The Rat Terrier Review: Memorial Day Edition!

I’m not sure one post makes it official, but I am making this a thing, people!

On Saturday, the dogs helped me plant marigolds.

Well, Rennie and Peedee helped; Mags had a fit from behind the bars of her crate, and Finnick tried his best to avoid the camera.

I brought out a bed for Peedee, to keep him comfy and entice him to stay outdoors (he’s a little more of a couch potato in his old age). He threw Finnick some major shade for coming too close, but eventually gave it up to Rennie.

Afterwards, I dressed Peedee up in peonies and did an impromptu photo shoot. I bribed him with treats, but I think he would’ve went along with it regardless.

I also took a few shots of him wearing just his collar, since he so rarely does.

Back inside, it was barking for MORE TREATS.

And then chilling on the couch with a little iZombie.

On Sunday, we started the day with a walk: Peedee and Rennie, on our street, for the first time since we moved in ~7 years ago. Between the gravel, the traffic (better since the quarry scaled back operations), and the loose cats, dogs, and peacock (!), the nearby park always seemed the better option. But Peedee was way calmer and less anxious once we took the car ride out of the equation, just as I’d hoped. Yay!

The street’s longer than I thought – about a mile – and we’re just about in the center of it. It’s a horseshoe that lets out on a highway on either end, so back and forth are our only options. Anyway, the length ends up being just perfect – a half a mile one way + another half back = about what the dogs can manage right now. Now I’m crossing my fingers that he doesn’t grow bored with the area too quickly.

They even spotted a tortoise by the fence line. Let’s just say they were happier to see him than the other way around. Claws like whoah! Don’t worry, we kept them at a safe distance.

On the downside, I accidentally picked up some litter that had been sitting next to a patch of poison ivy, so I had to walk around with a poop bag on my hand most of the time.

After our mid-morning nap (in the sunroom, which is THE BEST place to be this time of year; in the winter, not so much),

we made clay pawprints. Just Peedee and Rennie, though; I decided at the last minute that I wanted the colors to match their harnesses (and the shapes, their personalities) and I only had red (Rennie) and black (Peedee). The pig = Rennie, for obvious reasons; and Peedee is the star, because he’s a super-awesome super-star.

Pink, blue, and green clay are on order, as is a nifty Firefly cookie cutter for Jayne.

At night, we watched a movie (Wish I Was Here; not my best pick – it’s less about an actor homeschooling his children than an actor whose father is dying. OF CANCER.) and gave roughly 20% of my salt and vinegar popcorn to the dogs. Minus Mags, who thinks that salt and vinegar is THE WORST. I swear, sometimes it’s like I don’t even know her.

On Memorial Day, we took Peedee and Rennie walking in the morning – and we nearly ran into a tortoise on the road. Not sure if he was the same guy, but they were both equally ornery. I didn’t want to leave him there in the middle of the street, but he refused to budge until we left. Luckily, there wasn’t any traffic to speak of, and he was long gone on our way back. (We could trace his path through the grass.)

Then I took Jayne and Finnick to the park, which was super-swampy due to all the recent rain.

Don’t worry, I rocked my rubber boots.

After that, Jayne was running a little hot, so I took her down to the pond (which is up like a gazillion feet because of all the rain!) to cool off.

And then, another nap in the sunroom, some play time,

shaming Mags with her cone, her leash (which I’m pretty sure she managed to pee on), and her general infirmity,

and finally a little sunbathing before dinner.

Our movie was Young Adult, which proved to be a way better pick than the previous night’s fare. Though I’m not quite sure I how I feel about the ending.

Today was a little more low-key, on account of I had a dentist appointment (Invisalign, round three: so far, so good) and Shane took Mags to the surgeon for a follow-up and to have her stitches removed. He spoke to one of the technicians who assisted with the surgery, and was unsurprised to hear that Mags kept trying to bite her. I guess it caught her off guard because she didn’t expect a little old lady to act in a manner so unbecoming.

Happily, Mags was cleared for regular activity: no more crate rest or leashed walks for her! When she got home, and I let her out onto the patio – BY HERSELF! – she was figgin’ ecstatic. I don’t think I’ve seen her that happy since last April, when Shane and I left the house and came back without foster pony.

A box o’ toys arrived for Peedee this morning – four more of those talking animals from Multipet that he loves – so we opened them after I got home. His absolute favorite is the chimpanzee, so I ordered him a second just to watch his head essplode.

After dinner, we took Peedee and Rennie walking again. No tortoise this time, but we did spot two cats: a manx who moved like a rabbit, and a smug-looking gray cat who could pass as Lemmy’s twin.

Aaaand that brings us to tonight. As I type this, Peedee is snoozing next to me on the couch, his head pillowed on my leg. I wish I could bottle this moment up and make it last forever – or a few more years, anyway – but I guess this will have to do.
