The Rat Terrier Review: Top o’ the Muffin to Ya!

This week was pretty low-key, mostly on account of the sweltering heat. Thus we spent quite a bit of time sprawled out on the bed, under fans, and (in the dogs’ case) on the nice, cool concrete floors.

Wednesday night we saw Avengers: Age of Ultron (MEH. Especially on the woman front.) and Tomorrowland (not bad) at the drive-in; it was so hot that the dogs nearly polished off the bowl of water we brought. They even sat still when I started splashing water from my canteen on them (desperate times, y’all). Peedee was pretty good, though not quite as amazaballs as last time; he barked twice, once at other moviegoers who walked right in front of HIS WINDOW (which was cracked pretty wide, in his defense), and again at the racket from the truck yard next door. Anyway, a good time was had by all, and we weren’t any hotter than we would have been at home, so.

We really should have turned on the AC Thursday, but I thought wunderground was exaggerating when it predicted temps topping 100; its estimates have been way inflated so far this season (their local sensor must be broken; someone get on that!). But it really did get to be 100! Close, anyway: 98 or so.

Mags and Rennie got a ton of swimming in, and Peedee even let me take him for a dunk one morning. He doesn’t swim – if he feels like the water’s in danger of topping his head, he starts thrashing hysterically and claws his way onto my shoulders, Scooby Doo styley – but he likes to sit on my lap. Or at least I think he does. He kind of just sits there and looks mildly annoyed, but I’ll take the absence of a freak out as an encouraging sign, okay.

I froze some fruit – bananas and strawberries; the strawberries proved much more popular, as evidenced by the brown chunks of banana I found scattered about the house throughout the week – and handed out slices all week to help them cool down.

I also made some dog treats: Gingerbread Muffins from Molly’s old cookbook, Emma’s K9 Kitchen. They were a huge hit, but super-messy. Crumbs like whoah. Rennie and Finnick even got to scrapping over them one night in bed. (Note to self: DO NOT HAND OUT DOG TREATS IN BED.)

And Thursday night the dogs and I slept in the sunroom for a change. It’s nice and cool and ridiculously calming, what with the cricket-song and frog mating calls, but the old mattress really does a number on my back. (UGH I AM SO OLD AND DECREPIT YOU GUYS!) Between the fan and the cross-breeze I actually woke up shivering.

We spent more than one afternoon relaxing in the sunroom, playing with toys: balls for Rennie, talking animals for Peedee.

There was also a little dress-up, but nothing too involved; mostly just flowers (or possibly weeds), scrunchies, and neckties. (I’m not about to make them wear knitted caps or butterfly wings in the heat, okay. Despite what they may tell you, I’M NOT A MONSTER.)

Thankfully it cooled off yesterday, enough to go walking. Shane and I took Peedee, Rennie, and Mags to Smithville Lake. The constant rain caused some pretty obvious flooding; while the water has obviously receded – leaving garbage and dead fishes in its wake – the water line is still way above what it should be/normally is. The bright side of this is that it was much easier to find an access point to the lake for Rennie to cool her hot piggy belly off. We even met a tortoise and a mole (which Rennie tried to eat, natch, but luckily her lack of teeth meant that he came out unscathed).

Finally, here are two adorabs pics of Finnick that I couldn’t figure out how to fit in otherwise.

Sadly, Jayne was mostly MIA all week. I think I took three pictures of her total. Like a ghost. Or a ninja. GHOST NINJA.
