Action Alerts

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA): USA: Urge Senate to Pass Captive Primate Safety Act!
“On February 24, the Captive Primate Safety Act passed the U.S. House of Representatives and was introduced in the Senate. Please take a moment to contact your U.S. senators and ask them to support and cosponsor this important humane bill. When the 111th Congress convened, the Captive Primate Safety Act was among the first bills introduced. Although the Act passed the House of Representatives last year, it stalled in the Senate—and federal bills need to pass both chambers of Congress to become law. Since this is a new session of Congress, we now are back to square one. Please email your U.S. senators about this important legislation, even if you already did so in 2007 or 2008.”

Amnesty International: Make Detention Standards Enforceable and Use Alternatives to Detention!
“After being sworn in three months ago, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano issued a series of Action Directives designed to review and evaluate the five primary missions of the Department. Please write or call Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and urge her to address the current state of immigration detention by making meaningful use of alternatives to detention and by ensuring that conditions in detention are humane and meet international standards. Amnesty International is calling on the Department of Homeland Security to make U.S. immigration detention standards enforceable, and to use alternatives to detention in a meaningful way.”

Animals Rights & Change .org & SHARK: Stop Coke’s Sponsorship of Animal Abuse at Rodeos
“We have a very important update today and we need your help. Coca-Cola sponsors animal abuse and they are feeling the pressure from animal advocates, and we need to keep contacting them! The animals need you to make your voice heard at Coca-Cola…TODAY!”

CREDO Action: Tell Conservative Democrats: Don’t block progress.
“This could mean the end to meaningful legislation to combat global warming. This could block a real solution to healthcare. A small group of Democrats in the Senate, led by Evan Bayh of Indiana, are threatening key pillars of President Obama’s progressive agenda. The House “Blue Dog” Caucus has often stood against important progressive values, supporting causes from the war in Iraq to passing FISA. Now, a new group in the Senate — the “Moderate Dems Working Group” — is attempting to do the same thing.”

Green is the New Red: “Good Time Bill” Could Reduce Prison Times for Environmentalists and Animal Rights Activists
“The Good Time Bill (H.R. 1475) [...] will reduce the sentences of people in federal prisons by increasing the “good time” credit they can receive. The bill would impact all federal prisoners (except those serving life sentences), but Green Scare prisoners would be some of the ideal candidates. The bill was introduced last week, and has 11 cosponsors. It’s still early in the process, which makes it a great time to get involved and take action. Visit GoodTimeBill.info for a list of things you can do.”

Greenpeace: Tell Congress to keep limits on global warming pollution in the budget
“President Obama has presented his vision for the future to Congress, and it includes setting real limits on global warming emissions and moving America to a clean energy economy. By including action on climate in his proposed budget, the President has clearly signaled that he intends to fight hard for a serious global warming bill this year. But even he can’t win this fight on his own. Powerful forces from the coal, oil and gas industries are working behind the scenes to do everything in their power to make sure that Congress strips action on global warming out of the budget. They understand exactly what this will mean for their polluting industries. It’s a game changer. For the sake of our future and the planet, we cannot let them succeed.”

Humame Society of the United States (HSUS): Wisconsin: Help Ensure Justice for Family Pets Shot to Death!
“In late January, sheriffs deputies in Chippewa County, Wisc. discovered what they described as one of the worst animal cruelty cases they had ever seen: Raymond E. Knez allegedly came home one morning, rounded up the family pets and, one by one, shot them to death, reportedly in front of his own children. To date, Knez has been charged with multiple crimes, but he faces only misdemeanor animal cruelty charges for the deaths of his family’s six pets. Although Knez has only been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty, Wisconsin’s felony animal cruelty law clearly states that anyone who intentionally mistreats an animal, resulting in that animal’s death, is guilty of a class E Felony.”

International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW): Stop Iceland from killing endangered whales !
“Iceland’s Fisheries Minister Steingrímur J. Sigfússon is allowing 150 endangered fin whales and 100 minke whales to be cruelly killed; ignoring the tremendous economic benefit whale watching brings to the country and the world. Our friends at the Icelandic whale watching association, Icewhale, are worried that killing whales could also have a negative effect on their businesses. Apart from the unacceptable cruelty involved in whaling, during its economic crisis Iceland should be doing all it can to protect the whales it depends on for tourism. Please write to the Icelandic Fisheries Minister and tell him whales are worth more alive than dead.”

Madeleine Pickens: Stop the Mass Murder and Imprisoning of Thousands of Wild Horses & Burros; Contact Ken Salazar at the Bureau of Land Management
“Just two weeks ago, we received the surprise announcement that the million-acre sanctuary proposed for Madeleine Pickens for the 30,000 wild horses and burros held in captivity by US authorities has hit a snag. The National Wild Horse Foundation founded by Madeleine Pickens to help drive the proposal has been told by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) that federal land being considered for part of the sanctuary cannot be used because the government does not want wild horses in areas where they did not exist when the Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act was enacted.”

A roundup of pig-related news, as well as opportunities to pen a letter to the editor or two. From Farm Sanctuary.

NARAL: Urge Gov. Kaine to Veto Anti-Choice Bill
“Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine will soon decide whether to sign or veto a bill that would funnel thousands of dollars to fake clinics that mislead women about their options when faced with an unintended pregnancy. If signed into law, Virginia’s “Choose Life” license-plate legislation would direct funds so-called “crisis pregnancy centers” in the state. All crisis pregnancy centers have an anti-choice agenda, and many use deceptive, intimidating, and emotionally manipulative tactics to prevent women from making their own choices about abortion. We need pro-choice Americans nationwide to call on Gov. Kaine, who also serves as chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), to veto this anti-choice bill. Please fill out the form below to send him an email today.”

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC): Urge the Obama administration to cancel new oil and gas leases in the Polar Bear Seas, home to endangered polar bears and other imperiled wildlife.
“The wildlife of America’s Arctic — including polar bears, whales, and millions of migratory birds — is under threat once again from oil and gas drilling. Right now, the Minerals Management Service is considering the approval of oil and gas leases in over 73 million acres in Alaska’s Beaufort and Chukchi — also known as the Polar Bear Seas. Please tell the Obama administration you don’t support the giveaway of Arctic wilderness to oil and gas giants. If approved, an invasion of oil rigs could decimate the heart of critical habitat for polar bears and other Arctic wildlife.”

PETA: Tell Audemars Piguet to Stop Supporting Elephant Cruelty
“Venerable Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet is sponsoring Thailand’s 2009 King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament, an event in which riders gouge bullhooks into elephants’ sensitive skin to make them perform. The event also subjects many elephants to injuries when their massive and fragile bodies cannot handle the game’s swift and sudden movements. [...] Please use the form below to send an e-mail to Audemars Piguet executives and ask them to end their support of this cruel, barbaric, and disgraceful practice, which should have been abandoned long ago.”

PETA: URGENT: Birds Tangled, Dying in Netting on the Pennsylvania Turnpike!
“PETA’s office is being inundated with calls and e-mails from compassionate Pennsylvania residents who report that hawks, sparrows, pigeons, and other birds are dying in pigeon deterrent mesh under several overpasses along the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Apparently, the mesh appears to have been installed improperly and as a consequence, birds can still get past it but can’t find their way out! Some trapped birds have reportedly already suffered slow, miserable deaths because of stress, injury, dehydration, or starvation. PETA recently received a dire report that two young hawks had gotten tangled in the mesh while trying to get at some trapped pigeons, and a local fire department had to cut them free in order to save their lives. We immediately alerted Pennsylvania Turnpike officials to the grave and ongoing risks that this situation poses to birds and asked that they repair the mesh immediately, but so far, we have received no response.”

Planned Parenthood: This is our chance to protect women’s health.
“President Obama has begun the process of overturning the Bush administration rule that poses a grave threat to women’s health. By adding your name to our list and showing your support, we can all look forward to President Obama restoring the rights of patients to receive complete and accurate reproductive health information and services, without fear that health care providers will withhold vital information and services based on their personal biases.”

Public Citizen: Tell Congress About the AIG-Panama FTA Outrage!
“As if the recent American International Group (AIG) scandal wasn’t enough, we now know that AIG has the gall to sue the U.S. government, demanding over $306 million back in taxes it paid – twice the amount of the now infamous executive bonuses. At issue is Panama-based Starr International Company (SICO), AIG’s largest shareholder, whose chairman Maurice Greenberg is AIG’s former chair. The Panama FTA, a hangover NAFTA expansion deal negotiated by the Bush administration, would empower SICO, and other Panama-registered corporations with offshore ties, with even more opportunities for corporate abuse. The Panama FTA would grant companies like SICO expansive new rights to challenge U.S. public-interest regulations in foreign tribunals – to, um, demand taxpayer compensation for regulations that undermine their expected future profits.”

The Sierra Club: Thank the Obama Administration for Taking Action on Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining
“Over the past few weeks your emails, along with more than 40,000 others, have gone to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) asking them to protect streams, mountains, and Appalachian communities from a devastating onslaught of new mountaintop removal coal mining. Together we asked the Obama administration to prevent a flood of new mountaintop removal coal mining, and yesterday they showed us that they were listening. EPA has informed the Army Corps of Engineers that it is likely to deny a stream burial permit in West Virginia, and has raised concerns about a second permit in Kentucky. This action, along with Administrator Jackson’s statement directing the agency to closely review up to 200 additional mining requests, demonstrates this administration’s strong commitment to science and enforcing our nation’s environmental protections.”

The PETA Files: ‘Win It’ Wednesday: Humane Mouse Trap
“It’s almost spring, the time when a young mouse’s fancy turns to thoughts of love. Next thing you know, you may start hearing the pitter-patter of little mouse feet on your attic floorboards. Now, we know you would never want to hurt one of these cute little guys, but we can understand if some of you don’t want them setting up a love nest in your box of old LPs. That’s why we’re offering up three of our popular humane mousetraps for “Win It” Wednesday.” Kelly’s note: these traps are teh awesome!

Animal Aid: Horse Racing Awareness Week, Sunday, March 29 through Saturday, April 4, 2009
“Horse Racing Awareness Week takes place in the seven days leading up to the Grand National meeting in Aintree – a notoriously hazardous three-day event that has killed 35 horses over the last decade. Runners face unique problems in the flagship race, including the proximity of a large, noisy crowd; the number of animals taking part; and the nature of the fences. Most years there are fatalities. Animal Aid is calling for this punishing, brutal event to be banned. Please read on to find out how you can help raise awareness and aid our campaign.”

American Humane Association (AHA): Every Day Is Tag Day – Saturday, April 4, 2009
“The American Humane Association celebrates every day as Tag Day to encourage all pet owners to tag or microchip their companion animals. Pet care is more than providing food, water and shelter. Pet care also includes tagging your pet. According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, about 1 million dogs and half a million cats are taken into U.S. animal shelters as strays each year. Sadly, only 15 percent of those dogs and 2 percent of those cats are reunited with their owners.”

Animal Care Expo 2009 – Monday, April 6 through Thursday, April 9, 2009 in Las Vegas, NV

And Expo will again have all your favorite features, like the Meet and Greet, the Brain Bank, and more!”

Amnesty International: Demand Accountability for Torture and Abuse Now! Congressional In-District Lobby Weeks, Monday, April 6 through Friday, April 17, 2009
Obama’s latest move on detainees reveals an administration unwilling to change Bush counter-terrorism policies. Register today to meet with your Senators and Representatives during the weeks of April 6 – 17. This past weekend we got a deeply troubling glimpse into the heart of the Obama administration’s counter-terrorism policies. On Friday, in a symbolic break with the past, the Obama administration announced it would drop the term “enemy combatant” – only to argue in the same breath that the administration has the legal authority to hold detainees indefinitely, without charge. We’re beginning to fear the worst: that the Obama administration will hold onto the failed counter-terrorism policies of the Bush administration. Such a move would solidify and make indefinite detention and other Bush policies the new norm in America. Our most powerful antidote to these cancerous counter-terrorism policies is a full investigation that includes holding those responsible accountable. While your Members of Congress are at home during the April recess, meet with them and push them for an independent investigation.”

In Defense of Animals (IDA): World Week for Animals in Laboratories (WWAIL) – Saturday, April 18 through Sunday, April 26
“Please join In Defense of Animals during World Week for Animals in Laboratories (WWAIL), April 18-26, to speak out against the abhorrent use of animals in testing and research. With a new administration and a serious financial crisis at hand, it is more important than ever that we use this week to call attention to the outdated and unnecessary biomedical experiments that continue to claim the lives of millions of animals each year. This year, there is more hope than ever, as technology moves us beyond antiquated animal experiments and government reports, agencies and scientists have begun to acknowledge not only the need to move away from animal research, but also the flaws in the National Institutes of Health’s grant-funding system.”

Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF): Party Animals, Party to end puppy mills – Sunday, April 19, 2009
“The Humane Society Legislative Fund is excited to announce that our next round of Party Animals house parties will be Sunday, April 19, and will focus on putting an end to puppy mills.”

Under the umbrella of the Green Generation, thousands of events are currently being planned in schools, communities, villages, towns and cities around the world. As in 2008, on April 19th Earth Day Network will celebrate Earth Day on the National Mall in Washington, DC, plus large-scale volunteer events in ten other US cities in partnership with Green Apple Festival. About

The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy action alerts, campaign updates, carnivals, contests, newsletters, petitions, upcoming events and miscellaneous resources.

While my primary focus is non-human animals and the environment in which they live, I will cover human rights issues as well, especially as they relate to animal and environmental welfare. (For example, while reproductive rights is typically seen as a feminist or women’s issue, the growing global human population does have environmental consequences. In this vein, access to family planning resources has a tangible impact on the environment – an environment we share with non-human animals.)

This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!

If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included above. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources above; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.

If you’d like to get on the above organizations’ e-mail lists, I’ve compiled a full list of all my resources on the Get Active! page.
