Product Review: Bold Organics Vegan Cheese Pizza

While Shane was away at TAM last week, I took the opportunity to empty our freezers of all that vegan pizza we picked up the last time we traveled south of the city. While there are a few natural foods stores in north Kansas City, their vegan options are usually lackluster, bordering on shameful.

(Price Chopper, I’m looking at you! There’s no way you can justify wasting an entire shelf in the frozen section on frozen bananas [FROZEN BANANAS! CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT SHIT?] when you don’t carry a single quart of vegan ice cream. No way! But I digress.)

On the menu: Bold Organics Vegan Cheese Pizza, American Flatbread Vegan Harvest, and not one but two (TWO!) varieties of the new Daiya pizzas. Sadly, I am still searching for the Amy’s brand Daiya cheese pizza. Frowny face.

First up: Bold Organics. Since I planned on reviewing these from the outset – for fuck yeah vegan pizza, if nothing else – I’d promised myself that I wouldn’t add any extra toppings. Of course, that lasted all of five seconds: as soon as I saw the pizza, in its nearly naked state, on went the extras.

For pizza numbero uno, cheddar Daiya cheese, grape tomatoes, and Kalamata olives:

The first time around, the crust didn’t crisp up as much as I’d anticipated. In fact, it was pretty floppy, like a good NYC thin slice. And totally not up to the task of supporting all the extra toppings: I needed a fork to eat up the stray pieces. (Blasphemy!) Tasty but very, very messy.

So for the second pizza, I opted for a little extra mozzarella Daiya and a few handfuls of french fries. The cooking times on the pizza and fries are roughly the same, so it worked out well.

Interestingly, this second crust was much crispier and more rigid than the first. I can’t think of a difference between the two save for the toppings – perhaps all the extra (moist!) toppings on pizza #1 made it thick enough that it didn’t fully cook through in the middle?

Anyway, here’s the breakdown:

Bold Organics Vegan Cheese Pizza

Size: 4/5. As with most frozen pizzas, the pie’s diameter is a little smaller than the width of the box (boo!). Supposedly a serving size is 1/3 of the pizza, but of course I ate all of it in one sitting. Even enjoyed without a side, it’s a decent-sized meal.

Crust: 3/5. Though I didn’t pay much attention at the time of purchase, Bold Organics’s crusts are gluten free. I don’t have much experience with GF baking, but it’s my understanding that gluten free crusts have a reputation (whether deserved or not) for being dry and not a little crumbly. Not so! While far from the tastiest crust I’ve tried (that honor goes to American Flatbread because FLATBREAD!), Bold Organics’s crusts are serviceable enough. Results may vary by cook time and extra toppings added: while the first (cheddar Daiya, tomato, and Kalamata olive) pizza was a bit limp, a la New York City thin crusts, the second had a crispier crust.

Sauce: 3/5. Sauce on frozen pizzas is always a bit sparser than I would like. I’m a saucy kind of gal, yo. However, between the FYH cheese that came with the pizza and the Daiya I added, the pizza baked up moist enough for me. You can definitely taste the sauce, too: with a hint of red chili and black pepper, it’s noticeably spicy. Just how much of a kick it packs depends on your tolerance for spicy foods; mine is nearly zero, and the sauce was almost too spicy for me. Almost but not quite! Still, I generally prefer a more understated sauce.

Cheese: 4/5. A little skimpy, but tasty! Bold Organics uses Vegan Gourmet’s Follow Your Heart cheese on its vegan pizzas (of which there are two varieties: cheese and veggie lovers) – and I’m proud to say that I recognized it immediately, even before checking out the ingredients list. The appearance, the texture, the spotty meltability: it’s all there. In fact, the instructions on the packaging even include this handy tip: “Broil for 2 minutes [after baking] if cheese is not melted and bubbly.” – finicky and unpredictable, that’s Follow Your Heart! I kid, I kid; I actually love the mozzarella even more than Daiya cheese. It’s doesn’t always melt on cue, but when it does, holy pools of liquid cheesy goodness!

For what it’s worth, I didn’t have a problem getting the cheese to melt, even after adding all those extra toppings. You can kind of see the melted mozzarella in the pictures above; it stands out especially well next to Daiya’s orange cheddar.

Toppings: n/a. The Vegan Cheese doesn’t have any other toppings, but the Veggie’s Lovers has roasted red peppers, mushrooms, and onions.

Overall Rating: 3/5. It’s tasty enough, but pales next to some of its competitors (e.g., Tofurky, American Flatbread, Amy’s). But it’s always nice to have gluten free options!

(I didn’t bother rating it on price and nutrition, because these pizzas are always pricier and less healthy than we’d like!)

    I like the Bold Pizza the best. I’ve had Tofurky and Daiya pizzas and they were doughy and had too much fake cheese. With the fake cheese, less is more in my opinion.
