes bothersome birds, with the cooperation of the Missouri Department of Conservation, will start sometime after April 1. However, Ballwin Mayor Walt Young said he opposes the move, calling it a ’shotgun approach’ and contending the board ‘will regret this decision; it will be a big mistake if this happens.’”
Animal Person: Newsweek Editor Goes Vegan
“Did you see that Newsweek editor David Noonan went vegan (see “I Can’t Believe I’m Still a Vegan”)? He clearly needs a bit of encouragement as he finds it “sort of a pain in the ass. And kind of boring, too.” But congratulations to Noonan for doing it and writing about it and sticking with it! [...] Chime in, and because this article is in the magazine issue dated March 23, write a letter to letters [at] newsweek.com. Include your name, address and daytime phone number.”
DawnWatch: Fun Newsweek article, “I Can’t Believe I’m Still Vegan.” 3/23/09 edition
“There is a delightful article in the current, March 23, edition of Newsweek, by David Noonan, titled, “I Can’t Believe I’m Still a Vegan.” (Periscope, Pg 16.)”
Kinship Circle: 3/20/09: Stop Horse Slaughter Blitz At State/Federal Levels
Please take a moment to see whether your state has pro- or anti-horse slaughter legislation pending, and then use the tools provided to take action!
Kinship Circle: 3/20/09: Get Great Apes Out Of Laboratories
“The Great Ape Protection Act, HR 1326, is back on the legislative schedule. Please [tell your Congresspeople to] support this bill to ban experimentation on great apes.”
Kinship Circle: 3/20/09: End Live Labs At New Jersey Med School
“The University of Michigan Health System recently chose to use only simulated models for Advanced Trauma and Life Support (ATLS) courses. [Urge the] University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), to join U-M Medical school — along with more than 90% of U.S. and Canadian facilities that benefit from human-focused simulators alone.”
PETA: Demand an End to Brazil’s Bizarre Festival of Torture!
“Throughout March until Easter day, a twisted and sadistic “festival” known as Farra do Boi (translated as “Festival of the Ox”) takes place in Brazil. During this festival, countless oxen throughout the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina are horrifically and methodically tortured—just for “fun.” In the days before Farra do Boi begins, the oxen are starved; food and water are placed just out of the animals’ reach. The days-long festival begins when villagers release the oxen and chase, punch, kick, and attack the animals with sticks, knives, whips, stones, bamboo lances, ropes, and anything else they can get their hands on.” Note: the sample letter provided by PETA isn’t anywhere near as culturally insensitive as the action alert’s title suggests.
Rainforest Action Network (RAN): Tell TVA to Take Responsibility for Toxic Coal Spills!
“The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is the biggest consumer of coal in the United States and last Christmas residents living near the TVA Kingston Steam Plant were flooded with approximately 1.6 billion gallons of coal waste after a retaining wall at the facility failed. The spill was 40 times the size of the Exxon Valdez, has caused severe health problems, and polluted the water and the air quality throughout the region. So far the TVA hasn’t taken full responsibility for the spill and another could happen at any time.”
The Sierra Club: Congress: Pass a Budget that Ensures Our Clean Energy Future!
“President Obama has asked that the federal budget rebuild and renew our economy. Please contact your members of Congress today and urge them to pass a budget that reflects President Obama’s priorities of creating millions of new green jobs, tackling climate change and ending oil dependence.”
Striking at the Roots: Stand Up for Rabbits This Easter
“This is a great time of year to talk about rabbits. They do make wonderful companions, but they are not for everyone. Alternatives to live rabbits as Easter gifts include chocolate bunnies (preferably vegan, of course), stuffed animals and books. If you know of anyone who plans to bring home a rabbit this Easter ― or any time of the year ― please encourage them to learn about rabbits and rabbit care. (I highly recommend Stories Rabbits Tell by Susan Davis and Margo DeMello.) If they still want a rabbit, urge them to adopt from a shelter or rabbit-rescue organization.”

Animal Aid: Horse Racing Awareness Week, Sunday, March 29 through Saturday, April 4, 2009
“Horse Racing Awareness Week takes place in the seven days leading up to the Grand National meeting in Aintree – a notoriously hazardous three-day event that has killed 35 horses over the last decade. Runners face unique problems in the flagship race, including the proximity of a large, noisy crowd; the number of animals taking part; and the nature of the fences. Most years there are fatalities. Animal Aid is calling for this punishing, brutal event to be banned. Please read on to find out how you can help raise awareness and aid our campaign.”
American Humane Association (AHA): Every Day Is Tag Day – Saturday, April 4, 2009
“The American Humane Association celebrates every day as Tag Day to encourage all pet owners to tag or microchip their companion animals. Pet care is more than providing food, water and shelter. Pet care also includes tagging your pet. According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, about 1 million dogs and half a million cats are taken into U.S. animal shelters as strays each year. Sadly, only 15 percent of those dogs and 2 percent of those cats are reunited with their owners.”

And Expo will again have all your favorite features, like the Meet and Greet, the Brain Bank, and more!”
Amnesty International: Demand Accountability for Torture and Abuse Now! Congressional In-District Lobby Weeks, Monday, April 6 through Friday, April 17, 2009
Obama’s latest move on detainees reveals an administration unwilling to change Bush counter-terrorism policies. Register today to meet with your Senators and Representatives during the weeks of April 6 – 17. This past weekend we got a deeply troubling glimpse into the heart of the Obama administration’s counter-terrorism policies. On Friday, in a symbolic break with the past, the Obama administration announced it would drop the term “enemy combatant” – only to argue in the same breath that the administration has the legal authority to hold detainees indefinitely, without charge. We’re beginning to fear the worst: that the Obama administration will hold onto the failed counter-terrorism policies of the Bush administration. Such a move would solidify and make indefinite detention and other Bush policies the new norm in America. Our most powerful antidote to these cancerous counter-terrorism policies is a full investigation that includes holding those responsible accountable. While your Members of Congress are at home during the April recess, meet with them and push them for an independent investigation.”
In Defense of Animals (IDA): World Week for Animals in Laboratories (WWAIL) – Saturday, April 18 through Sunday, April 26
“Please join In Defense of Animals during World Week for Animals in Laboratories (WWAIL), April 18-26, to speak out against the abhorrent use of animals in testing and research. With a new administration and a serious financial crisis at hand, it is more important than ever that we use this week to call attention to the outdated and unnecessary biomedical experiments that continue to claim the lives of millions of animals each year. This year, there is more hope than ever, as technology moves us beyond antiquated animal experiments and government reports, agencies and scientists have begun to acknowledge not only the need to move away from animal research, but also the flaws in the National Institutes of Health’s grant-funding system.”
Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF): Party Animals, Party to end puppy mills – Sunday, April 19, 2009
“The Humane Society Legislative Fund is excited to announce that our next round of Party Animals house parties will be Sunday, April 19, and will focus on putting an end to puppy mills.”
Earth Day – Wednesday, April 22, 2009
“Earth Day 2009, April 22, will mark the beginning of the Green Generation Campaign! This two-year initiative will culminate with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day in 2010. With negotiations for a new global climate agreement coming up in December, Earth Day 2009 must be a day of action and civic participation, to defend the Green Generation’s core principles. Under the umbrella of the Green Generation, thousands of events are currently being planned in schools, communities, villages, towns and cities around the world. As in 2008, on April 19th Earth Day Network will celebrate Earth Day on the National Mall in Washington, DC, plus large-scale volunteer events in ten other US cities in partnership with Green Apple Festival. Our partners in Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Beijing, and Manila, among others, are planning large events where everyone can participate. Find an event or activity near you!”

About
The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy action alerts, campaign updates, carnivals, contests, newsletters, petitions, upcoming events and miscellaneous resources.
While my primary focus is non-human animals and the environment in which they live, I will cover human rights issues as well, especially as they relate to animal and environmental welfare. (For example, while reproductive rights is typically seen as a feminist or women’s issue, the growing global human population does have environmental consequences. In this vein, access to family planning resources has a tangible impact on the environment – an environment we share with non-human animals.)
This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!
If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included above. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources above; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.
If you’d like to get on the above organizations’ e-mail lists, I’ve compiled a full list of all my resources on the Get Active! page.
