I think we are all in for a reality shock. If we are really serious about ending animal exploitation then when our dog that sleeps peacefully by the fire, the cat who is cuddled up snuggly in the sewing basket and the horse that maybe in our stable passes on we will not be replacing them unless a rescue is necessary. Perhaps we might then find the will to help stop human expansion into greenbelt land, restore habitats and labor to reintroduce extirpated species back to a good portion of the land that they once had. Going vegan is also about finding our place in the world and discovering that as enilghtened beings we have a moral and ethical duty to ahere to a code of conduct toward other species that leads to their freedom and success.

@ peace - I think you're onto something; animal transport trucks aren't that hard to spot - assuming you know what you're looking for (and are, in fact, looking). Problem is, no one wants to see. Don't ask, don't tell.

Really, animals aren't taken to slaughter in unmarked vans. Slaughterhouse trucks are actually quite obvious--both by look and smell--and the "air" holes in the sides afford drivers a look at who's in there. I think any adult understands that a truck full of cows, chickens, or pigs isn't going to a fun day out to the movies.

They just see the animals and feel nothing.

Excellent, brilliant work.
In regards to writing as:
"unintimidating or inoffensive – for “meat” eaters."
"the need for…multitasking?"
I have to agree with this stance to some extent. For example if I persuade a friend to read something like this page, I'd feel that I'd have to edit certain parts of it to appear slightly less (umm crazy, leftist vegan?) bias in order for my friend to not (possibly subconsciously) snarl at the thought of the (umm crazy, leftist vegan?) viewpoint before he gets a chance to actually absorb any real information and emotion.
Does that make sense?
This material is capable of changing lives, and eventually the food industry, so my view is that it should be written as factual and accessible as possible when relayed to the general public.

I whole-heartedly agree with what you've said and thank you for your insightful words.
Peace,
Tim.

Thanks for the great review. I hadn't heard of this book, but now I'm planning on seeking it out at the library to take a look at. Most animal rights/food-related books I've read thus far focus on the horrors of factory farming and how people should be ashamed of themselves for supporting it. I like how this book seems to focus on the mechanisms for how omnis deal with meat eating and how they process their dietary actions in their head.

This post is just one more example of why I love this blog so much - well-written, thoughtful, and in-depth. Keep up the great work!
