Action Alerts

American Civil Liberties Unions (ACLU): Watch the Video and Share Your Message of Support
“When Savana Redding was just 13 years old, she was strip-searched for allegedly possessing prescription-strength ibuprofen. This traumatizing search was based solely on the false and uncorroborated accusation of a classmate who was caught with similar pills. Savana’s case was argued before the Supreme Court by ACLU attorneys seeking to protect the privacy of all students — and make it clear that such conduct has no place in America’s schools. Watch a short video of Savana’s story and share your message of support.”

Amnesty International: Release journalist Roxana Saberi from detention after flawed trial
“Roxana Saberi, a 31-year-old journalist who holds both U.S. and Iranian citizenship, was convicted of espionage and sentenced to eight years in prison following a brief closed-door trial in a Revolutionary Court in Tehran. She had been arrested and detained in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison since January 31, 2009. Legal proceedings in Iran’s Revolutionary Courts are severely flawed and fail to meet international standards for fair trials. The evidence against Ms Saberi has not been made public. Amnesty International is calling for her to be immediately released from detention.”

Animal Law Coalition: Support the PA Anti-Tethering Bill
“Rep.Mario Scavello has introduced an anti-tethering bill, H.B. 1254. The bill has been introduced in previous sessions. This bill would make it a summary offense to tether or chain a dog outside unattended to a stationary object between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. [...] This bill, H.B. 1254, is now in the House Judiciary Committee. Find and contact members here and write or call and urge them to vote YES on H.B. 1254. Go here to find Representatives including your own if you live in Pennsylvania. Write or call and urge them to support this bill.”

Center for Biological Diversity: Take Action to Protect Beluga Whale Habitat
“In 2006, the Center for Biological Diversity — along with Trustees for Alaska, Cook Inletkeeper, and other organizations — petitioned to protect the Cook Inlet beluga under the Endangered Species Act. In October 2008, the National Marine Fisheries Service, the federal agency charged with protecting marine mammals such as the beluga, finally listed the species as endangered. This overdue protection came only after litigation brought by the Center and allies. Unfortunately, rather than designate critical habitat for the beluga at the time of listing, as required by the Endangered Species Act, the Fisheries Service stated that it would defer habitat protection for a year.”

Corporate Accountability International: Tell Coke CEO Muthar Kent to give us the “real thing”
“This Earth Day, Coke is spending millions to spin its image green, leading us to ask, “what is the real thing, really?” Instead of responding to the concerns of tens of thousands who have taken action through Think Outside the Bottle, Coke has launched a green PR blitz. Let Muthar Kent know we see through the PR campaigns and the sponsorships. Send a message to CEO Muthar Kent today and join the thousands that have already taken action.”

DawnWatch: LA Times front page on animal advocate Jennifer Fearing 4/20/09
“The Monday, April 20 Los Angeles Times had a delightful article on its front page headed, “It’s her job to raise a squawk; A hero to chickens after Prop. 2, Jennifer Fearing took an 80% pay cut to become the Humane Society’s Sacramento lobbyist.” The profile piece, by Eric Baily, discusses the unusual career path of Jennifer Fearing, who went from being teenage president of the Amy Grant fan club, to Harvard Graduate, to sensationally paid consultant and then into the animal protection world.”

Farm Sanctuary: USDA Roadmap: Steer Toward Animal Protection
“For too long, agricultural research and education has neglected – if not entirely ignored – the needs of animals. The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) creation of a Roadmap for Agriculture Research, Education and Extension creates an opportunity to change this. Help Farm Sanctuary make the most of this opportunity before it’s too late!”

National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA): Ask Your Representative to Co-Sponsor the Public Lands Service Corps Act now.
“The Public Lands Service Corps Act is an incredible opportunity for our national parks: it would create opportunities for thousands of people to provide millions of hours of much-needed services in our most treasured places, while promoting service learning for citizens young and old. To ensure its success, we need a strong group of co-sponsors to champion this bill through Congress.”

PETA: Urge Pensacola Opera to Cancel Plans to Use Elephants
“After receiving countless complaints from concerned citizens about Pensacola Opera’s plans to feature elephants from exhibitor Doug Terranova in the upcoming productions of Aida, we immediately contacted artistic director Kyle Marrero. We let him know that the elephants he plans to use in the performances, Kamba and Congo, were captured in the wild as babies and forced into a life of loneliness, pain, and isolation, and we told him about the safety risk that performing elephants pose to patrons. After hearing that Kamba and Congo ran amok last year while performing with a circus, damaging property and frightening residents, Pensacola Opera is continuing with plans to use elephants in impending performances.”

PETA: Urge Officials to Ban Fishing at Lake Kussharo to Save Whooper Swans
“Tourists, including two PETA staff members, helped rescue a whooper swan at Lake Kussharo in Japan. [...] Fish aren’t the only victims of “sport” fishing. Water birds like swans and ducks often become entangled in fishing lines, causing them to die slowly from dehydration or starvation, or they can be permanently injured by hooks. According to the Environment Agency in England, 3,000 swans a year require treatment after fishing-tackle injuries. A ban has been imposed in England at the Nottinghamshire Nature Reserve because many swans had been injured or killed by fishing tackle. Please sign the petition below asking Japanese officials to impose a similar ban on fishing at Lake Kussharo.”

Progressive Democrats of America (PDA): A New Day is Dawning; Confirm Dawn Johnsen
“Dawn Johnsen, Obama’s nominee to Office of Legal Counsel is currently a Constitutional law professor at Maurer School of Law at Indiana University. Johnsen is highly qualified for the position; she is a former employee of the Office of Legal Counsel where she served from 1993 – 98 as a Deputy Assistant Attorney General and as Assistant Attorney General. Mother Jones calls her the “anti-Yoo.” Learn more here. Obama’s appointment of Johnsen demonstrates that Obama wants to break from the Bush administration’s abuses of the law, but the Senate is holding up her confirmation. Urge your Senators to confirm Dawn Johnsen’s appointment as head of the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel, below.”

Progressive Democrats of America (PDA): Bye-bye, Bybee; Impeach Jay Bybee
“Former Assistant Attorney General Jay Bybee was the primary author of “legal” memos purporting to justify torture. From 2001 to 2003, Bybee served as Assistant Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel. He is now a federal judge who sits on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. We have learned, through a report by the International Committee of the Red Cross and, from last Thursday’s newly released Department of Justice memos, of the brutal torture techniques employed in our name over the last several years. Bybee’s signature is on the August 1, 2002, memo that justified and authorized acts of torture by the CIA. Clearly this man should not maintain his lifetime appointment to the Federal bench and should be impeached!”

Rainforest Action Network (RAN): Now that you own Citibank, Contact Shareholder Relations!
“Congratulations, you own a gigantic multi-national bank! 36% of Citigroup–one of the leading financers of dirty coal–is now owned by the American public. Now that you’re an owner you can write to the bank’s Shareholder Relations department and tell them to stop funding the expansion of coal.”

The Sierra Club: Cut global warming pollution and stimulate auto sales
“Last month, President Obama asked Congress to deliver a “cash for clunkers” bill that gives consumers who turn in an old, inefficient vehicle a cash voucher to help buy a more efficient vehicle. The Accelerated Retirement of Inefficient Vehicles Act (ARIVA) does just that, and even goes further to offer consumers a choice to get a voucher for transit. ARIVA will stimulate auto sales, reduce our dependence on oil and lower greenhouse gas emissions.”

United Farm Workers (UFW): Join farm workers in lobbying for basic rights on the anniversary of Cesar’s passing.
“More than one hundred farm workers will be in Sacramento this Thursday, April 23–on the 16th anniversary of Cesar Chavez’ passing–to lobby to protect themselves from grower abuses. [...] SB789 will be on the senate floor Thursday afternoon and farm workers will be lobbying in Sacramento to encourage senators to pass this vital bill. California is currently experiencing a heat wave. Please take action to help the men and women who are in the fields under the sweltering sun working to put food on our tables.”

In Defense of Animals (IDA): World Week for Animals in Laboratories (WWAIL) – Saturday, April 18 through Sunday, April 26
“Please join In Defense of Animals during World Week for Animals in Laboratories (WWAIL), April 18-26, to speak out against the abhorrent use of animals in testing and research. With a new administration and a serious financial crisis at hand, it is more important than ever that we use this week to call attention to the outdated and unnecessary biomedical experiments that continue to claim the lives of millions of animals each year. This year, there is more hope than ever, as technology moves us beyond antiquated animal experiments and government reports, agencies and scientists have begun to acknowledge not only the need to move away from animal research, but also the flaws in the National Institutes of Health’s grant-funding system.”

Earth Day – Wednesday, April 22, 2009
“Earth Day 2009, April 22, will mark the beginning of the Green Generation Campaign! This two-year initiative will culminate with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day in 2010. With negotiations for a new global climate agreement coming up in December, Earth Day 2009 must be a day of action and civic participation, to defend the Green Generation’s core principles. Under the umbrella of the Green Generation, thousands of events are currently being planned in schools, communities, villages, towns and cities around the world. As in 2008, on April 19th Earth Day Network will celebrate Earth Day on the National Mall in Washington, DC, plus large-scale volunteer events in ten other US cities in partnership with Green Apple Festival. Our partners in Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Beijing, and Manila, among others, are planning large events where everyone can participate. Find an event or activity near you!”

About

The easyVegan Link Sanctuary is a near-daily roundup of animal and environmental advocacy action alerts, campaign updates, carnivals, contests, newsletters, petitions, upcoming events and miscellaneous resources.

While my primary focus is non-human animals and the environment in which they live, I will cover human rights issues as well, especially as they relate to animal and environmental welfare. (For example, while reproductive rights is typically seen as a feminist or women’s issue, the growing global human population does have environmental consequences. In this vein, access to family planning resources has a tangible impact on the environment – an environment we share with non-human animals.)

This link roundup is meant as a jumping-off point for you, the reader, to take further action and learn more about the issues presented here. I link, you decide!

If you have a link you’d like included, please drop me a line at easyvegan [at] gmail.com – or leave it in the comments! Feedback is also appreciated, particularly as it relates to the links included above. I’ve tried my best to identify and name any speciesism, sexism, racism, classism, homophobia, sizeism, etc. which may appear in the resources above; if, however, I’ve overlooked something, please leave a note in the comments. It’s not my desire to fight one form of oppression by engaging in another.

If you’d like to get on the above organizations’ e-mail lists, I’ve compiled a full list of all my resources on the Get Active! page.

You can also follow me on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, delicious, Flickr, Amazon and LibraryThing.
