The Rat Terrier Review: Fourth of July edition!

I can’t believe we’re five days into July already! The summer is just flying by. Luckily, we’ve managed to cram plenty of fun/new/memory-making things into it, heat and rain be damned.

Of course, we got plenty of walks in this week. Sunday morning we even explored a new trail: the Trice-Dedman Memorial Woods, which is so hidden and out-of-the-way that it doesn’t even have a parking lot, just a shoulder alongside the highway to park on.

Your sign says “welcome,” but your chained gate says “GTFO.”
——————————

Needless to say, we had the place all to ourselves. That’s the good part. The bad? Well, the trail’s very narrow and I was on high alert for poison ivy the whole time. That kind of sucked most of the joy out of it notiz herunterladen. Also, Shane managed to get us lost – after I was already headed the right way back to the car. Yeah.

Peedee was super-anxious the whole time, but Rennie and (especially, weirdly) Mags had a rad time. I think she likes the feel of soft, squishy earth on her tiny little feet.

We also took another spin around town, including the local high school and middle school; the dogs kinda-sorta posed on the bleachers and in the outdoor caf with me.

(It’s a feat to get one terrier to sit still, let alone three at once.)

Peedee kept trying to bust his way into the building,

2015-06-29 - Walking Round the HS - 0013 [flickr]

which is funny because he most certainly DID NOT LIKE his first stint in (obedience) school.

Then we revisited the Smoke & Davey Trails around Smithville Lake; we took Peedee there once or twice before, but he wasn’t a fan of all the screeching birds. Now that the foliage has filled in, it’s a little quieter and not as desolate feeling. He was still a little hyper, but not nearly as bad as before uplay download for free. I suppose it also doesn’t hurt that the place was practically deserted – it was drizzling off and on, so we had the trails almost entirely to ourselves.

One section of the trail was completely washed out, which was as eerie as it was convenient for a quick dip. Just walk right down into the water!

Last but mos def not least, we took Peedee, Rennie, and Jayne to Smithville Lake proper.

En route: Jayne (top); Rennie is the ultimate backseat driver.

The shoreline has receded a bit from the week before, but it’s still high enough that they can easily walk right down to the water from the trails microsoft word 2016 gratis downloaden.

There was a giant flock of geese migrating around the park; when we approached, they swam over to a farther shore, but took their sweet time doing it. Rennie and Peedee were mildly interested, but not enough to brave the waves, which were surprisingly strong (maybe on account of all the motorboats?). Not that it matters; I don’t think either dog has even seen a wave before. Another first!

We went to the drive-in again this week, and everyone had a blast. We’ve been getting there earlier and earlier, so the dogs have plenty of time to walk around and explore. It was at least ten degrees cooler this time around, which was a welcome change of pace. I broke out an ice pack for Peedee, but mostly just because it was there. I got the feeling he could take it or leave it.

On the screen this week: Dope (dope!) and Insidious 3 (yawn!) notepad++ kostenlos downloaden.

Mags and Rennie got tons of pool time in, much to their dismay.

idk what was worse for them: being made to swim against their will, or the documentation of such.

Usually we spend a little time sunbathing post-swim, to dry off – especially important if the AC is on, since they’d freeze their tiny tushes off otherwise. Mags goes all maternal on Rennie, trying to lick her dry; Rennie will often reciprocate, albeit less enthusiastically.

It’s either creepy or adorable, depending on your perspective. To wit: this picture, where it looks as though Mags is trying to nom on Rennie’s face.

And here’s a cute one, just for good measure.

Peedee knocked his treat balls around a bit, though I brought them outside to mix things up a little wieso kann ich keine apps herunterladen. He wasn’t a huge fan, seeing as the grass made it harder to find all those errant treats. That was kind of the point, but hey. I still caved and relocated the balls to the blanket for minimum effort. OF COURSE I did.

As it sometimes does, the silly fun time came to blows when two or more dogs showed an interest in the same shiny things.

Yup, he and Rennie scrapped a little. Ditto: Peedee and Finnick. PEEDEE DOESN’T SHARE FOOD!

Speaking of treats, we started running low on the frozen strawberries and bananas, so I made them some ice cream bites.

2015-06-29 - Maple Bacon Banana Bites - 0004 [flickr]

I did this once before, many years back, using the banana bread banana ice cream recipe youtube songsen auf iphone. This was a smokey bacon maple version, with Liquid Smoke, maple syrup, and bacon bits. Not as weird as it sounds! Not that their judgement counts for much, but the dogs loved it.

I gave the dogs a few rounds this morning, and somehow Rennie managed to get a bacon bit stuck in her eye. Man I hope it came out in the picture. Fingers crossed.

I even froze the extra batter for human consumption. I’ll post the recipe later this week maybe.

(Pro tip: a melon baller works wonders for scooping the balls. Just be sure to freeze them quick and serve while still ice cold; they melt really quickly. And maybe don’t serve them on furniture or clean linen? Learn from my mistakes.)

In other news, Mags’s butt fur is slowly growing back,

2015-06-28 - Outside with the Dogs - 0049 [flickr]

giving her tail a wonderfully weird fuzzy-wuzzy look. I kind of wish I could stay this way furever.

Assless chaps ftw!

What else? I snuck a few pics of Jayne and Finnick.

Rennie found a new partner for her morning picnic table sunbathing: Finnick! I’m sure Mags would love to join her, but that’s way too high up for her. She’d break her good hip on the way down.

And Lemmy had a run-in with a strange cat who suddenly appeared at our front door. I just so happened to be walking through the house with a camera in hand – pestering the dogs, no doubt – so I got a pic, but not a very good one. It was my outdoor camera, mkay.

2015-06-28 - Lemmy Spots an Intruder - 0002 [flickr]

Anyway, Lemmy was making a hideous noise, like someone was punching him in the kidneys; that’s what first drew my attention. He carried on for maybe thirty second and then just launched himself five feet into the air, right into the glass door. I didn’t think he had those kind of ups left in him! Not after four+ years of cushy living.

The other cat was stunned into paralysis right until the point of impact, then he tore ass out of there. Lemmy spent the remainder of the day perched in the windows facing the front yard, just DARING strange cat to show his face again. He didn’t even stop when they dogs tried to run him off for acting like a creeper.

This brings us to yesterday. (In a meandering sort of way, but still.) July 4th is never a fun day ’round here, and yesterday was no exception. The neighbors on both sides of us – and across the street, and down the street, and the next street over – were essploding fireworks throughout the day (and had been intermittently all week, and probably will continue to do so for the next week+.). The orgy of noise and concussions culminated in the town’s fireworks show, which is held every year in the park on the outskirts of town. The one a street over from us. It’s so close that part of our property practically brushes its borders.

Thus, the fireworks display? Looks like it’s in our backyard. Quite possibly ours is the best viewing place in town, what with the lights reflecting off the pond and all. Which would be great, if we didn’t have five dogs who are worked into various levels of terror by the virtual aerial assault. (Rennie and Mags are on the “meh” end, with Peedee and Jayne running around the house in code red mode, trying to find a dark, quite place in which to hide for the rest of eternity.)

Yesterday was gorgeous – warm (but not too warm) and sunny – and I’d really wanted to spend it outside, sunbathing with Rennie and Mags. But Peedee started losing his shit rather early in the day, so instead I created a little cave under my desk, distracted him with a stuffed Kong, and sorted, edited, and uploaded the week’s photos for most of the day. (SO MANY PHOTOS.)

He was so busy guarding his treats from Finnick and Rennie that he temporarily forgot that he was supposed to be cowering in fear.

We had an early dinner so we wouldn’t be occupied when the real explosions started, but Peedee was surprisingly good for the main show. He just snuggled up under my desk and chilled while I got some work done. Shane threw a crate in the closet for Jayne, but she napped on the bed – which is unprecedented for her. Possibly she is going a little deaf, as Shane suspects. Any other year she’d be hiding under the bed, not splayed out on it.

Until next week.
