So my birthday was two weeks ago, and even though I’m well into my 30s now, my mom still insists on buying me gifts. I’d just as soon she make a donation to an animal rescue group in my name, but she never does, so I’ve long since stopped suggesting it. Instead, I send her a wishlist populated with books, usually comic books. I think my lack of interest in adult items, like china and nice sweaters, frustrates her just a smidge, but she’s learned to deal. She humors me, anyway.

This year she got me volumes 1-5 of Brian Azzarello’s Wonder Woman run (I already have #1 and #6 has yet to be released in paperback), along with Volumes 1 and 2 of Ms. Marvel. My sister got me a swanky X-Files hoodie, and my mom and dad also gifted me a no soliciting/vegan cookies welcome sign from etsy.

Also in the world of comic books, the 2015 preorder I won from @MissMolliWrites arrived in April: Season 10, Volume 2 of Buffy.

2015-04-25 - Cookin' Up a Storm - 0001 [flickr]

I got a copy of Laura Dakin’s Cookin’ Up a Storm: Sea Stories and Vegan Recipes from Sea Shepherd’s Anti-Whaling Campaigns for review through Goodreads. Already made and devoured two dishes from it!

2015-04-27 - The Orphan Queen - 0001 [flickr]

I won a finished copy of Jodi Meadows’s The Orphan Queen from Gail at Ticket to Anywhere. Squee!

2015-04-28 - Pirate Hunters - 0001 [flickr]

And many thanks to Random House for sending me Pirate Hunters: Treasure, Obsession, and the Search for a Legendary Pirate Ship by Robert Kurson, for pleasure and for upcoming FSMas displays.

When the first copy was lost in the mail, Kristen at My Friends Are Fiction and her contact at Bloomsbury were awesome about sending me another copy of Samantha Shannon’s The Mime Order.

Also filed under giveaway spoils: an autographed copy of Ignite by Sarah Larson, from Free Book Friday and Scholastic.

2015-05-01 - A Letter to My Mom - 0002 [flickr]

A copy of A Letter to My Mom, via Blogging for Books, which I’ve already reviewed.

2015-05-02 - SFF Fridays Book Mail - 0001 [flickr]

Book mail from @OnStarshipsBlog, where every Friday is SF/F Friday! I scored copies of Strands of Bronze and Gold and Skin Hunger from Anya’s ARC pile. Thanks, Anya!

2015-05-06 - From Read It Forward - 0001 [flickr]

Another win: an ARC of Chris Beckett’s Mother of Eden, the sequel to Dark Eden, which is currently on sale for $1.99 on Amazon. Yeah, I bought it.

2015-05-15 - Books from Sandra Waugh - 0002 [flickr]

Last but not least, the most beautifully presented book mail ever, from Sandra Waugh. Top to bottom: Lark Rising (Guardians of Tarnec #1) by Sandra Waugh; Monstrous by MarcyKate Connolly; and When Reason Breaks by Cindy L. Rodriguez.

Seriously, the bundle is so pretty I can’t bring myself to unwrap it! Which is cool, because right now my bookshelves are packed so tight the only space I have for it is sitting horizontally atop a row of hardbacks.

New to review from NetGalley:

  • The Gracekeepers by Kirsty Logan
  • The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins
  • Alien Child by Pamela Sargent
  • Rat Queens Volume 2 by Kurtis J. Wiebe
  • The Girl from the Well by Rin Chupeco

And I also joined Edelweiss last week! Naturally I went on a requesting spree, but here’s what I’ve been approved for so far:

  • The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell
  • The Geeky Chef Cookbook by Cassandra Reeder
  • More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera
  • Weird Girl and What’s His Name by Megan Brothers
