This little guy has been hanging out on our patio come nightfall, looking for nomy insects to crunch on. Luckily, his presence only arouses mild curiosity in the dogs, much like a strange-smelling towel found in the park. (Yes, I have done that. With t-shirts too. And balls. And kids’ toys. Even a notebook shaped like a purse once. Collect ALL THE THINGS, basically.)

Sunday was the second day in a week-long heat wave, so we spent the day indoors, sprawled out under fans and next to heating (well, AC) vents java downloaden macbook. I let Mags, Peedee, and Rennie work on some stuffed Kongs – IN BED (gasp!) – since the blankets were already yucked up with their gross chicken-smelling toothpaste. (I try to buy plain or vanilla, but Pet Boulevard’s listings aren’t always clear.) Rennie really put her thighs into it.

Monday was their monthly flea and tick application, so they all ran around the house with comically spiked head/neck/shoulder fur.

Just to give y’all an idea of how oppressively hot it’s been lately – this is what happened when I tried to photograph my dinner out on the patio. Lens steamed up like whoah.

A post-dinner pee circle featuring Rennie, Mags, and Finnick.

2015-07-15 - Cheesy Peedee - 0003 [flickr]

For dinner I treated myself to a heaping plate o’ cheesy fries, and afterwards I let Peedee lick the dishes clean (naturally) games pc for free. Here he is with a big gob of cheddar Daiya stuck to his nose (and cheese-eating grin on his face).

Then the kiddos got their evening meal, which ended in the traditional game of musical dishes. Here’s Peedee, looking all aggrieved at Finnick’s chutzpah for licking a dish that’s not his. And by “his” I mean not Finnick’s, but also not Peedee’s. Though if you ask Peedee, he will say that “ALL THE DISHES CAN BELONG TO ME!!!”

After dinner, Peedee was still feeling a little peckish, so he decided to snack on some nice, moist soil mubi movies. Yum! Actually, the neighbors tell us that our home’s old owners used to bury deer bones for their own dogs to find in the back yard – a thought both sweet and horrifying – so perhaps that explains their fixation on the north end of the yard.

Finnick, wondering how on earth he managed to get cornered by a camera-wielding maniac. (That’s me! I’m the maniac!)

A rare Jayne sighting.

2015-07-15 - Making Carob Cranberry Treats - 0002 [flickr]

For dessert I made of batch of treats for the dogs. This is a variation on the Carob Mint Muffins from Emma’s K9 Kitchen. I made the biscuits, but kept the amount of water the same, eliminated the mint extract, and added a few handfuls of dried cranberries. I also under-baked them a tiny bit, so that they’d be a little softer for the older dogs. Of course this means they won’t keep as long, so I froze half and refrigerated the rest.

2015-07-16 - Going to the Drive-In - 0016 [flickr]

The dogs’ first clue that OMG IT’S HAPPENING WE’RE GOING TO THE DRIVE-IN!!!!? Is when I whip out the popcorn machine immediately after finishing dinner. Then Peedee, Rennie, and Mags go absolutely ballistic, to the point that Shane has to play bouncer at the garage door so I can properly outfit the van without a ton of interference.

This is Peedee’s “GET MOVING LADY!” face.

We’re lucky enough to live near(-ish) two drive-ins with six screens between them. Usually we go to the I-70, but this time around we visited the Twin: Peedee’s first time there! He was pretty chill, even though he knew about halfway through the trip that we were headed in a slightly different direction than usual.

We opted for the kids’ combo (the things I do for you, Peedee!): Minions (super fucking weird) and Inside Out (super fucking adorable). We almost skipped the drive-in this week on account of the heat, but next week looks like it’ll be brutal too, so I didn’t really see the point. We loaded up with ice packs and water, and it all worked out okay. Still not as bad as that time we saw Jurassic World and Pitch Perfect 2.

And I have an audience! Notice how Peedee’s careful not to wander *too close* to Finnick, as if he has cat cooties or something.

It was hot and rainy, but the weather broke just long enough for us to take Peedee, Rennie, and Mags (forevermore known as the Terrible Trio) on a short walking the cemetery. Bonus points: there were plenty of puddles to splash in!

While Mags and Rennie were off swimming with Shane, Peedee was treated to some Kongs stuffed with biscuits (haha, suckers!). We have at least four of these stuff-a-Kong type toys, but I swear this is the first time we’ve ever used them as intended. Usually they just create too much conflict. Anyway, no surprise, Peedee loved it. Must do it again!
