Product Review: Kyjen 2451 Cagey Cube Dog Toy

A great puzzle toy for dogs who don’t like puzzle toys!

five out of five stars

I’m always on the lookout for toys that exercise my dogs’ brains as well as their bodies. Unfortunately, of my five rescue dogs, Peedee is the only one who really enjoys the more difficult puzzle toys. Rennie? Well, she just wants you to throw her tennis ball, okay. Some balls she becomes downright obsessed with, carrying them around until they’re little more than scraps of rubber and felt.

So you can imagine my excitement when I discovered this Cagey Cube dog toy by Kyjen. What better way to trick her into solving a puzzle than by using her own favorite toy against her?

The Cagey Cube is made of a flexible rubber material. Each of the six sides has a number of holes, but only one (an equilateral triangle whose sides measure 3 ¼ inches) is large enough to accommodate a tennis ball. Naturally, more literal-minded dogs might just chew their way through the bars of the cube to get at the ball; if this sounds like your guy or girl, supervised play is a must. Luckily, I haven’t run into that problem. Yet.

The Cagey Cube comes with a tennis ball, but it’s a standard size and easily replaced when damaged. I immediately swapped it out for Rennie’s current favorite, so she’d be extra-motivated to conquer the puzzle. Though it took her a few tries, she did eventually liberate her ball from its annoying red cage. This was a bit of a wild card purchase, but Rennie really loves her Cagey Cube – and I love watching her play with it.

Fun story: this was one of many gifts I wrapped for the dogs this past Christmas. After I stacked their presents under the tree on Christmas morning and let them in the room, Rennie made a beeline for this particular toy, even though it was at the bottom of the pile. I think she could smell the tennis ball from the other end of the house!

4.5 stars, rounded up to 5 on Amazon. It’d be nice if the rubber was made of slightly tougher stuff. Determined chewers can tear through the cage in minutes.
